Brothers Karamazov | Fyodor Dostoyevsky
post image

Ok #hashtagbrigade we have December off and then we start #thebros in January, chapter a day. Forever. It‘s a #chunkster for sure but we‘ve got this! If you would like to be tagged for #thebros let me know below. If you‘re not on the master tag list and would like to be, let me know below! I‘ll use the master tag list at the beginning of every book so you can ask to be added to the book list. Sound good? #pemberlittens ⬇️

BarkingMadRead Just remember my hashtags are often ridiculous and always spoilers for that chapter, so don‘t read them until you‘ve read the chapter! 13mo

BarkingMadRead @jenniferw88 👍🏻👍🏻 13mo

Deblovestoread What a fun read made more so by your lovely #hashtags. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 13mo
dabbe There are so many books read with this group this year that A. I had never heard of; B. I had never read; C. I never could have gotten through without this lovely group. And @BarkingMadRead, you are da bomb! You should create a study guide summary sight with just your hashtags; your summaries are way funnier than Shmoop's. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate. I'm thankful to be part of this fantastic group. 🧡🖤💜 13mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! I definitely read way more books because of the #hashtagbrigade 13mo
eeclayton Thanks for hosting @BarkingMadRead I enjoyed it a lot, even though nothing much happened 😁 13mo
rwmg Thank you for hosting and allowing me to join in. Looking forward to your next read (unless it's Thomas Hardy who I have loathed ever since we had to read The Mayor of Casterbridge at school 50 years ago). 13mo
BarkingMadRead @rwmg no Hardy, our next read is Brother‘s Karamazov in January, it‘s going to take forever 🤣 13mo
Bklover Thank you yet again, @BarkingMadRead ! I know for sure that the books we have read this year I wouldn‘t have gotten through alone, nor enjoyed as much. Your hashtags have enriched my reading life!! ❤️❤️❤️ See you in January for the Bros! 13mo

Bookwormjillk It must be exhausting being some of these people the way they spend all day judging 1y
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk seriously though! 1y
See All 25 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I snickered over the description of Charlotte purposefully going out in the bad weather, but staying in during the nice weather - I have definitely met people like that, who do things the absolute hardest, worst way so they can spend all their time complaining about their difficulties! 1y
mcctrish #toomuchbeetoven so Lucy is going for a walk instead of the circular tram cuz it‘s safer 🙄 1y
Morr_Books @TheAromaofBooks & @mcctrish - Yessss! Loved all the commentary in this chapter, but yikes in regards to "They must find their level." 1y
Ruthiella Love Mr. Beebe. ❤️ 1y
Clare-Dragonfly These people all seem to know what they‘re talking about, but I can‘t figure it out! 😂 And I looked up what the chambermaid says to Beebe—it appears to translate as “it‘s okay, I‘m old.” 🤣 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - At least that's better than “it's okay, YOU'RE old“ 😂 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks That‘s what I thought it was at first—and yes, you‘re right! 😂 1y
Bklover I can‘t quite picture Lucy playing the piano. I picture her pounding away with enthusiasm playing some very sad piece of music. I do like Beebe, but the rest of them- insecure snobs! Now I shall go “find my level”🙄🙄 1y
julieclair I am having trouble understanding this new friendship between Charlotte and Miss Lavish 1y
julieclair And I'm wondering if the "landslide ate my novel" story is true. 1y
BarkingMadRead @julieclair it seems so extreme! And to forget every word you wrote? 🙄 1y
dabbe @BarkingMadRead At least the novel didn't blow into the wind and the sexy housekeeper had to jump into the “lake“ to retrieve it! #channelingloveactually 1y
Allylu I‘m not getting the posts. Maybe I slipped off the list because I just read posts and didn‘t comment last time? Would you please add me back on? I enjoy your #hashtags so much! 1y
BarkingMadRead @Allylu you never have to comment…. Except when I ask if you want in on the next book! I‘ll add you! 1y
Allylu Thanks! 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair I was wondering if she‘d left it on a train… but she hasn‘t ended up with a baby by mistake 😂😂😂 1y
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣👶 1y
TheBookHippie I must say … gossips abound and also gads what snobs reminds me a bit of our Excellent Women read! 1y
rubyslippersreads I must have forgotten to request a tag. Can you please add me? Thanks. 1y

Cranford | Elizabeth Gaskell
post image
Pickpick

Finished last week with the #Pemberlittens I quite enjoyed Cranford, a quick & amusing read. Cranford‘s small town vignettes highlight its quirky residents, including Bessie the cow. I especially liked Gaskell‘s sly humor in quotes like “I'll not listen to reason...Reason always means what someone else has got to say.” And her astute observations such as “Many a one has been comforted in their sorrow by seeing a good dish come upon the table.”

