Used Books
Used Books: Marking Readers in Renaissance England | William H. Sherman
51 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
In a recent sale catalog, one bookseller apologized for the condition of a sixteenth-century volume as "rather soiled by use." When the book was displayed the next year, the exhibition catalogue described it as "well and piously used [with] marginal notations in an Elizabethan hand [that] bring to life an early and earnest owner"; and the book's buyer, for his part, considered it to be "enlivened by the marginal notes and comments." For this collector, as for an increasing number of cultural historians and historians of the book, a marked-up copy was more interesting than one in pristine condition. William H. Sherman recovers a culture that took the phrase "mark my words" quite literally. Books from the first two centuries of printing are full of marginalia and other signs of engagement and use, such as customized bindings, traces of food and drink, penmanship exercises, and doodles. These marks offer a vast archive of information about the lives of books and their place in the lives of their readers. Based on a survey of thousands of early printed books, Used Books describes what readers wrote in and around their books and what we can learn from these marks by using the tools of archaeologists as well as historians and literary critics. The chapters address the place of book-marking in schools and churches, the use of the "manicule" (the ubiquitous hand-with-pointing-finger symbol), the role played by women in information management, the extraordinary commonplace book used for nearly sixty years by Renaissance England's greatest lawyer-statesman, and the attitudes toward annotated books among collectors and librarians from the Middle Ages to the present. This wide-ranging, learned, and often surprising book will make the marks of Renaissance readers more visible and legible to scholars, collectors, and bibliophiles.

Hubby and I went on a date to the used book store. We somehow limited ourselves to six books. 2 for him and 4 for me. #bookhaul

wanderinglynn Great haul! I love all things Gaiman & that‘s one of my faves. Dumplin‘ is also a cute story. 5y

Exploring NOLA this weekend! This is my oldest, who‘s about as obsessed with books as I am! He‘s quick to grab the most interesting (or largest) book and plop down on the floor at any moment. Bookstores feel like home 🖤 Do any of u search out bookstores while on vacay??

Tamra Yes! But I‘m the only one who has that on the agenda. 😏 5y
Freespirit Apsolutely...I have been known to travel to a town just for its bookshops! 5y
Palimpsest Every time I go to a new city I look up the bookstores. When I went to NOLA we went to Faulkner House books, but they were about to close. Hope I can make it back sometime. 5y

I'm not sure where I saw this but I've decided to give it a go. A subscription box where you get 2 used books for 9.99 or 4 for 14.99 . You can also cancel at anytime. I did the 2 books to test it out. They're based here in NC, which I thought was cool.

If you'd like to try it with me here's a referral link. Hopefully I'll get something that I love and normally wouldn't have picked up. https://www.usedbooksmonthly.com/refer/Victo-VSQJMYSK

There is a new used bookstore/cafe in my city and it‘s adorable. This photo is from their Facebook page, but they opened yesterday and the amount of people that were in there was great. So if anyone is in the Worcester, MA area it‘s called Bedlam Book Cafe.

I had the day all to myself so I hit up some used book shops. #BookAttic in Madison which has mostly old and sometimes rare books. Then #McKays which is truly overwhelming! It was a good, very bookish day!

#usedbooks #shoplocal

TheSpineView I love used book stores! You walk and they have the most unique smell. 6y
2BR02B Wow! The one on the bottom looks like an IKEA of books. 6y
Seekingtardis Oh my glob there is a McKays is Chattanooga TN, where I‘m from, as well and I miss that place so much!! They are the biggest reason I‘m a book hoarder!! 😍😍😂 6y

britt_brooke @emilyesears Book Attic is pretty small but a decent little store. 6y
obviateit Wow! That looks awesome! 6y
leahbird I used to shop at the original on Kingston Pike in Knoxville, in the late 90s. It was a regular sized used bookstore. Then they opened the current one on Papermill and it's massive. Looks just like your pic of the Nashville one. 6y
britt_brooke @leahbird We drove past the Knoxville one a few months ago while driving to Gatlinburg. They look identical. Huge and overwhelming! 6y

