I‘ve been wanting to read August‘s #Bookspin for a long, long time (and it gives me an excuse to reread Jane Eyre ❤️).

My #Doublespin is yet another short story collection in the Sookie Stackhouse series.

This book, a prequel to Jane Eyre, was fascinating. And so very sad. Unfortunately, I now see Mr. Rochester in a new, and unflattering light. He has been crossed off my #bookboyfriend list.

I really enjoyed reading this with the #hashtagbrigade , excellently hosted (as always) by @BarkingMadRead

This was a very challenging read for me! I might have enjoyed it more if I had read Jane Eyre shortly beforehand. My murky memories of Jane Eyre from 40 years ago really didn‘t help me out. I was grateful for the detailed notes in this volume though. Even so—just not for me.

KAO @dabbe “Better books ahead” is always the battle cry! (Plus, I enjoyed reading Rebecca so much that it was a tough act to follow.) (edited) 7mo

This is touted as a background story to Rochester‘s wife in the attic from Jane Eyre ( not officially a retell of a classic)
It‘s a tiny book, almost a novella, but what a wild haunting story. The POV changes, narrators are unreliable- I feel like I‘m the crazy one. What is real? What is happening 🤯

dabbe I just finished rereading Rochester's “explanation“ to Jane in JE. Totally different take this time around. I feel for “Bertha“, but both Jane and Rochester are so derogatory to her! It's awful! 😱 7mo

Part 3: whoa #backtoAasnarrator #sheisinthornfield #gracepoole #Adreamsthereisafire 🔥#hashtagbrigade

Librarybelle The dream was interesting. It was a nice tie-in to Jane Eyre and how the fire started. I did like that connection. 7mo

Bookwormjillk Is that a picture of aka Bertha or me reading this book? Congrats to your daughter! 7mo
IndoorDame I really like that it ends at Thornfield bc I think tying it back to JE so concretely, and starting the fire with a dream were great choices. But I thought the writing in this section was the weakest, and I‘m itching to reread JE now, and I‘m guessing if I do that feeling will only get stronger. 7mo
IndoorDame Also terrifying photo! England is clearly bad for the complexion 😂😂😂 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk @indoordame 🤣🤣 I was trying to find Bertha in the red dress, but the pics were too blurry 🙄 7mo
Aimeesue This section was so well done. The depiction of disordered thinking in someone with mental health issues was brilliant. 7mo
5feet.of.fury I liked the ending, but it seemed like a big jump from part 2 to tie everything up 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I do have a theory about why Richard was so eager to marry her off after part 3: he was afraid she would marry Sandi, since they were apparently into each other. And he was Black, so obviously that wouldn‘t do. I still don‘t understand why she agreed to marry Rochester though 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
dabbe @Librarybelle The color red, too. Reminded me of the red room in JE. 7mo
dabbe @IndoorDame 😂😂😂 7mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly EXCELLENT thought that makes total sense in a book where stream of consciousness is everywhere! 👏 👏 👏 7mo
willaful I feel like the book was almost in code. I was missing something I needed to really get it, background or knowledge or a different frame of mind. It was truly heartbreaking nonetheless. 7mo
mcctrish @willaful same! I feel like I almost get it but not quite maybe I need to reread Jane Eyre 7mo
julieclair @Aimeesue I agree about the depiction of disordered thinking. Her decisions seemed so “logical” if you assume her thoughts were “rational”. And to her, they were. 7mo
julieclair I do wonder what would have happened if Rochester had really loved her and treated her as a cherished wife. Would she still have gone mad? 7mo
julieclair @BarkingMadRead How wonderful about the baby shower! 7mo
rubyslippersreads @dabbe @Librarybelle I thought of that too. 7mo
currentlyreadinginCO I don't think that I was in the right frame of mind for this, I ended up just confused and tired after this one! 7mo

I feel bad for not liking this one as much as other fellow #PemberLittens did. The second part was so confusing - I‘m not the strongest reader of stream of consciousness understanding, let alone from two perspectives. One has to feel sad for Antoinette whose life did not seem pleasant.

