Hamlet | William Shakespeare
post image

I saw part of the 1948 Olivier Hamlet last night, and it gave me the urge to reread this. It's been a few years, but it's one of my favorite Shakespearean plays. Nothing like a reread of an old favorite on a cold winter's night!

#Shakespeare #Literature #Hamlet

TheBookHippie My son is reading this in English currently. Had to dig mine out! 1d
GingerAntics 🧡🧡🧡 This is a fav of mine as well 1d
TiredLibrarian @TheBookHippie I first read it in HS too, and I liked it but didn't love it. I think I needed some more life experience to appreciate it. Funny how books can hit you differently depending on where you are in life when you read them! 22h

TiredLibrarian @GingerAntics Glad you love it too! ❤️ 22h
TheBookHippie @TiredLibrarian oh I feel that way about so many books! 22h
GingerAntics @TiredLibrarian I have some rather unconventional ideas about this play. You have no idea… and they all stem from the “choose your own adventure” version of it. lol 20h
TiredLibrarian @GingerAntics I'm intrigued! 16h
GingerAntics @TiredLibrarian by the choose your own adventure version of Hamlet or my crazy musings? lol 10h

I'm a sucker for stories that delve into the internal politics of relatively insignificant groups (town councils, offices, or in this case, the residents of the Emma Lazarus retirement home and their upcoming production of Hamlet) and elevate them to epic proportions. A witty, comic novel that transforms into something heavier and darker by the end, a meditation on trauma and guilt that chimes beautifully with the play at the center of the story.

Suet624 Hi, fellow Vermonter. How are you doing? 3d
The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 That's a tough one. 😅 Good, at the moment, but with a cloud of disaster hovering ever-present on the periphery (like a lot of other feds, or just people in general, I suppose). How about you? 3d
Suet624 Oh shoot - I didn't realize your work situation. I'm so sorry. This current situation is such a disaster in so many areas it's hard to pick just one. I'm okay - just shoveling a lot. Told my kids if social security is taken away they'll have to take care of me. At least 2 of the kids seem amenable. :) But of course I worry about all the other things happening to friends and neighbors. It's hard knowing what we could have had. Best wishes to you. 3d
The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 It's true, everywhere you look it's impending disaster. I don't really know what to do at the moment but keep putting one foot in front of the other and taking it one day at a time (and find respite in cliches, apparently 😁). 3d

At the start of the last 4 years, I've taken a picture of my TBR shelf to track how it's changing over time. It's clearly expanding for one thing 🤔 And there is some overlap between years: even though it's not too much to read in a year, there's still e-books and others I read right away for challenges or readalongs. I try to read everything within 2 years, but Jim Crace's The Devil's Larder has remained for 3, so I'll have to get to it soon!

Ruthiella Neat! I also have books that carry over, some for ahem, longer than three years. 🙈 1mo
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella I have some plus ten that seriously need looking at!! LOL 1mo
sarahbarnes This is cool! Lots of great books in here. Idaho is so good. 1mo

BarbaraBB Very interesting. And I loved Idaho too 1mo
CarolynM What a great idea. I‘ve got too many TBR shelves to fit in one photo 😂 1mo
Billypar @Ruthiella @TheBookHippie @CarolynM Part of my shelf that mostly has read books to give away also had unread books that I've sort of lost interest in. Call it a 'TBRS' shelf ('To Be Read...Someday' 😆) 1mo
Billypar @sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I don't remember specifics, but something about the Idaho reviews on Litsy told me it was one I'd enjoy - will hopefully find out sometime this year! 1mo
catiewithac I'm reading the sequel to Vita Nostra right now 3w
Billypar @catiewithac Oh cool - I didn't know it had a sequel. I hope to get to Vita in the next few months or so - I've heard great things. 3w

I love a good Shakespeare reference. After Trump‘s meeting with Putin and disastrous news conference, John Bolton told Republican Senator Roy Blunt that Putin will always be Putin and took the opportunity to make this reference to Hamlet. #thedivider #vladimirputin #donaldtrump #peterbaker #susanglasser #ushistory #internationalpolitics #worldhistory #politicalscience #russia #unitedstates #johnbolton #hamlet

A little Sunday night Shakespeare for the soul. Not quite halfway through the tagged book yet, and still making up my mind about it, but there's no doubt that the project it chronicles - a two-year, worldwide tour performing Hamlet in every country on earth- is grand, audacious, and worth learning more about. #CurrentlyReading

Mehso-so

I‘m going to be a party pooper. I read it all but either it all went over my head or it just didn‘t resonate at all with me or both. I got a glimpse of the restrictions and omnipresent danger imposed by Israel on the Palestinians, for sure. But the rest of it did not capture any emotion from me other than “when will I finish this damn thing?” Shortlisted on the Women‘s Prize list, I‘m delighted that Brotherless Night won.

Tamra I have not stacked this one. I‘m just not super thrilled with novels focused on acting or plays or even writing. Go figure. 🤷🏾‍♀️ 8mo
Suet624 @Tamra yeah, I think this one wouldn‘t be for you then. 😊 8mo
Jas16 I am really happy that Brotherless Night won as well. 8mo

An actress who lives in London goes to back to Palestine to visit her sister and ends up taking part in a production of Hamlet. Slow moving but often intense, I liked this but wish I had gone with a print version over audio.

Suet624 I can imagine. 8mo
