Beside the religious aspect of the book, I liked the book. It was touching and sad. A good book for teenagers or a bookclub.

Let me begin by saying I really appreciated this story being told. It‘s a perspective that I‘ve never seen in a graphic narrative, that of a boy growing into young adulthood and navigating his faith, all while dealing with abuse, bullying, and essentially a rather traumatic childhood. It‘s a vital story, however painful it is at times, one that I can see a lot of people connecting with, particularly those navigating their own conflict of faith. ⬇️
Blankets was banned in all Utah K-12 schools in August, 2024. I feel so strongly about intellectual freedom that I'm going to share some very personal insights. Warning: tough topics ahead.

A hard hitting graphic novel.

An autobiographical graphic novel by Craig Thompson. Craig shares his story growing up in central Wisconsin, his first love, and Catholic upbringing as well as his struggles with his faith and identity. Beautiful story and amazing art ❤️
#Booked2023 ~Quiet YA book
@Mitch I'm in need of my blanket as it's very cold in Dorset - Jaffa has other ideas! I'm not going to stroke him though as he dribbles, and I don't want it on there! 😂

This was a beautiful and sad graphic novel. About brotherhood and young love. 4.5⭐️

Catching up on my #bookspin reviews, this was August. A story about first love and exploring faith. The artwork added to the story and made his angst palpable.
Starting my gigantic, heavy #bookspin pick for August. I‘m going to need a support system to hold it.
Forgot to post my #bookspin & #doublespin. Didn‘t take either of these with me on vacation, but I am looking forward to them when I get home!
I‘m usually not one to read graphic novels, however I felt that Blankets was not only beautifully illustrated but an interesting and moving peek into a life. It was a quick read and brought up memories of the times in my life Craig writes about, like first loves and childhood struggles. I‘d highly recommend it.
Well that was disgusting. Stopped halfway through because I don‘t need to see that many cartoon penises. Seriously.
This graphic novel by Craig Thompson was good. It displays relationship with family, trying to escape from reality, abuse, falling in love, & understanding faith. The most important part for me was how he goes back and forth with his religion-Christianity. However, I‘m not a Christian but coming from a Muslim family background and asking questions about faith but some pieces just not fitting in personally is something I relate to.
So I really enjoyed this graphic novel, but was a bit disappointed that all that time spent together that the main charters didnt find their way back together in the end.
And I found it entertaining that the dad couldn't figure out that hai daughter was vegetarian.

For a boom published in 2015 I am surprised they have old fashioned cassette tapes. I love it. It reminds ss me of being a child.
This picture made me laugh. He looks like he has a man bun.

Some options on my tbr list of graphic novels. Have any of you read any of them? I am leaning towards Blankets, but it is bit on the long side at 500 pages.
Thompson's feelings of intense, obsessive guilt and shame around never being able to live up to perfect Christian faith and goodness brought me back to being wracked with those same feelings. He really poignantly captures the ways in which people who love each other push each other away despite desperately craving connection. The artwork is beautiful, and Thompson is so vulnerable and open about his experiences. Content warning: child abuse.
I hope everyone's holding up okay! I know the situation these past few months have taken a toll on my mental health and my reading life but a YA graphic novel was exactly what I needed to get myself out of the reading slump I was in. This is a great look at faith, family relations and first love (from the guy's perspective!) with outstanding illustrations that use magical realist at times to better convey our protagonist's memories and feelings.
Mourning the loss of a moment before the moment is even gone is one of the easiest ways to miss the moment altogether. 💜
I'm suuuuper homesick lately, and for the first time in a long time there is no clear light at the end of the tunnel of not being able to travel back to my hometown. The promise of a freak May snowstorm back home makes all of that homesickness much sharper. I miss snow something awful. The magical reverence, the alive silence, the eerie brightness in the dark of night. ✨
My heart breaks for innocent kids wracked with guilt in oppressive religious communities. I was that kid. Hell, sometimes I still am. I really appreciate Thompson's unflinching honesty. ❤
Blankets may have been the first graphic novel I ever purchased, long before I ever actually sat down and read a graphic novel. The receipt was still in there, showing I purchased it from #TribeComics on 10/17/16. I'm finally making the time for it, and I'm grateful to Past Casey for picking it up long before she ever could have imagined she would one day be hunkering down at home to flatten a coronacurve. 💙
Read this with this guy but he was more interested in decorating the tree #graphicnovel story wove so many threads of memory into a narrative full of rich shadows and luminous moments of clarity and love I was transported

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 I read this one awhile ago and I did enjoy the story and beautiful artwork but over all I think this coming of age story would have better suited my younger angsty self.
We have blankets stashed all over the house to snuggle under while reading with three up in the loft where I read the most!

Difficult for me to review because I was able to find a path to faith from a similar experience & Craig was not. I think it does accurately depict fundamentalism & while I share similar beliefs, I‘ve also embraced room for questioning, critical thinking, & differences that I hope gives my kids freedom of choice (that God gives us) rather than forced belief. I felt sad for Craig at the end. Others who read this may have a different experience.
I really enjoyed this book. It hit a personal note for me as it was about the author's struggle with his Christian upbringing. I was raised in the church so I could really empathize with his struggles.
#Blankets #CraigThompson
Before Blankets, I‘d yet to read a book that so accurately captured the feelings of my childhood. It was a bit unsettling. But, it made me feel a little less alone in the world. The only criticism that I have is that the ending was a bit flat.

Wooooow ❤️
This was beautiful. A coming of age story, with dark twists and secrets, sibling rivalry, faith and first loves. Just stunning 👌
A beautiful graphic novel about the childhood and teenage years of Craig Thompson. The beautiful illustrations transported me into the Wisconsin winter. Perfect reading experience!

A winter scene to help cool things down. 😁
Young love, coming of age, becoming who you want to be...Blankets has always struck a chord with me. I can relate with the whole 'growing up in a religious family and not agreeing with it' bit.
Anyways. Kissy kissy. 😘
Fantastic story. ❤️