This had been on my to read list for a very long time, so at least I can check it off. #HashtagBrigade #192025 #1966

BarkingMadRead That‘s what I love about Buddy reads, everyone feels differently about the book, and that‘s ok. 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I wasn‘t much of a fan either. I didn‘t have any trouble with the stream of consciousness and very little with the shifting POVs… I just found it lacking. 7mo

4/5 ⭐️s. In looking around, reviews are all over the place on this one. The writing was difficult to comprehend at times because of (I believe) the stream of consciousness POV shifts between Rochester and Antoinette, but I loved the challenge. I got lost inside Antoinette's mind and truly felt for her and her impossible situation. I now understand Rochester better, but that doesn't mean I like Mr. Byronic Badman anymore than I did in JANE EYRE. ⬇️

dabbe The descriptions of the landscape in Jamaica/Dominica were gorgeously lush; one could see why Antoinette's heart belonged there. A post-colonial look at Britain's and France's imposed domination over these islands was heartbreaking to read, but I learned so much history about this period that I didn't know before. Thanks @BarkingMadRead for guiding us through this one. #hashtagbrigade 🌺 7mo
IndoorDame Yes! To all of that!!!! The contrast of the the lush landscape and the bleakness of post-colonial devastation was one of my favorite aspects. 7mo
dabbe @IndoorDame And the contrast with the bleak coldness of England! 🤩🤩🤩 7mo
See All 9 Comments
IndoorDame @dabbe yes! Makes England seem frightening! The first time I read this it was essentially a standalone read (maybe 3 or 4 months after I‘d read Jane Eyre) but I really want to reverse the order and reread Jane Eyre on the tail of this 7mo
dabbe @IndoorDame I probably should, too. Especially where Rochester explains about his “wife“ to Jane! 7mo
IndoorDame @dabbe It‘ll definitely be interesting to hear the actual language in that scene now! …. I‘m super open minded but I cannot imagine a version of that conversation where I forgive someone for not telling me that long before I moved in and we married 🤣🤣🤣 7mo
Aimeesue Great review, and I agree - I loved this one, mostly because I‘ve always hated Rochester and couldn‘t figure out why on earth anyone would find JE romantic. Just Ew, boy. I thought the stream of consciousness in the last part was brilliant. Poor Antoinette. (edited) 7mo

I found this opened up even more with a second read. I get why this isn‘t a popular book on Litsy, but I like experimental fiction & poetic writing & I‘m so impressed by what Rhys was able to do with Antoinette & Rochester‘s characters. The way she was able to open up their backstories, make them each both sympathetic & callous, and leave you in sync with the source story but also have things still feel ambiguous. #hashtagbrigade @BarkingMadRead

BarkingMadRead Well said! There are definitely parts I didn‘t like, but that is usually the case with most books. Overall, I enjoyed it, even the characters you love to hate 7mo
lil1inblue This is probably one of my favorite books. I love what Rhys did with it. Just fascinating. 7mo

Part 1 very clearly demonstrated the hardships her family faced. The rest? I found to be incredibly disjointed &alternate POVs should add more dimension, no reason to do it to add more misery, we know he is terrible from Antoinette. I didn‘t find that it made sense as a contained story. The background for this book is longer than the book in this edition& I needed to look up the history. It might be art but I didn‘t think it was good.

5feet.of.fury Couldn‘t have done it without #hashtagbrigade @BarkingMadRead 7mo
BarkingMadRead I was hoping this would make me think differently about R, but it only made me dislike him more! That POV change was not necessary, although I did like the POV in the third part. That second part was messed up 7mo
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead I liked the 3rd part, the haziness& the 2 POVs 7mo
See All 6 Comments
Doppoetry It's recommended to read Jane Eyre before this novel, but even then this feels like it has little to do with Bertha, even if it gives an interesting insight into her supposed life before meeting Rochester. 7mo
5feet.of.fury @Doppoetry I read Jane Eyre (admittedly, long ago) from the footnotes Part 1 pulled from a lot of Rhys‘s own life & it probably would have been better following that path instead of trying to make it fit with Jane Eyre in my opinion, or if anything was more expanded on. 7mo
Doppoetry @5feet.of.fury Oh yeah, I agree, it would have worked so much better as a biography but having it fit the Bertha narrative was so messy 7mo