Kaye Don‘t fret about the husband. Tell him how much they would‘ve cost new. Then ask him how much he spends on hobbies. Then tell him half of those were for the kids. Then tell him how many hours of entertainment you‘ll have for 10 bucks. My Hubster knows better than to say anything. He knows if he EVER made a comment about the books I buy, I‘d literally spend every dime of his next pay on books. I‘d fill the car. 📓📔📒📕📗📘📙📒📔📓📕📗📙📒📔📓📕📗 7y
MicrobeMom @TheBookKeeper @kaye hubby was not upset. He was thrilled I only spent $10. Now I gotta find room for these books! (edited) 7y
BookaholicNatty @MicrobeMom yessssssss!!!!! Awesome haul!!! There were soooo many books right!???? It‘s crazy trying to look through them all!!! 7y
BookaholicNatty @kaye that just cracked me uppp!!!!! Lol fill the car!!! ❤️❤️😍😍 7y
Kaye @BookaholicNatty I hate it when men nag their wives about money. I usually butt in when I hear it in the stores. I was in line behind a young couple , the guy bought him a video game. The girl bought yarn to make their baby an Afghan. The boy yelled at her to put it back. I told him that blanket is a lot more useful than a video game. Once an old lady wanted to buy vanilla ice cream. On sale. 2 bucks. The old GEEZER with her told her PUT IT BACK 7y
Kaye CONT. I told her I‘d buy the ice cream for her. I told her to go get another cart, aNd I‘d buy her a CARTFUL OF ICE. CREAM . Good grief, she was skin and bones and about 90. Let her have the blasted ice cream. Men make me really angry sometimes. @BookaholicNatty (edited) 7y
MicrobeMom Now I feel bad making my hubby sound like a nag! He is a great husband and I can buy what I want. It is more my own guilt with having two kids and school, karate and dance to pay for. It is my own conscious nagging me than him. I am lucky lady! @Kaye 7y
MicrobeMom @BookaholicNatty I could have spent half the day there. It is quite overwhelming. That is why I don‘t go too often. However today I went by myself and it was awesome. So happy with my book haul! 7y
Kaye @microbemom Now that sounds like me. I worry all the time about how much I spend. My husband has no clue and never asks or cares. Sorry about the rant. I just hear too many men nagging their wives about money. I just want to punch them in the nose. 7y
MicrobeMom @Kaye no problem! I know plenty of men that nag their wives and sometimes it‘s the other way around! Thanks for the support!! Book books and more books I say! Ice cream too! Let the little old lady have her ice cream! 7y
Kaye Amen. Keep stacking those books and eating that ice cream. It‘s good for you. 😁 7y

britt_brooke @BornReadChicago Awesome! So, you definitely have to grab a donut at Fox‘s Donut Den (in same shopping center as Parnassus). I don‘t get down to the city too often, so I‘m gonna tag @Booksnchill and see if she has some more suggestions for you. 😉 7y
Booksnchill @BornReadChicago what kind of time do you have and what are you interested in? There is so much to do downtown! 7y
britt_brooke @Booksnchill Thanks, Rebecca! 💚 7y
BornReadChicago @Booksnchill doing a girls weekend, taking advantage of a yearly trip I get as an ambassador for the Hot Chocolate run - staying in the west end, Thursday through Sunday! We have dinners mostly sorted, I have a friend who graduated Vandy many moons ago and never left, so she‘s given me some great suggestions. Though, I don‘t know how often she visits Parnassus and what‘s in that area. Any suggestions of a quintessential Nashville experience? 7y
Booksnchill @BornReadChicago i have several friends who do that run- how cool! I also graduated Vandy many moons ago so we would perhaps send you the same places but here goes- hit Centennial Park and see the stories high gold statue of Athena in our Parthenon, then take a selfie with the Suffragette statue outside the Parthenon. Lunch or milk shakes at Rotiers the home of the “Cheeseburger in Paradise” on the side street by the park. (Next) (edited) 7y
Booksnchill @BornReadChicago then head down Church Street to the 2017 Library of the Year which is absolutely worth the visit! From there go up sixth avenue to the Historic Hermitage Hotel where the Suffragettes gathered and got the final votes to pass the 19th Amendment (TN was the final state needed) - have a drink in the Oak Bar there and be very sure to check out the Men‘s Room- it is an Art Deco must see- there is a plaque, you are expected! Have Fun! (edited) 7y
BornReadChicago @Booksnchill I was planning on the park/Parthenon, but LOVE the specifics on how to tackle it, along with the food & drink info! Speaking to my type A heart 👍 7y

So I ordered a sort of hard to find book for my #SecretSantaGoesPostal it finally arrived today and I'm a little disappointed with the level of wear and tear. It's still very much a readable copy, but I just wish it was a nicer copy. What do you guys think about a used book? I bought her 2 new books as well as other stuff too.