DebinHawaii Thanks to @BarkingMadRead for the excellent hosting & #hashtags 2y

peanutnine This was so great! I love that Peter brought them all together again 🥰 2y
Ruthiella Wonderful ending. Thanks so much for leading us in this read-along. It was awesome! ❤️👏👏👏 2y
dabbe Leave it to a MAN to have to fix the ladies, so to speak. 😏 Still, I will miss Cranford and these wonderful ladies. Thanks for leading us and making us laugh, @BarkingMadRead. 💙💚💙 2y
Allylu Reading this with you folks was soooo much fun! Love the #hashtags. Thank you! 2y
AnnR Lol @dabbe :-) Thank you to @BarkingMadRead for another fun discussion. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly Thank goodness, the book ended before Peter died 😂 Thanks for the hashtags! 2y
Vansa I could not love this more. I absolutely love how Peter continues to be cheeky and invent stories about shooting cherubs.Mrs.Jamieson is obnoxious,I love how Gaskell very cleverly shows the slow acceptance of a more fluid form of interactions among classes- Ms.Matty is " in trade",Martha and her husband live with her,Lady Glenmire thinks nothing of chucking her meaningless title. Its interesting that Georgette Heyer wrote nearly 200 years later(1/2 2y
Vansa (2/2) and displays far more rigid views towards class. Absolute delight and thank you for this, I would never had read this if not for this excellent reading group #Pemberlittenz 2y
julieclair This was such a fun read! The Cranford ladies are a hoot! Reading it together made it all the more fun. Thanks for another great job as host, @BarkingMadRead ! 👏 2y
rubyslippersreads Like @Clare-Dragonfly I‘m somewhat concerned for Peter‘s safety. 😆 Thanks for hosting a great readalong @BarkingMadRead 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y
mcctrish I think Peter broke the curse 🙏🏻🙏🏻 thank you so much for leading us @BarkingMadRead this was a really fun read 2y
willaful So what do we think -- Peter marry one of the Cranford ladies or no? Which would be safer? I like your take, @mcctrish !

I just remembered, I was surprised to see the term “cast up her accounts“ in the book. I've only encountered it before as slang for... er... feeling unwell. 😄
(edited) 2y
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks this was my #bookspin I finished both this month already! Finally ahead of the game for a change lol 2y
TheAromaofBooks I genuinely loved this one, which was a huge surprise because I HATED North & South! But this one was full of such gentle humor and likable characters, and not nearly as many funerals as I feared!! 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Vansa - I do think Heyer's books are set in the earlier Regency period vs. Cranford's Victorian era. Also, Heyer's stories tend to focus on a richer, more upper class than we find in Cranford, so I think that also changes how various class interactions are portrayed. But it was fun to see some of the distinctions change throughout the story!! 2y
Vansa @TheAromaofBooks I know they're set in a different time period! Obviously😀I'm talking about the author's own attitudes, not the characters'.Heyer demonstrates the sort of attitudes towards class that Mrs.Jamieson does,if you read her books. 2y

Ok #pemberlittens what should the #hashtagbrigade read next? Let‘s come up with some ideas and then we will vote in the next few days. It could be another #austenadjacent book or a #chunksterfromhell #youdecide

Bookwormjillk I‘m still intrigued by 2y
Bookwormjillk Or you know, whatever you all want. I can survive anything as long as it‘s limited to a chapter a day 🤣 2y