Aimeesue The Bertha thing is so creepy. NO ONE likes the name Bertha as a lovely and mellifluous name. Liar. (edited) 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Aimeesue it is 💯 messed up. So gross and super passive aggressive 7mo
Aimeesue @BarkingMadRead so controlling. Red flag! Red flag! 🚩 Sigh. Too late. 7mo
Bookwormjillk I keep confusing Rochester with Max DeWinter. We keep reading about these messed up men who believe themselves to be victims. 7mo
Librarybelle I was so confused when the narration kept changing. Admittedly, this one is a bit of a struggle for me…I feel like I‘ve not found a good rhythm yet with the writing, and we‘re near the end! 7mo
mcctrish @Librarybelle I keep wondering if I‘m the crazy one because WTF is happening 7mo
5feet.of.fury The Bertha thing, separating her from Christophine… husband is a creep. Wish the zombi got him 7mo
mcctrish @Aimeesue Bertha is brutal 7mo
5feet.of.fury @Librarybelle yeah, I do not get this one. I read through 2 pages & had no idea whose POV or what had happened. 7mo
Librarybelle Glad I‘m not the only one, @mcctrish @5feet.of.fury 7mo
IndoorDame @Bookwormjillk This actually does remind me a bit of Rebecca in the sense that all of the characters are unreliable, but there‘s still something about all of them that draws you into their worlds when they‘re the ones talking, and the whole place is intoxicating and bordering on fantastical. 7mo
willaful I continue to have no memory at all of having read this.

I'm furious and disgusted with Rochester. He's totally yellow-wallpapering Antoinette.
7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I still don‘t get why Richard wanted Antoinette to marry Rochester so badly. She had plenty of money, she could have lived independently! @IndoorDame Yes, I was also reminded of Rebecca, and you‘ve articulated why very well! 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if he just didn‘t want to feel responsible for her anymore? She would have been fine by herself, I don‘t know why he felt the need to marry her off 7mo
julieclair I am so disappointed in Rochester. He used to be one of my book boyfriends, but now he‘s off the list! 7mo

I guess I expected more out of this book—something surprising, different from what Bertha‘s life obviously would have been like before the events of Jane Eyre. And why did we need the Rochester POV sections? To establish him as a huge jerk? We‘re told in those sections that Antoinette is in love with him and I really would have liked to see her fall in love. But I don‘t understand what either of them or Richard got from the marriage. 🤷🏻‍♀️

5feet.of.fury Poor Coco. I‘m glad Aunt Cora is coming back. I‘m so confused with the Mason/Cosway family tree. 8mo
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle it was a lot! @Bookwormjillk I know that I read this in high school, and I remember that whole 1st part, and being confused about the races/race relations & our teacher thinking we were all very stupid. Which if she‘s the teacher, teaching us & we all did not understand I think that‘s a her problem lol 8mo
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury definitely a her problem! 8mo
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury Mason is Antoinette‘s stepdad, but I didn‘t like her saying nee Cosway, because I always thought that was for marriage 🤷🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Clare-Dragonfly I found this quick to read but difficult to follow. If the present-tense portion near the end was a dream, were the other present-tense portions dreams? But I don‘t remember what they were anymore. I guess I‘m following the broad strokes of Antoinette‘s life, though. 8mo
dabbe Rhys writes as if she expects us to know and understand all about British and French colonialism in the Caribbean and the so-called pecking order determined by how much black blood was in you. I admit to having read some study guides for this one, and it helped tremendously. I think the strange man at the end of Part 1 (that Mason alludes to) is Rochester. #oytothevey! 😳 (edited) 8mo
willaful @BarkingMadRead Maybe it's one of those usages that changed? Like in Austen and other books of the time, “stepmother“ and “mother-in-law“ often seem to be switched, IIRC.

@dabbe Yes, it's frustrating! I'm confused too -- and have NO memory of having read this before, though I know I did. Too young no doubt.
8mo
mcctrish I forgot what day we were meeting 🤦🏻‍♀️ this first part felt ripe with ominous vibes and while I get the white negro and black Englishman taunts I hadn‘t realized how angry they were ( although Tia not coming back with the stolen dress should have clued me in) poor Patrick ( and horse and parrot) what in earth will part 2 bring 😳 this is a wild fast ride. The mom was a piece of work but her yelling “no “ when Antoinette went to visit 💔 8mo
mcctrish I am curious what was the matter with Patrick ( some kind of palsy ?) and Antoinette was ill for 6 weeks not from being hit in the head from a stone ( thx Tia) but because her mother tried to kill her?! 8mo

Although the premise was interesting the writing style of this novel was too erratic and jumped from idea to idea without any transition. I shouldn't have been surprised by the racism but that was another very unpleasant experience reading this.

The author's life experience was a huge inspiration for this, considering that she is of mixed race. (As an immigrant who moved a lot I can completely relate to all of that)

Doppoetry The novel tries to make Bertha a more sympathetic character but I can't exactly feel bad for colonizers and racists.

