Stunningly beautiful book. Loved illustrations & memorabilia. Saved for #JaneAustenThenAndNow. 👍for Presentation. Keeping for that reason & because it was gift from a friend. But👎for commentary. I have THOUGHTS #PemberLittens!

Elizabeth Bennet was joking when she said she fell in love with Darcy on “my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.”

My next comment has Spoilers for Mansfield Park. 👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig We may not completely ostracize a woman who leaves her husband and runs off with another man like Maria Rushworth but don't act like most people these days would think nothing of it. 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig My BIGGEST complaint is
what author calls 'The Complicated Henry Tilney.'

"Northanger Abbey reads as a lighthearted novel, but Henry Tilney doesn't seem to fit, in part because he doesn't come across as lighthearted."

Northanger Abbey is close 2nd to Pride and Prejudice as my favorite Austen. And Henry Tilney is one of my favorite characters. Yes he
has some serious moments but for the most part he is a charming man with a sunny disposition.
1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Author asks if Jane was in a bad mood when she wrote. Jane wrote Northanger Abbey as a very young woman and she was poking fun at Gothic Novels. So many people don't get that it's very tongue in cheek. 👇 1d

Crinoline_Laphroaig Enjoy it without trying to over analyze it. Sometimes the curtains are just blue or in this case Henry Tilney is just a lively young man who falls for a sweet young woman. End of Rant. 1d
TheBookHippie No. Not our Henry. No. 😭😩 We love him. 1d
Deblovestoread My niece, dad and I were discussing JA over Christmas and talking favorites and NA and Henry is her favorite just for the reasons you listed. 1d
Andrea313 Henry not lighthearted?! With a few exceptions, all the man does is poke lighthearted fun at everything and everyone. I have to admit, I'm curious to read the author's view even though I think I'd adamantly disagree. 1d
bookandbedandtea I don't know how anyone could read NA and come away thinking Henry "isn't lighthearted." 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrea313 it's only few paragraphs long and it made me rant hard. 1d

This afternoon I introduced my grandson to the dot game 🥰 & read Willoughby's Crossroads by Joana Starnes from this anthology for #JaneAustenThenAndNow
Ending just after he meets the Dashwood ladies it offers some possibilities about his experiences & state of mind in the months prior to S&S. It was good. I'm eager to read the other stories but I'll wait to read each story until I reread the original each one goes with. @Crinoline_Laphroaig

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm looking forward to all the stories in this one. 3d

The Prayers of Jane Austen | Jane Austen, Terry Glaspey

A beautiful collection of prayers written by Jane Austen. It also includes a brief bio of her life. The final prayer is my favorite and is one I'll return to. I love her novels so much, it was sweet to see this different side of her writing.

4 Stars • A must have for all avid Austen fans -- This book takes all the best quotes from Jane Austen's works and letters to her sister, Cassandra, and puts them together in one small volume. Subjects include love, life, how people act, and her thoughts on books.

My answers:
1️⃣ Reread. I first read several years ago and have often revisited. When choosing books, I knew was perfect for December. Short stories are wonderful during the busy holiday season. Plus there's something for everyone. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ Continuations and Filling in the Gaps. I don't like when Jane's original stories are tampered with. I prefer the Regency Period but make it different. I feel like Modern Day Retellings are the hardest, especially Pride and Prejudice. A woman isn't going to starve in the hedgerows these days because they didn't get married.

3️⃣ Anne de Bourgh is definitely plotting and or waiting for when she inherits Rosings Park to go absolutely wild. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Mistletoe Mismanagement by Elizabeth Adams. I love seeing Elizabeth and Darcy happy together at Pemberley.

5️⃣ I have 3. Inspiration for book:
"I went up to the Great House between three and four, and dawdled away an hour very comfortably.” Jane wrote in a letter to her sister Cassandra.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig “No, dear, they are coming with us to Rosings. I need all these books if we are to spend a fortnight there,” Elizabeth replied. - By A Lady by Lona Manning

“Really? You can march against Napoleon, but you cannot find a way to talk to a lady in your cousin‘s home? I fear for England!” Mistletoe Mismanagement by Elizabeth Adams

6️⃣ Lady Catherine. At least could escape and walk the gardens of Rosing.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣. I love that these stories edited by
have proceeds benefiting Chawton Great House. The former home of Jane Austen's brother Edward and is now the Centre for the Study of Early Women's Writing. Just a short walk from Chawton Cottage a place Jane often visited.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig And that's a wrap on 2024! Join me in January for #JaneAustenThenAndNow Book Club celebrating the 250th Anniversary of Jane Austen's Birth when we read Sensibility and Sensibility. I'll be back later with more details.

julieclair 1️⃣ First read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I listened on audio while in the car, and the short story format was perfect. 2mo
julieclair 2️⃣ Continuations and Filling in the gaps, for the same reason you stated. Jane‘s original stories are sacrosanct. I do enjoy modern settings, though. 2mo
julieclair I didn‘t really have a favorite story - I enjoyed them all. And I didn‘t write down any favorite quotes because I was driving, but I remember laughing out loud at the Napoleon quote you referenced above! 😂 2mo
julieclair 6️⃣ Mrs. Bennet for sure. I have known several people in my life just like her, and have learned to tune them out! 🙉😂 2mo
julieclair 7️⃣ I agree… I love that the proceeds benefit Chawton Great House. I actually plan to purchase a physical copy because of that. 2mo
julieclair What a fun reading year we have had together! Thanks for hosting, and picking such great books. I‘m excited for #JaneAustenThenAndNow ! 💙😃💙 2mo
julieclair @mcctrish (correcting the spelling in the tag list above) 😘 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair so much fun! And this was great one to end 2024 on 2mo

Yule tradition! I used to have an elaborate setup for burning new year wishes, and alas it was lost in the move SO. This year I got a free candle from work and my boyf‘s wish burned to the bottom of the candle in record time lol. Happy Yule to all that celebrate!
