This novel has been so hilarious to me. I love Catherine, “the heroine” so far. I have been absent from Litsy, reading all the volumes of “In Search of Lost Time” by Proust. It really was worth it.

#AboutABook
With nine siblings, Catherine Moreland has #ABigFamily albeit apparently a very plain one (but still fine)! 😉
“A family of ten children will be always called a fine family, where there are heads and arms and legs enough for the number; but the Morlands had little other right to the word, for they were in general very plain, and Catherine, for many years of her life, as plain as any.”
Sometimes this book truly hits the spot. To me, Northanger is the most outright funny of Austen's works, and certainly the most overtly satiric. Even though I've read it several times, I still found myself cracking up at the way she affectionately mocks literary convention, style, and characters. I love the early scenes in Bath being kind of a boring let-down, and I love Eleanor's actual Gothic heroine arc happening entirely off the page. 😂
Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

Last book read in Jan was for #authoramonth and it rounded out a solid month of reading! I liked the simplicity bordering on mockery and the thoughts on literature and reading. When you next meet a novel-hater, this book has a quote for you to deploy at them. #52bookclub24 bibliosmia #popsugar24 self-pub
Most enjoyed reads have arrows, & of them Friday Black was my fav. 1984 gets a mustache #iykyk & I appreciate more having read it than reading it
These are my two English editions. Do I need more editions? Of course I NEED more beautiful editions😂The gorgeous hardback😍was from @mabel during a Jane Austen swap. The print came as part of the decoration but I saved it. I think the mug was also from @mabel
Another Jane Austen novel that I enjoyed. Both editions have an introduction that helps to understand the historical events surrounding the novel topic, I liked the characters and plot⬇️
I struggled with this one. Catherine‘s naivety was almost painful. Quite honestly, it put me to sleep every time I picked it up. There was a glimpse of the witty banter that made me fall in love with Emma. I‘m glad Jane Austen continued to hone her craft after this rather rough beginning.
#authoramonth completed at the last possible moment

For today's #hyggehour I realized my new bibbed ski pants are basically a more mobile version of a sleeping bag blanket... With pockets. 🤯 where were these two weeks ago?! They will be making a reappearance next week 😉
In other #hyggehug news, Northanger Abbey is snarky! Good cozy fun.
#midwintersolace
Maybe it was just where my head and heart were this weekend. I started reading with Serial Reader then switched to audio and then went back to SR. I just couldn‘t get into it but I stuck it out. Again, this could be me and the timing of it all.

I never pass up an excuse to read Jane Austen and for this month‘s #authoramonth I revisited the novel that I think I have read the fewest number of times. It deserves better treatment from me because I forget how much this book makes me chuckle. I think Catherine Morland is one of Austen‘s most entertaining heroines.
Leaving my little hygge nest for #hyggehour
Loving the reminder to slow down and be cozy every Sunday with #midwintersolace though I‘m beginning to run out of my stash of Christmas chocolate… i know I‘ve not posted about it much, but I may have to keep this time on Sundays to reset for the week even after the group ends 😘

“No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine.”
#AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville
I think this will be my last Austen for the month. I enjoyed it, but so little time was spent at the Abbey. I just wanted more. #AuthorAMonth
Starting this today for #authoramonth with @Soubhiville and the rest of the #aam -ers Kind of excited as I haven‘t read this one 😊
Ebook is 29 cents. #authoramonth @Soubhiville

To begin perfect happiness at the respective ages of twenty-six and eighteen is to do pretty well; and professing myself moreover convinced that the general‘s unjust interference, so far from being really injurious to their felicity, was perhaps rather conducive to it, by improving their knowledge of each other, and adding strength to their attachment, I leave it to be settled, by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be ❤️
Iris is unamused by my choice to read (with football playing in the background) rather than going to bed early. 😸😸
“Mrs. Allen was one of that numerous class of females, whose society can raise no other emotion than surprise at there being any men in the world who could like them well enough to marry them.” This quote made me laugh out loud!😂 I can always depend on Jane Austin to have savage descriptions of her foolish acting characters. #janeaustin
Listened to this while I was working for the #scarathlonsprint
I've read this before and enjoyed it. It was nice to listen to it even at double speed
Revisited Northanger Abbey this weekend as part of my Austenian August celebrations.
Via audiobook this time, but still followed by a viewing of the 2007 film adaptation.
JJ Feild really is perfect as Henry Tilney.
And Henry Tilley is perfect.

No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine. Her situation in life, the character of her father and mother, her own person and disposition, were all equally against her.

Of course, my favorite book in October was Northanger Abbey…this time rereading it with the #PemberLittens . Austen‘s ode to the gothic novel, told with her style of satire, is charming and fun to read. #12BooksOf2022
It took me too long to finally finish this book. If only I had kept up with the #pemberlittens! This was my least enjoyable Austen read. I do think it was because I was reading too many books at the same time. In the beginning, I was appreciating the humor, but later, nothing was amusing me. Catherine Morland did not capture my fancy, and it all seemed too contrived. I realize it was her first novel. I loved all the promenades in Bath, and fashion.
This is the 4th time I‘ve read this novel. I don‘t know what to say other than that I enjoy it more each time I read it.
I love the heroes more and hate the villains more too.
Now I have to read some of Austen‘s other work again too, since this can‘t be the only book of hers I‘ve read 4 times.
#PemberLittens
Thanks for hosting again @sprainedbrain As always wonderful
This was my first time reading this one and I really enjoyed it! The characters were larger than life and the story was sarcastic and fun. I listened to the audible full cast production which was very good (love Emma Thompson) but it was a bit abridged. Next time I'll have to read the original to get all the full descriptions and conversations.
#Pemberlittens thanks @sprainedbrain for hosting 😊