AmyG I say give it to her. Put a little note on it about how it's not what you thought. Let's just say...I'd understand. Hopefully she/he will too (edited) 7y
abbsinwonderland @AmyG I agree with Amy. I think this is a very understanding community. Just say what happened, you thought it'd be nicer, and I'm sure they'll understand. I certainly wouldn't see it as an issue. It's the thought that counts. 💜 7y

LA_Mead Books are books 😊I'm sure your secret Santa match won't mind... I kind of like them when they have lots of wear and tear. It feels...homey 😊 7y
OrangeMooseReads I personally don‘t mind being gifted a used book. If you have concern do like @AmyG mentioned and put a little note with it. Some times the well loved look adds to the book. 7y
KrystleTheBookSlayer Personally, I would appreciate the book and I don't mind some wear and tear. I do understand the disappointment when you're buying used books for someone else and the books don't come in the condition that's expected though, I've had that happen too! 7y

I can't believe we've been here nearly 14 years, and just discovered this beauty of a used book store. Rooms full of books, homey atmosphere, even an outdoor reading garden. #usedbooklove

There is a chain of used bookstores in NC called Edward McKay's, and they're my #cheapthrills! While I was in grad school, I spent more money than I should have at the Greensboro and Winston-Salem locations. Any time I'm close to an Ed McKay's I have to stop in and see what they have! #lyricalapril

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Yeeeeeeesss!!!! I visit the Winston location every chance I get. A solid 40% of my books and movies come from there. 8y
Cinfhen When I get back to the states I'm going to do some sleuthing in charity shops...I could use some #cheapthrills 8y

The St Clair Shores PL had their used books for sale! Didn't find anything tempting to bring home. It's great the books aren't discarded, but allowed to live a peaceful retirement, lol. #SCSPL

lynneamch Ha! Drove by here a few days ago on my way to visit my mom. After a 9-hour drive, we like get off 94 and drive along the lake to decompress the last few miles. ❤ 8y
CrowCAH @lynneamch I didn't know you were a local Michigander! I love driving along Lakeshore Drive and seeing the water, so cool! 8y
lynneamch We live in Tennessee now, but grew up on Lake St. Clair and visit when we can. 🐟 8y

I don't mind a used book, but an abused book drives me crazy. I was so glad when libraries started using ebooks. Mistreated library books are the worst. Who are those people? #BookishPetPeeves #MarchIntoReading

Varshitha I love used books, but books with folded pages or something written in it drives me crazy.. It makes me want to straighten all the pages which I have done by the way😁 8y

Where does everyone buy their used books online? I currently live in Spain and don't have access to normal book stores. Please help 😁😩📚📖

Moray_Reads I use Abebooks.co.uk. Bookshops and other people around the world use it to sell used books and you can specify the country when you search so that it just shows you local sellers 8y

My husband and I have "date days" on Fridays. Today we decided to walk around our city's downtown. I was super excited to go to a used bookstore I had seen. Books and teas. Bummed to get there and find it permanently closed. ? I felt so bad for not going sooner. But the owner had set this display out front offering free books. They were a pretty random, obscure assortment, but I found a few to "adopt".

Showing some love for our local independent used book shop. Stopped by this morning in hopes for a copy of Maus. Success! #getindie

AnnieReads I would shop there! Cute storefront. 8y
RanaElizabeth That's so cute! 8y
britt_brooke @AnnieReads @RanaElizabeth I love it because it's a rickety old house lined with random book cases. And the owner is super nice. 💚 8y

When I graduated college and got my first teaching job I moved into an apartment kitty-corner from this used book shop - Pageturners. It closed many years ago, and reopened as a bar. I had still been mourning the book shop being gone, but my husband and I finally went last night. It was great! Cozy, chill, and kept the character. I guess if you're going to replace a bookstore, a great bar is a good replacement. And they kept the name!

Good morning, Littens! I am at a Dollar Book Exchange. It will be fun going through these boxes! Everything is a dollar on the bookcases. Everything else is what you can fit in a bag for $10!

haileybean When I buy used books at the little book store in town I will specifically search out copies that have been annotated. I love reading that along someone else's notes with the story. 8y

This is the used bookstore of my teenage years. Everything looks the same. It has since transferred owners, and the new(ish) owner has priced the used books as new. I wouldn't mind this except the books have torn pages, creased spines, and yellowed pages. Bummer. #usedbooks #indiebookstore