I am not a huge fan of Mr.Rochester but he does come off like an intelligent man, despite his temper. I believe it to be a disservice to him as a character in general. I think he could have figured out Bertha's family history with mental illness on his own without being tipped off about it.
(edited) 8mo
Doppoetry I was hoping this novel would delve more into the mental illness aspect. But, it was more focused on blaming everything on Mr. Rochester and society's mistreatment of her, instead of a wider cause. (not that abuse can't make you mentally ill, sometimes mental illness runs in the family) (edited) 8mo
Doppoetry There is absolutely a wider discussion about imperialism/colonialism here and I completely understand the harm of it, but I don't think it's presented very well in this novel. Rochester's opinions on the colonized Jamaica feel stretched a bit too far, even if you read between the lines of Jane Eyre. 8mo

Read this for #Dominica for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 but it can also be read for #Jamaica.

This was a very atmospherically written book and ideal for people who wanted to know some of Bertha‘s back story from Jane Eyre. I found it a very sad story, with little hope or lightness in it. The writing style really wasn‘t for me and can‘t say I particularly enjoyed the book, but I‘m sure I‘m not the intended audience. Just not my genre or style.

Librarybelle No worries! I think #PemberLittens is reading it next year. With its connection to Jane Eyre, it‘s been on my reading radar for quite some time. 13mo
Andrew65 @Librarybelle I was surprised how short it was. I started and finished it today. 13mo
Ruthiella I didn‘t gel with this book either. The writing is evocative, but I didn‘t really have a handle on what was going on. 13mo
Andrew65 @Ruthiella I agree, at points difficult to know who was talking, who was there, where they were, etc. Very hard work as a reader. 13mo
OutsmartYourShelf Hated it. One of the first books I'd use for kindling if it came down to it. 13mo
Andrew65 @OutsmartYourShelf Can well see why. You do wonder how some books become so popular, whilst better written ones get nowhere. 13mo

The thing that I found so striking as I read this was how subtle the writing is and how much breath flows through its 171 pages. The themes of power/control/hatred/safety are prominent. Much can also be said about the feeling of being in-between (colonial generations, nationalities, race, etc.) A lot to ponder, and definitely something I will want to reread in the future.

#Islandvibes Image of my hotel room on Waiheke Island last week.

Oh man this book. I loved Antoinette (the child who grows up to be Bertha in Jane Eyre). Rhys‘ writing is beautiful and although there is violence and tension around Antoinette, I revelled in her survival. And then we spend some time in Rochester‘s head and he made me So Angry. I loved this reading experience and at the same time I want to wring some necks!

Centique @batsy I see what you mean by prickly! I loved this and wasn‘t Christophine amazing 🙌. I will read this again sometime and get even more from it I think - there‘s a lot under the surface. 2y

mjtwo I loved both Antoinette and this book as a uni student. I need to prioritise reading both it and Jane Eyre again to see if I feel the same way 30 years later. (edited) 2y
batsy So glad you loved it! And yes, it's a prickly read that kind of gets under one's skin, doesn't it? 🙂 That's a fantastic view, btw 😍 2y
Centique @Cinfhen thank you. I had the job of organising a night away for a work conference so it was a nice escape - lots of rain again though ☔️☔️☔️ 2y
Centique @mjtwo I read Jane Eyre again in my 40s and for me, it still was a cracking good read although I wasn‘t so enamoured of Rochester second time around. I want to read it again soon with a different view of Bertha in mind too. 2y
Centique @batsy I will be thinking about it for a while 🤔 and thank you 😘 2y
jlhammar Wow, that looks gorgeous! Great book. So glad you enjoyed! 2y
Cinfhen Too bad about the rain 2y
mjtwo @Centique I felt that way about Heathcliff! As a teenager, I thought he was so romantic; as an adult, I think he was abusive. 2y
Centique @mjtwo yes!! I reread Wuthering Heights too and it was a completely different experience the second time. As a teen I was 100% team Heathcliff 😂😂 2y
Reggie Lololol I thought those were rough waves and was about to say I hope you‘re ok but they‘re just clouds. 2y
Centique @Reggie they do look like waves! 🤣😂 2y
Centique I reckon you would like this book @Reggie this young wild girl in an almost haunted island (wild in the best kind of way) 2y
Reggie I have it stacked but do I need to have read Jane Eyre before reading this one? 2y
Centique @Reggie nah! I mean there are probably two facts from JE that are reflected in the book that make it more interesting just thematically. I‘ll put them below 2y
Centique 1 - that Rochesters house gets burnt down at the end of JE. 2 - at some point in JE Rochester loses his sight 2y
Centique @Reggie also Rhys is wildly different as a writer and what she is trying to do. She‘s basically taking a two dimensional character from a famous novel and giving her a complete back story - it‘s a rebellious act I think, and fascinating. 2y
Reggie Love the passion, Paula. I will definitely check it out. 2y

My pick for #TitlesandTunes #Islandvibes is Wide Sargasso Sea which I‘ve been meaning to read for ages (I‘m on a Jean Rhys kick at the moment). It‘s set in Jamaica and so I chose a song that was written by a Jamaican to go with it. Cherry Oh Baby was written by Eric Donaldson but I grew up listening to the UB40 version. I‘m sure the song and the book have VERY different vibes!

