Possessions | Sara Flannery Murphy
"I was totally immersed in the strange, beautiful world of Sara Flannery Murphy's The Possessions. A gripping, chilling read that's part love story, part mystery, and completely original, it's sensuous, scary, and utterly thrilling. I've never read anything quite like it." --Anton DiSclafani, author of The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls"An enthralling meditation on grief and memory cloaked in suspenseful psychodrama, The Possessions dissolves the boundaries of past and present and artfully, heartbreakingly maps the consequences of transgressive desire. Sara Flannery Murphy has written the best kind of ghost story." --Robin Wasserman, author of Girls on FireIn this electrifying literary debut, a young woman who channels the dead for a living crosses a dangerous line when she falls in love with one of her clients, whose wife died under mysterious circumstances. In an unnamed city, Eurydice works for the Elysian Society, a private service that allows grieving clients to reconnect with lost loved ones. She and her fellow workers, known as "bodies," wear the discarded belongings of the dead and swallow pills called lotuses to summon their spirits--numbing their own minds and losing themselves in the process. Edie has been a body at the Elysian Society for five years, an unusual record. Her success is the result of careful detachment: she seeks refuge in the lotuses' anesthetic effects and distances herself from making personal connections with her clients. But when Edie channels Sylvia, the dead wife of recent widower Patrick Braddock, she becomes obsessed with the glamorous couple. Despite the murky circumstances surrounding Sylvia's drowning, Edie breaks her own rules and pursues Patrick, moving deeper into his life and summoning Sylvia outside the Elysian Society's walls. After years of hiding beneath the lotuses' dulling effect, Edie discovers that the lines between her own desires and those of Sylvia have begun to blur, and takes increasing risks to keep Patrick within her grasp. Suddenly, she finds her quiet life unraveling as she grapples not only with Sylvia's growing influence and the questions surrounding her death, but with her own long-buried secrets. A tale of desire and obsession, deceit and dark secrets that defies easy categorization, The Possessions is a seductive, absorbing page-turner that builds to a shattering, unforgettable conclusion.

This is a good but weird novel about a woman whose job it is to channel dead loved ones. Rather predictably she falls for one of the clients and it doesn't go well 💄

I read this in 2017 and enjoyed it then. But only the main concept that the book is built on stuck in my head (The main character works as a “body” channeling the souls of deceased loved ones). I had forgotten where I‘d read that concept, and thought of it as a short story I‘d read. Tracked this down and reread (actually DNF 70%). I went into it, this time, hoping for speculative literary fiction, but it‘s definitely more of a thriller. Oh well.

Megabooks I agree! I enjoyed it in 2017, but then I picked it up last year and rethought my review. I read the audiobook both times. The narrator is fine; it‘s just that it would be better as speculative. 4y

Edie works as a body channeling the deceased for loved ones. But what happens when she gets too attached to one of her clients and the boundaries gets blurred?
I really enjoyed the writing style of this novel and was intrigued by the premise, but I feel like it lost its way at the end.
Also I cheated and read my #doublespin book first 🙈

Now that I know Dollar Tree sells decent hardcovers, I'm not not going to look at the selection while I'm there. 😆 The cover of this one caught my eye, and the blurb was intriguing enough to convince me to buy. It looks like reviews here are mixed, but I don't feel bad about spending $1 on a potentially so-so book.

Megabooks I enjoyed this one! 5y

Edie works for the Elysian Society as a “body” to channel deceased loved ones for her clients. An intriguing client, a disturbing murder, and Edie‘s own past add to the mystery of her story, and though the pacing felt off at times, I couldn‘t help staying interested until the very end.

+10 for a mystery

"And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear"

It might be a bit of an obvious choice with the title, but this is the first book I thought of for #Possession. I love the cover. Although many didn't like this book & I didn't love it, I did appreciate the unique premise & its bleak beauty & somewhat dystopian vibe.??

#SeptemberDanes I know nothing about this book other than it was a #BOTM choice awhile ago and it features some serious lips on the cover💋I‘m guessing there may be #LipstickLies going on??? Im thinking @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola @L_auren all read it as part of their #BOTMchallenge ??!!? Did you like it?? Also what happened to Meg??? I can‘t find her handle???

BarbaraBB She changed her handle to @Megabooks and those are some lips indeed 💋 6y

