Pickpick

What‘s better than an art heist caper? A middlebrow art heist caper!

I‘m going to echo what the rest of you have already said in your reviews of this #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub pick; it was a thoroughly enjoyable and delightfully suspenseful read (and I enjoyed it even more than the last one we read by this author).

What do you all think of the illustration of the trunk on the cover of my edition? I can see several items that were mentioned! 😆

catebutler Love your vintage edition Leah! I‘m about half way through and really enjoying it! So happy this one was picked! 🩷 8mo
jlhammar Absolutely love that cover!! Delightfully suspenseful indeed. And what a great ending 😆 8mo

quietjenn Love the cover. Everyone just forgets about the broken vase and the manuscript 😅 I like this one better too and am insanely curious about her others, which sounds totally different. 8mo
Ruthiella Love that cover! 😍 I remember liking My Caravaggio but maybe because the main character was so annoying, I like this one better? 8mo
batsy That's a fantastic cover! Suits the book so well. I preferred this to My Caravaggio, as well. 8mo

I read 12 books in May (one book was the #CBBC reading and I don‘t own that book).
Only one bingo but I read #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin books I read more books in the free spaces😂
No bingo in the #ISpyBingo May @TheAromaOfBooks @Clwojick

Two books were not completed. I will try to finish them during this month. They are:
The Splendid and the Vile #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville
Clothes-Pegs #FurrowedMiddlebrow @LeahBergen

LeahBergen What a good month! Did you not like Clothes-Pegs? 12mo
Gissy @LeahBergen I‘m enjoying it but I couldn‘t finish it because it was a busy month, where we have to sacrifice our reading time☹️Today is June 5th and I haven‘t read much either😩 12mo
Clwojick Good job! 12mo
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Fantastic month!!! 12mo

My final 😔 Book Depository order arrived a few days ago. I believe the tagged was a previous #Furrowedmiddlebrow group pick. The other I chose mainly for the cover, although I do love E.M. Delafield. #buybuyBookDepository
And the bookmarks are adorable!

Cathythoughts Lovely books 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 we‘ll miss Book D. 🙁 12mo

Summer Pudding | Susan Scarlett

I read the #FurrowedMiddlebrow edition, but I must confess to preferring the Greyladies cover.

A very enjoyable read right until the end, which 1) had several worrying loose ends and 2) had no payoff at all for the MMC being unfair to the FMC, aside from the requisite HEA. Romance readers beware! There's also somewhat less interesting period detail than in the other Scarlett books.

WW2 has ended, and everyone‘s returning home, but neither home nor they themselves remain the same. I have a thing for WW2 British homefront books, so this was a interesting read for me. Being a (now retired) military spouse, I found the discussions of nostalgia & pride in wartime units relatable -there‘s something about surviving a stressful/challenging time together that creates a bond that outsiders just can‘t be part of.
#FurrowedMiddlebrow ⬇️

Aimeesue (2)It was thrilling to see it depicted here, because those of us who went through it in recent times don‘t often see it depicted in fiction. As depicted here, coming out the other side of war zone deployments, family separations, PTSD and re-aclimation to the civilian world can be jarring, and happens in fits and starts, as Beauchamp demonstrated beautifully here. Spot on, so I may even read this one again. (edited) 14mo
batsy Great review, and great to see it from your perspective. Yes, I think the reacclimation "in fits and starts" as you say, is the thing that struck me the most reading this. 14mo

Aimeesue @batsy I don‘t know how it is when you actually deploy to a war zone together, but being the spouses of the deployed is an incredibly bonding experience these days. Despite all kinds of social differences, the people who supported me while our spouses were deployed together will ALWAYS be my people. (edited) 14mo
jlhammar Wonderful review! It felt very authentic to me. Glad it resonated with you. I really appreciated the focus on the challenging adjustment period for the returning men and women and their families. Not something I‘ve read much about. And lovely floral background in your collage! 14mo
Ruthiella That‘s so cool that you have this extra lens to read this with. Isn‘t amazing how one can connect across time via books like this? Glad you liked it. (edited) 14mo
LeahBergen What a great review! I liked it for the very reasons you did and I‘m not even a military spouse. 😆 It was such an interesting take on the WW2 novel. 14mo
Cathythoughts Great review 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻and I love your picture. 14mo
Suet624 Hmmm…with your review and the comments of all those who enjoyed the book, it seems I‘ll have to read it! 14mo
Aimeesue @jlhammar i just googled "1940s wallpaper" and picked from the prettiest! ? 14mo
Aimeesue @Ruthiella It‘s an interesting connection for sure. Probably why I‘m so drawn to British homefront stories - I can really relate. 14mo
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I really enjoyed it! 14mo
Aimeesue @Cathythoughts Thanks! It‘s a 1940s wallpaper design! 14mo
Aimeesue @Suet624 There are some annoying characters and situations for sure, but I really did enjoy these aspects. Hope you enjoy it if you decide to read it! (edited) 14mo

Someone else may have already posted this news, but Rupert Heath, founder of Dean Street Press, has passed away.

There‘s more about him, and the future of #FurrowedMiddlebrow books, on the FM blog:

http://furrowedmiddlebrow.blogspot.com/2023/03/the-ides-of-march.html

I emailed Rupert about a Susan Scarlett ARC, and he couldn‘t have been nicer and more patient in figuring out the right format for me.

jlhammar Oh, how sad. And no more FM reprints to come 😪 1y
LeahBergen I‘m glad you posted this as I was just about to do it! It‘s so very sad. There will be no more Furrowed Middlebrow books to come but our little club can still work through the 96 that have been printed. I‘ll tag the rest of our club to make sure we all see this: @catebutler @elkeOriginal @erzascarletbookgasm @quietjenn @CarolynM @Cathythoughts @batsy @Kimzey @Jess_Read_This 1y
CarolynM Thanks for posting @rubyslippersreads and thanks for tagging everyone @LeahBergen I was so sad when I heard the news, first about Amanda and then Rupert. DSP must be a thriving little business. Maybe someone will want to fold it into their little publishing house in due time. We can only hope. 1y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Yes, I‘m hoping for something like that, too. 😢 1y
rubyslippersreads @CarolynM @LeahBergen I hope that will happen too. 1y
batsy Oh no, that is so sad. 54 is way too young. 😞 I'm not sure if he was the one tweeting under the FM account or if he occasionally did but I got the impression of an incredibly nice and approachable person. @CarolynM I hope that it's a possibility. DSP was such a lovely idea and it'll be such a loss without more reprints. 1y
CarolynM @batsy The FM account is Scott Thompson who wrote the tagged blog post. He's the force behind the FM imprint while Rupert was the publisher. 1y
batsy @CarolynM Ah, OK! Thank you for clearing that up. 1y
Kimzey How terribly sad! Thank you for letting us know. 😢 1y
Cathythoughts So sad. Yes 54 is way too young @batsy. I‘m so glad we are all part of FM and will have read the 96 books @LeahBergen It will be a poignant reading experience now. I hope DSP will continue somehow @CarolynM 1y
Jess_Read_This It‘s a such a tragedy. I also read Scott‘s post just now that there will be no more Furrowed Middlebrow reprints. 😕 I‘m glad our group will continue reading together though! Thank you for tagging me @LeahBergen 1y
erzascarletbookgasm Sad news indeed. Thanks for tagging the FM gang @LeahBergen . I‘m glad to be part of FM club too @Cathythoughts 1y