It‘s not often that a retelling becomes a classic in its own right. There‘s so much packed into this short, meandering, atmospheric whirlwind that I think I‘d have to reread it to really take it all in the way I often do with poetry. Will I? Not immediately, but maybe someday.

It‘s easy to forget the phrase “a well read book” started as a physical thing. How many times do you think a volume has to be read before it becomes this? It‘s something we rarely see these days now that books are infinitely more affordable than they once were. Even library books rarely come to me like this. I love the reminder of how many people have read this before me. Kind of like reading the names off the old circulation cards.

ElizaMarie Well read books make my heart happy :) 2y
Leftcoastzen Sometimes those old books that were placed in the old library bindings, so well read the edge of the pages are velvety soft . 2y
IndoorDame @Leftcoastzen yes, I love that. These pages are getting a bit soft like that. But sadly, this one won‘t last like the old library bindings. I can‘t figure out why a library would invest in a plain paperback binding for something that‘s already a classic… 2y

This is a short novel, but there‘s a lot to consider, especially about culture and names. The Caribbean setting was vibrant, yet the feeling of conflict was ever present. There were shifting perspectives and it always felt a bit disjointed, reflecting how the characters never find a way to trust or communicate clearly. It‘s definitely an interesting companion read for Jane Eyre.

Told in 3 parts, we see the childhood, early adulthood, and some time shortly thereafter of Antoinette, a white Creole/Englishwoman born in the West Indies. I liked the depiction of the societal tension between former white colonialists and black islanders descended from former slaves. I did find the writing a little odd. Soft pick for me.

I first picked up Jane Eyre for a uni course, and I wish we had to read this book as part of it too.

It gave me so much to think about, and while it is a different style and tone to Brontë, I think it helps make the story and the characters of Rochester and “Bertha” that much more interesting.

Finished in a day too, so that‘s a bonus!

I liked but didn‘t love this. The first part, Antoinette‘s perspective, was my favorite, but I didn‘t much care for the unnamed groom‘s (Rochester) POV. The last part came very abruptly, and it was disjunct and weird - but it works because we‘re inside the mind of a madwoman. I wish there had been a bit more to the whole story.

Lindy This has been on my TBR forever. Based on your description, I think I will like it. 3y
ravenlee @Lindy I hope you do. It‘s a quick read, though some of the dialogue is in dialect so it slowed down a bit to decipher it. I never liked Rochester, and he‘s even less appealing and sympathetic in this story. 3y

“I do not like what I have seen of this honourable gentleman (Mr. Rochester). Stiff. Hard as a board and stupid as a foot, in my opinion, except where his own interests are concerned.”

Pretty much my opinion of Mr. Rochester, too. My MIL and SIL swear eternal devotion to Jane Eyre and the cult of Rochester, and I‘ve never understood why. I find him repugnant.

Ruthiella He is an a**hat. But on the third reading of Jane Eyre I accepted that Jane truly loves him and he her. 3y
ravenlee @Ruthiella I‘ll buy that, but I‘m no big fan of Jane either. They‘re welcome to each other. Hubby watched the 2011 JE with Michael Fassbender with me last year. His big takeaway was “what the hell is wrong with my mother and sister for loving this guy?” Which made me feel better about marrying into this family, a bit. 3y

I love Jane Eyre and have been meaning to read this for ages. It is fascinating to read this imagined backstory of the mad woman in the attic. And it certainly challenges you to rethink Rochester. While enthralling to a point, the prose was sometimes so ethereal and wandering that I felt a bit lost. But well worth reading.

Antoinette Cosway moves from a traumatic childhood of loss and pain to an arranged marriage with a man who cares more about her money than her.

Made me think of The Yellow Wallpaper. A fascinating exploration of of the expectations of a woman with wealth, and what happens when she brushes those expectations aside. Also, very lush descriptions.

This felt very disjointed, and I feel it actually suffered by switching POV multiple times. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
