BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame I looked it up, it‘s more of a charitable institution for fallen women, it‘s basically a rehab to make them “fit for society” 🙄 3mo

Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking a penitentiary must be more like a workhouse. A place for “fallen women” makes sense—a place for penitents… I‘m disappointed in my Penguin Classics edition having endnotes, but not one that explains “penitentiary.” 3mo

Ishikawa has a fascinating viewpoint, having been repatriated to North Korea as a 13 year old. It‘s an incredibly angry read.
