Begin Again | Ursula Orange

Oxford, it appeared, if it did not seem to have fitted her for any precise occupation, had at least unfitted her for a great many things. In her charming and incisive debut novel, Ursula Orange focuses her sharp eye on four young women only recently down from Oxford. Jane and Florence live in London, working at office jobs, the latter channelling her excess energy into a dreadfully earnest novel of her own. Sylvia remains at home, shocking her family with theories of sexual and social liberation. And Leslie, as the novel opens, idealizes the other three, as she tries to convince her mother to let her use her small nest egg to attend art school in London. As the four friends balance their youthful ideals with the realities of work and romance in 1930s England, Orange offers hilarious and thoughtful perspectives on the quandaries of educated, ambitious women in a world not yet ready for them. This new edition includes an introduction by Stacy Marking. "a charming and deftly written book" Sunday Times "The fresh quality and genuine youthfulness of this story are as charming in fiction as in life." Times Literary Supplement "an unusually good first novel, in a decade of unusually good first novels." Daily Telegraph

My final 😔 Book Depository order arrived a few days ago. I believe the tagged was a previous #Furrowedmiddlebrow group pick. The other I chose mainly for the cover, although I do love E.M. Delafield. #buybuyBookDepository

This story of 4 young women in England between the wars is totally charming. While many of the issues raised were only relevant to the affluent middle class, I really enjoyed the way it illustrated the difficulties women faced in reconciling their desire for independence and the "new morality" with the practicalities of living in the society of the time. Thanks again @LeahBergen for gifting me this book. I am going to seek out more Ursula Orange.

CarolynM #bookspinbonanza book 12 @TheAromaofBooks I think this will be as far as I get through my list. I'm surprised I managed so many! 4y

erzascarletbookgasm This is such a great cover, love it! 4y
LeahBergen I‘m so glad you enjoyed it. Didn‘t you love the sound of that poor character‘s (I can‘t remember her name) horribly boring novel? 😆 4y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I think you‘ll enjoy this one. 👍🏻 4y
CarolynM @LeahBergen I had a quiet chuckle at Florence's novel - very boring but very modern😂 Given when it was written I couldn't help thinking how sad it was that all those young men were about to go off to war - I hope Claud, at least, came home again. I'd not registered your #furrowedmiddlebrow tag before. I assume you know about his blog - it's so interesting and a great resource. 4y
BarbaraBB It sounds very good and it has written @LeahBergen all over it 😉😘 4y
batsy Sounds like my cup of tea ☺️ Love the combo of your mug and the cover... Pretty! 4y
TheAromaofBooks You made fabulous Bonanza progress!!! 4y
CarolynM @LeahBergen I ordered the other two Ursula Orange books available on Booktopia. Couldn't resist! 4y
LeahBergen I have them, too! They sound good, don‘t they? I DO follow the Furrowed Middlebrow blog and also Simon Thomas from Stuck in a Book. He‘s a good middlebrow blogger, too. He‘s the one who has helped the British Library republish their new Women Writers series and wrote afterwords for them all. I can‘t remember if you saw my post about them? 😆 4y
CarolynM @LeahBergen I probably saw it but forgotten about it😬 I'll have a look at it. Thanks😘 4y