Read with the #PemberLittens #chapteraday for October, it is maybe my 6th or 7th reread & remains my #3 behind P&P, then Persuasion. I love the humor & romance & Austen‘s most likable/swoonable clergyman, Henry Tilney 💜 Good gothic October fun & a bit surprisingly, it netted me 193 #Scarathlon2022 #ScarathlonWordSearch words for an extra 1930 points for #TeamMonsterMash (132 goods!) 👻
Read for part or all of the below readathons & bingos 😘
Really enjoyed reading this alongside #Pemberlittens A firm favourite of mine, mainly due to the relentless teasing in the rise of gothic fiction. Great characters, irritating villans and minute detailing of the historical period.
I think this was my third reread of Austen‘s satirical nod to the gothic novel. It‘s fun, with some pretty unlikeable characters, and an unsuspecting heroine who finds happiness in the end. Thanks to #PemberLittens for a month of reading!
I believe this is my fourth reading of Northanger, and it‘s still tied (with P&P) for my second favorite Austen. So witty and funny, gently poking fun at gothic novels of her time, filled with characters you can‘t help but love (Catherine, Henry, Eleanor, the Allens) and characters you really can‘t stand (the Thorpes, the other Tilneys). As is always the case with Austen, her characters seem timeless and real.
And, just so romantic.😍
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
#Pemberlittens
Ch 31: Henry & Catherine have to endure a tense, slightly lengthy engagement because the General is a big jerk, but soon Eleanor secures marriage to a wealthy, titled man (whom she also loves—bonus!) & convinces the General to relent. As it‘s also learned that the Morlands aren‘t totally destitute, he gives his consent, & our darling couple are married within a year of first meeting.
I‘m going with ‘reward filial disobedience.‘😉
This was my first time reading Northanger Abbey and I loved it. So funny with great, annoying villains and a perfect hero and heroine. Huge thanks to @sprainedbrain for leading the #pemberlittens read through!
Henry Tilney has regained his place as my favorite Austen hero 😍
…until I reread Emma, probably! 😂
#PemberLittens
Finished our #Pemberlittens read this morning. Northanger is one of my favorite Austens! I‘ll always love Catherine‘s guilelessness, and the villains are deliciously fun to hate! I also love it when #chapteraday reads work out to exactly the length of the month :) #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #Spookoween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #PointsAThon @dieareader @GHABI4ROSES #20in4 @Andrew65

Ch 30: Catherine has been home for two days and has been fairly useless in her melancholy. Her mom has just about had enough, but when she leaves to grab a self-help book for her, she returns to find Henry Tilney has arrived.😍 Henry is full of apologies and gets Catherine alone to profess his love and propose. Turns out freaking Thorpe made the General think Catherine was rich, and when he found out she isn‘t, he was mad. 🤷🏻♀️
#PemberLittens
Ch 29: Poor Catherine has no time to be scared on her long, solitary journey after being put out of Northanger—she‘s too busy being sad at losing Eleanor and Henry. She arrives home to a family happy to have her (and glad she can shift for herself). Everyone is appalled with the General‘s behavior, including Mr. Allen. Mrs. Allen of course feels the same and has thoughts on Bath and her clothes, naturally. Catherine misses Henry!
Just like the last time, I got close to the end and finished the last few chapters. My thoughts during this #reread pretty well matched my previous read. Having read some of the books mentioned and better appreciating the humor than when I first read it several years ago, this book just gets better. Additionally, this version read by Rachel Atkins was great.

Ch 28: The General leaves for a while, and everything is bliss at Northanger. Catherine begins to think she may be overstaying, but Eleanor wants her to stay a lot longer. Henry has to go do his job again, but the girls are having a great time on their own… until the General arrives home in the middle of the night and informs Eleanor that Catherine is to be unceremoniously sent home first thing the next day for no good reason. Wtf!
"His departure gave Catherine the first experimental conviction that a loss may be sometimes a gain." ?? #pemberlittens
#Pemberlittens
Ch 27: After completely ignoring Catherine‘s letters while threw herself at Captain Tilney, Isabella has deigned to write! Only, it‘s clear from her letter she was left by the lesser Tilney and now just needs Catherine to get her back with James. Such a valid, contradictory letter, even Catherine can see through it to Isabella‘s true character, and she‘s decided she‘s quite done with Isabella. Henry approves. 🎉
General Tilney: We‘ll show up when we feel like it—no need to fix a specific time.
Also General Tilney: *fixes a precise date and time*
General Tilney: No special dinner, we don‘t care.
Henry: My father will expect such a special dinner that I need to give my housekeeper five days to prepare.
Catherine: But how can someone say one thing and mean another???
#PemberLittens
#Pemberlittens
Ch 26: A few days have passed and no news on Frederick/Isabella is good news. The general tells Henry that they all will casually visit him sometime when he‘s next home at Woodston, then pinpoints their arrival to the quarter hour. 😂 The visit happens, and Woodston is the best town ever, the parsonage is the best house ever, Henry has lots of dogs and everything is charming. 😍 Catherine is finally catching on to marriage hints!
