4⭐️

A novella about nuns...in space! Follows a spaceship convent named Our Lady or Impossible Constellations. Diverse characters. Explored how religion and imperialism can intertwine.

My only complaint was I was hoping for some theology discourse in the book but it was still a good read.

🌟5/5🌟

A dark adult fairytale mythologizing the fears surrounding becoming a parent in present day New York that also explores racism and features Norse mythology, witches, and book lovers.

I caught at least two Easter eggs referencing other gothic/horror novels.

(CW/TW for horror themes involving children)

My Sunday morning so far 🐶✨
After some reading I‘ll be tuning in to a local church‘s sermon on YouTube. What strange times huh?

Also it does feel a little weird to be posting on social media on my phone about this book 😂

Ashley_Nicoletto We just braved the grocery store and now to hunker down with some breakfast and books. 5y
underthebelljar @Ashley_Nicoletto We did our grocery shopping yesterday. So strange seeing the shelves empty and everybody so tense... They even have tape on the floor marking out how far apart to stand in line at checkout. Stay safe 💖 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto @BookishJess Our grocery store was surprisingly stocked! And I was super impressed with the procedures they‘d put in place. Like they had a person bleaching the carts as people walked in the door and took one so you knew it was clean. Hope you all stay safe too! These are weird times. 5y

Tbh, in between pick and so-so. More thriller than horror. More gory than it needed to be. And by the end, more questions than answers. Still a high anxiety chilling read.

Wow. My favorite Jackson so far. Great deep characters and an eerie feel throughout. Hubby and I watched the Netflix movie last night which was good but as usual I prefer the book. Some of the changes they made were strange and very much changed the subtext.

Read this! Perfect for Spooktober!

Littens could I get your opinions please?

Those who buy and read ebooks a lot which company do you buy from and why? (Amazon, B&N, Kobo, etc.)

I‘ve used Amazon Kindle for years and have quite an extensive library but am considering if I should make the switch to another provider. Thoughts?

Thanks! ☺️

AkashaVampie I do Amazon. I have always done Amazon. 5y
Amiable I have purchased e-books from Barnes & Noble for years. I started with that because I had a Nook and the Kindle then didn‘t allow for the e-pub format, which was the format that the library had available for e-books. Plus, I was never happy with Amazon‘s business model in dealing with authors and publishers. And the way they treat their employees. (edited) 5y
Reagan I love my kobo. 5y
See All 11 Comments
Lcsmcat I use all three. I have a larger library on Kindle because I started with them, but I mostly use it for public domain books now. I prefer Kobo for books that I can get that way because I can support my local independent book store, and often use it for books by living authors. I have the nook app because I inherited my mother-in-law‘s Nook, which I have since passed on to my daughter, but have fewer books on it. 5y
amywithbooks I have exclusively used kindle for ebooks, I've never had any complaints! 5y
Hazel2019 I really like shopping at B&N. You go in, are surrounded by books. Just a great place to be. It is more expensive though - especially when purchasing at the physical locations. Amazon would be my second choice. 5y
AmyG I have an ipad where I do everything. I mostly read ebooks from apple and amazon (I have a kindle app on my ipad). 5y
Texreader Amazon Kindle because I like all the freebies 5y
tournevis If you are in the US, Kobo is less interesting because the catalogue is smaller than Amazon. B&N works on Kobo if you sideload, though. In fact, the ability to sideload is Kobo's best, greatest feature. The difference used to be enormous, but now, if you're in the US, it's more about which language you read in. If it's English, Kobo has fewer books in the Kobo store than Amazon. If it's any other language, Kobo it is. 5y
Redwritinghood I buy on Kindle and have no problems with it. I haven‘t used the others, though, so I can‘t compare. 5y
TheLibrarian I‘ve only used Amazon for my Kindle but I love it. With the decline in B&N, I was worried what would happen to my ebooks if I had their ereader. 5y

Lots of potential but it just fell kind of short for me. A good story and a very interesting premise (1920s Mexico + Mayan mythology + Cinderella story) but the characters and their interactions lacked some depth. The last part of the book was the most interesting. Good read but I wasn‘t blown away.

I AM blown away by that cover though 🤩

I liked this much better than the Book of Etta - it felt a little closer to the original book which is still the best in my opinion. I liked the jumps from different times and POVs in here. And as always I enjoyed the diary style of writing. We got more world building and saw how other communities live in this post apocalyptic world too - for better and worse.

shejustlovesbooks I agree! I am almost done with this and I am enjoying it much more than The Book of Etta! I like seeing the what is happening in the world and I felt like we got this with Book of Flora. 5y

Like many of us here in America, Lyz Lenz attempts to understand the great divide that grows wider and wider between Americans in the wake of the 2016 election. Lenz specifically looks at this issue in Middle American Christian communities. There are no answers here but Lenz voices our feelings, our anger, and our hurt, while trying to sort out the cognitive dissonance that takes place in so many Christian communities today. 👇🏻

underthebelljar The only issue I had was each chapter felt like it‘s own distinct piece and that maybe the book was created as a compilation of her essays/articles which made some parts slightly repetitive. It‘s a minor issue though and I thoroughly enjoyed this book and her writing. I highlighted a lot! 5y

Well that was disturbing.

Like most short story collections, some of these weren‘t great and others will be lingering with me for a while. And some, specifically the last story, was a little too disturbing. Sometimes I wish I could erase images from my brain 😬

Overall, creepy stories with some pretty good Stephen King-esque writing.

Well that was interesting. Starts out kind of funny and somewhat light hearted then gets progressively heavier and heavier. I‘m not sure what to think of the ending...but it was an interesting exploration of what could happen should we find the “cure” for aging.

Along with The Lathe of Heaven and Parable of the Sower, I‘m on a roll of reading books dealing with human overpopulation.
