In its modern usage, innovation is the idea of progress jammed into a criticism-proof jack-in-the-box...

We first heard "El Pueblo Unido" years ago when we were gifted this Inti-Illimani Historico anthology by some Chilean friends. My teen rediscovered it through friends two weeks ago and has been playing it daily on piano. It feels appropriate and moving at the moment.

Sace PS: this would be a great song to teach the future tense in Spanish (I have teacher brain 😂) 3d
ImperfectCJ @Sace It very much would be! I should suggest it to my son's Spanish teacher this next year (if she's not already thought of it). 3d

Paine‘s passion against a monarchical government is present in this short treatise. It may be short, but it packs a punch.

250 years later, it‘s a reminder of the struggle for independence in the American colonies. I‘m glad I took the time to revisit this and ponder how much this relates to today‘s political climate.

Librarybelle @Butterfinger @TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread @kspenmoll @IriDas So sorry I did not follow up sooner—yesterday was not a good mental health day. I‘m glad I read this…I hope this reading brought you what you had hoped, whether it is the feeling of hope or better understanding past struggles or even how eerily similar the struggles are between then and now. Thank you! 5d
kspenmoll Please do not apologize for taking care of yourself! I read it in spurts & it helped reinforce just what our founders were thinking, hoping, & felt forced to do-demand independence from England. And fight a war to get it. (edited) 5d

TheBookHippie I enjoyed the reread. It helps to see thoughts of what the dream was. Always take care of you first. 💙💙💙💙 5d
Deblovestoread Agree with @kspenmoll Taking care of yourself is the most important thing. The rest will happen when it happens. I didn‘t make very good progress. My Libby copy didn‘t give me an option to open on my kindle and I hate reading on my phone. So I‘m going to get a physical copy and try again. 5d

""The will of the nation" is one of those expressions which have been most profusely abused by the wily and the despotic of every age. To the eyes of some it has been represented by the venal suffrages of a few of the satellites of power; to others by the votes of a timid or an interested minority; and some have even discovered it in the silence of a people, on the supposition that the fact of submission established the right of command."

A brief book on the ways to challenge tyranny. Important and timely in the world we currently live in.

As these and other critics have demonstrated again and again, a sizable number of people polled either know nothing about the matters those polls purport to measure or hold no opinion about them. "The first question a pollster should ask," the sociologist Leo Bogart advised in 1972, is "'Have you thought about this at all? Do you have an opinion?"

ChaoticMissAdventures I always find it interesting, who do these people poll? Never in my life have I gotten a call or something for a poll. I live in Oregon so vote from home so no voting place to be polled from. And I think like many I never answer unknown callers, so who are they polling? 6d
charl08 @ChaoticMissAdventures Lepore pretty says that the approach is broken - and partly for the reason you said: who answers landlines anymore. And apparently its illegal in the US to autophone mobiles (cellphones) so only landlines to ring. 6d

I have finally read this important document that reasoned with colonists to break away from the tyranny of a British king. He used Scriptures and history and just plain common sense to support his claim. I don't understand why I have never been asked to read it, but I thank @Librarybelle for the push. It is very readable and it is still relevant after 250 years.

TheBookHippie It was a good reread for me. We had to read it in highschool. 1w
