Gerald's Game
Gerald's Game | Stephen King
When a game of seduction between a husband and wife ends in death, the nightmare has only just begun in this sinister twist on a bedtime storya #1 national bestseller and one of Stephen Kings best (USA TODAY).Gerald and Jessie Burlingame have gone to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic getaway. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband's games, but when Gerald refuses to stop, the evening ends with deadly consequences. Still handcuffed, Jessie is trapped and alone. Over the next twenty-eight hours, in the lakeside house that has become a prison, Jessie will come face-to-face with all the things she has ever feared. Her only company is a hungry, stray dog and the various voices that fill her mind. As night comes, she is unsure whether it is her imagination or if she has another companion: someone watching her from the corner of her dark bedroom. A master of his craft, Stephen Kings novels haunt in many different ways. Geralds Game kept us up half the night, we couldnt put it down (Newsweek).

I gave it the good ole college try… but when the thought that you only have so many audiobook hours and this is wasting them… there‘s no going back. As per my usual feelings with King… this just dragged on too long.

I know it‘s also an old book but there should also be trigger warnings… because it‘s almost vulgar detail. The audio also had weird chime noises that would happen mid sentence… it just got annoying.

Another spooky fail.

I don‘t do well with a lot of King, but I‘ve seen the movie and this type of horror seems more in line with my interests.

Also despite having the tangible book, this will be partially on Spotify audiobooks.

This book was definitely worth reading even after seeing the movie. There is a lot of detail and it is such a psychological experience of what goes through Jessie‘s mind while she is trapped with no way out and the thoughts of survival and fear that she goes through. Even though I knew how it would end, I was still in suspense through the whole book. Definitely a book that will stay with me.

Starting this one now, excited to give it a try!

I love Stephen King, but usually find I either adore a book (5 stars) or find it ok (3 stars) Hopefully this is the former! 🤣

Four hours later, and I‘ve finally gone through all my books. After reading their synopsis I have a stack of 116 books that I‘m not 100% sold on keeping. I‘m going to “taste test” them all to see if I‘m keeping them or donating them, starting with these 16. They should all be quick reads, so let‘s see how many I can get through before the end of the month & my reading goes back to a planned TBR. Fingers crossed they‘re not all DNFs. 🤞🏻

Tea_and_Starstuff What an intense project! Good luck, and I hope you find some gems 2y
KathyWheeler While it‘s not my favorite King book, I did end up liking Gerald‘s Game. 2y

On its face, this is a fairly self-contained psychological thriller about a woman handcuffed to a bed and her efforts to free herself. In a larger sense, the thesis of Gerald's Game concerns the myriad ways women in our patriarchal society are encouraged to minimize themselves for the sake of men, the lingering impact of sexual violence, and what it is like to exist as a woman in a culture designed to silence them. A grisly, uncomfortable 5/5.

It‘s evident that Kings writing style differs with this book; it‘s similar in storyline to Misery - one of my favourite King books. However, this felt mediocre. It did pick up towards the end.

One of the gorier King books I‘ve read; my black heart really enjoyed those parts though. He also writes his female characters unerringly accurate, just as good as if a female author wrote the book.

This book felt tedious to me. I enjoyed a lot of the story and quite a few of the scenes. Since most of the torture our main character suffered was in her mind, it didn't have as much excitement and action as other Stephen King novels. Still a good story though! It had some disgusting actually scary scenes. Can be triggering for sexual abuse survivors.

Starts off with a bang and then gets weird. It falls off a bit after a defining moment in the book, making it slower paced. I didn‘t hate it, but it was by far not my favorite of his books. Maybe it‘ll translate better visually when my husband and I watch it for one of my #Scarathon movie picks.

I just met my #20in4 goal by finishing this book. I was pretty disappointed by the story. I feel like it could have been about 200 pages shorter, or maybe even a novella. The last 100 pages were the strongest. I‘m used to loving King, not always the endings, but at least the stories, so I‘m kind of bummed.

It‘s been years since I‘ve read this one, and I‘ve been mentally preparing myself for the degloving scene... but I forgot that before that, Jessie wants to cut herself to lubricate herself out of the handcuffs.

I‘m not sure I can read that. Any description or enactment of self-harm in this vein (no pun intended) causes a visceral reaction in me. I‘m talking grayed vision, flushed skin, could faint if I continue.

MySharonaK @dariazeoli yes this book belongs in the freezer ! For quite a few bits that keep coming back to me even though it‘s been years. I also really related as I‘m also feeling awful when reading stuff like that, feeling weak and queasy and like I can‘t stand or I‘ll faint 4y
dariazeoli @MySharonaK I‘m glad and sorry that you can relate 😆 I considered DNFing, but I quickly skimmed the queasy scene and I‘m now closing in on the finish line. But I think it‘ll be awhile before another reread of this one! 4y

Trying to get one Stephen King in a month. Not sure I can pull it off all year though. What are his best books?

RvnclawWhovian I feel like a broken record lol but if you haven‘t read 11/22/63, you must ASAP. It‘s a bit of a chunker but I ended up wishing it would never end 6y
TheBookgeekFrau I agree with @RvnclawWhovian 11/22/63 was really good. I also loved Tommyknockers, The Outsider, The Dark Tower series, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams to name a few 6y
amberdfoy Ok thanks! I‘ve read The Outsider and the Bill Hodges trilogy. I recently got The Shining just because I want to read the one about the son. I haven‘t read Stephen King in 10+ years so I‘ve only read the really popular, not so long ones when I was a teenager. 6y

I wanted to read this because it is loosely tied to Dolores Claiborne. Jessie and her husband head to a secluded cabin for adult fun. Things don‘t go as planned and Jessie ends up handcuffed to the bed and alone. Her time is spent between flashbacks and conversations with the voices in her head. Her determination and will are remarkable. Her situation is terrifying. This one has plenty of triggers.

Prairiegirl_reading I remember this book from when it first came out. I couldn‘t put it down. I kept thinking how is a story about a woman handcuffed to a bed so compelling!!?? 6y
Victoriahoperose I watched this movie without knowing anything about it and it still gives me nightmares 6y