TheBookHippie #chunksterfromhell 🤣💯😅👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 2y
mcctrish @TheBookHippie are we reading Lady Chatterly‘s lover with #sundaybuddyread ? 2y
mcctrish I‘m not sure what all you‘ve read so far so I will just watch the suggestions roll in 2y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish yes !!!! AUGUST! 2y
ravenlee No more Bronte! 2y
BarkingMadRead @ravenlee I feel that in my soul! 2y
Librarybelle I‘m up for whatever! 2y
IndoorDame @ravenlee definitely need a break from those ladies 🤣 2y
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie ooh, I hadn‘t realized. Fun! I haven‘t read that in 20 yrs (edited) 2y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame came up in a book last year and we decided to read it. I read it 37 years ago 👀😅 2y
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I‘m super impressed you remember the exact number! 2y
Morr_Books Since I am new to this, have y'all read any Elizabeth Gaskell? 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books the #pemberlittens read one last year at some point, I think? North and South, I believe! 2y
Morr_Books @BarkingMadRead So sorry to have missed that one! 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books there‘s always Cranford 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead I loved Excellent women more books by that author is okay! 2y
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie we read that one last year as well! I should keep a list! 2y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 🤣 math . I took detention for reading it senior year. Only whores read DH Lawrence 👀 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead I read it with you but are there more by her we can read? 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead oooo they look good! But I‘ll read anything 🤣 #hashtags 2y
eeclayton @Bookwormjillk I'd be interested in Tess too, but I'm also open to whatever #hashtagbrigadeforever 2y
TheAromaofBooks I looked up a few lists of suggestions for what to read after Austen! 😂 A Glass of Blessings was on the list, along with The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford, The Gentleman's Daughter by Amanda Vickery, and Jane Austen's Letters edited by Deirdre Le Faye. And this list has 50 suggestions! https://www.silverpetticoatreview.com/50-books-love-jane-austen/ It's a rather dangerous list for my TBR, I must admit! 2y
IndoorDame The Pym ones look great and I haven‘t read her yet, so I‘m leaning towards that, but I did really enjoy North and South so Cranford would get a yes from me too 2y
TheAromaofBooks This one sounds particularly intriguing - originally published in 1914, it seems like it must be one of the earliest forms of fanfiction! 2y
AllDebooks If you fancy a change from Victorian ladies, I suggest E.M. Forster. He's often compared to Austen and he was a complete Janeite https://thejaneaustenproject.com/2010/07/28/illicit-reading/ 2y
Morr_Books I second E.M. Forster - like A Room with a View or A Passage to India. 2y
BarkingMadRead So many great suggestions! I have 5 on our list so far! 2y
Morr_Books @TheAromaofBooks I never heard of this one, but it is on my TBR now. 😀 2y
DebinHawaii @TheAromaofBooks I think we mentioned reading Old Friends and New Fancies a while back & it still intrigues me. It would get my vote. 2y
Ruthiella @ravenlee @IndoorDame No more Brontë? ? I think I‘ve reached saturation point too. @BarkingMadRead I vote for Hardy because I‘ve never read anything from him and feel like I should. Or Vanity Fair by Thackary. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Morr_Books @DebinHawaii - It definitely went on my TBR!! 2y
willaful I could go for Gaskell or Forster. Never read Cranford or A Passage to India. (Or did I read Cranford? Hmm...) 2y
Bklover I missed Agnes (been painting my house) so I shouldn‘t vote this time, but I do love a good #hashtagbrigade chunkster! 2y
StayCurious So many awesome suggestions! Thanks to everyone for being involved! 2y
Aimeesue I‘m a #Pymphomaniac, so . . 2y
ravenlee I‘ve read both Tess and Vanity Fair in the past year, so I‘d be out for either of those (or Cranford for the same reason). I will say VF might be a tough one so close behind Middlemarch, as it‘s another long one with long stretches of nothing happening. I personally liked Tess more, though it was hard because of the subject matter. 2y

In a really busy month with lingering health stuff, I‘m pretty amazed that I read 12 books.🎉 It was a great reading month as I had several books I really enjoyed & a couple that I‘m sure with make my Top books of 2023 list. My favorite was the audiobook Remarkably Bright Creatures which I tossed into the mix when I had headaches & work commutes & I‘m so glad I did! Close behind was The Undertaking of Heart and Mercy from my #AuldLangSpine list ⬇️

DebinHawaii …from @Laughterhp & I also really liked The Dead Romantics from her list. I read 2 series books for #SeriesLove2023 (still need to publish my list) & 1 was for #DiverseCozy #buddyread I read both a book & novella for #SundayBuddyRead & finally finished a book for review & 1 for my foodie book club. My big fail was not getting into Middlemarch with the #PemberLittens -I just couldn‘t seem to catch up or care. 🤦🏻‍♀️But otherwise I‘m happy! 📚🎉 2y
TheBookHippie I can‘t believe I‘m still with Middiemarch 😵‍💫😂🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