Cinfhen I haven't worn a deep fushia in a few decades @Velvetfur ?I'm all about those "mature" nudes ??? 6y
Megabooks I think I was the only one who liked this. And I think it was because I did the audiobook. It was really haunting. @Reviewsbylola @L_auren @emilyhaldi am I right ladies? 6y
Megabooks Thank you @Cinfhen ! I love my new handle despite the confusion. @LauraBeth had a novel idea: she looked up #Cheerwine 😁😁😁😁🥤 6y
Reviewsbylola I should have given it another shot. @Megabooks I tried it towards the end of the challenge when I had a backlog of books I didn‘t really have any desire to read. 6y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I‘m embarrassed to admit this, but I still haven‘t read The English Wife. This just hasn‘t been my year. I‘ve been sick, I‘ve left my job, I‘ve moved in with my parents, etc. etc. 6y
emilyhaldi This one was totally "meh" for me @Megabooks @Cinfhen It echoed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which I loved) but just a little hokier in my opinion???‍♀️ 6y
Cinfhen We ALL skimmed/skipped/fake-read some #BOTM titles @Reviewsbylola @Megabooks there were a bunch of duds in those selections 🙄😂it‘s AMAZING how many #BOTM books you all managed to read!!! Did you cancel your subscription, too @Megabooks ??? I know @emilyhaldi & Steph did. 6y
Megabooks Yes, I did cancel a couple of months ago. The selections got so hokey and the physical books got so cheap. I miss the bookmail though. Right now, my only book subscription is Audible. 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘m sorry this year has been so terrible. ☹️ @Megabooks Don‘t feel bad! I would donate it if I were you because you don‘t need that kind of negativity staring at you from your bookshelf! And TBF, you‘re not missing much. The book was ok but nothing I would write home about. 6y
Reviewsbylola Luckily the selections didn‘t start to go downhill until the final months of 2017. I would have failed at the challenge completely this year!!! 6y
Cinfhen You were always more of an #audio #NF girl @Megabooks so I‘m glad u stuck with Audible 💕I need some good NF recs 6y
Megabooks The hype is real about Dopesick and Bad Blood (the Theranos story). On the funny side I enjoyed both The Last Black Unicorn and I Can‘t Make This Up. I‘ve been branching out and listening to some fiction too. Plus I‘ve been listening to some old favorites too because I‘ve been listening with my dad commuting between drs appts. 6y
Cinfhen Thanks for the recs @Megabooks I've added them all 💕💕💕 6y
L_auren @Cinfhen @emilyhaldi @Megabooks Hiii! I liked this one too! I wouldn‘t sing it from the rooftops but it was unique and I appreciated it 6y
Megabooks @L_auren Exactly. I felt it was one of the more unique selections from that year. 6y
Cinfhen I think this was a @Liberty pick !?!?!! Maybe I need to request it from library @Megabooks @L_auren 6y

A story about channeling the dead should be edgier, sexier, frenetic. This is not. It‘s clinical & quiet.
Yet therein lies its strength. There is a palpable hush over this book. It‘s a testament to the writer‘s ability to create a mood. I can hear muffled footsteps on deep carpets; doors closed with care; the space between each exchange in conversations.
I kept reading for the moment the calm shattered. Alas, it never happened.

The employees at the Elysian Society live in some kind of #virtualinsanity where they can channel dead souls through their own bodies by swallowing “lotus” pills and wearing a belonging of the dead. People come into the Society looking to reconnect with loved ones, but sometimes speaking to the dead through someone else can begin to blur the lines of reality... and sometimes drive people insane.

This book was a roller coaster of sorts for me. At first I was so struck by the idea that it sucked me in. The writing is beautiful and full of atmosphere, but sometimes it seemed almost too much. There were a few times when I wasn't sure what was going on and it was kind of disorienting. In the middle the pace picked up and it regained my interest. Overall, a pick, but I would have made some changes for sure.

Sorry for all the posts tonight! 🙈

Anyone who has read this winter #BOTM choice might recognize one of the signature elements: the lotuses that allowed the bodies to do their work.

Well, now I've found how you can get your own lotus on the interwebs! From the ingredients, you'll definitely get relaxed. As far as lucid dreaming, 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Just started this audiobook today. While it isn't my genre of choice it's holding my attention very well. The author is very good with descriptions. At one point the lead character looks at herself in a bathtub faucet and says " my mouth looks like a black smear across my face " ( paraphrase) It reminded me of The Ring ?

Most of this book was a solid pick, but I didn't like the ending, so it killed it for me. There's a reveal near the end which is supposed to be major and it just fell flat. I loved the tone--very detached, which really fit the story. Lots of potential--I look forward to what she does next.

I just noticed the dog-nibbled edge of the couch is showing here. Greta would like it clearly stated that her brother did that.

ItsAnotherJen I liked the ending but I would like to see how life is for her in 5 years, then 10 years. 8y

Betty_Bookworm I just read this but I can't remember the end. Hahaha. 8y
RealBooks4ever Good doggie, Greta! 💜 8y
Hooked_on_books @Booksandcooks I like that she independently restarted a new center in her own way. I was annoyed by the build-up to this big "reveal" about her past turning out to be mental health issues. I figured she'd murdered multiple people, yet her "crime" was suffering from depression. It just didn't work for me. 8y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books Yeah, I thought she also had this weird supernatural power that she couldn't kill herself. I think the reveal was more she tried to commit suicide while pregnant. That is pretty bad. I can see why he'd be upset, but you think he'd show more sympathy. Also, she pursues him because their knees touch and he's nice to her? I thought that was the most lame part. I still liked the book though. 8y

#bookhaul #libraryhaul #libraryholds #dogsoflitsy

A few library holds came in today. Will I finish all of them them before they're due? Probably not. But they're fun to look at! All are #blameitonlitsy because you #littens are a bunch of enablers. I don't know much about any of these, which is exciting!
