Pickpick

Silly me meant to take a picture yesterday while we actually had a fire going. Instead, here's our empty fireplace 😂 ANYWAY book 3 + companion for the Chronicle of Ixia. There's a lot going on here as a bunch of threads are wrapped up for the trilogy (the Chronicles consist of three interlocking trilogies, plus a crapton of short stories). It gets intense, but also feels like the pace suddenly slows way, way down right at the end. Still, very ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) engaging and likable characters.

For the #192025 challenge, I gave myself the extra challenge of reading at most one book from any one author. For the new #192030 challenge, I'm going to relax that requirement, but I'm going to try to do the years roughly in order, working on a couple of decades at a time before reading from the next ones. I expect my 1920's and 1930's will be filled with a lot of Golden Age mystery novels!
@Librarybelle

Librarybelle That sounds like a good plan! And, I‘m eyeing my Golden Age mysteries too—I suspect I‘ll be reading a good portion of them the next few years. 3d
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I used some of the Series of Unfortunate Events books because I wanted to read them and pass them along to a friend's son. Other than that, I did try to choose a variety of authors and I think there were a few with two entries. I'll likely do the same for this next round. 2d

The first half of this book dragged a bit, and I agreed with previous reviews I‘ve read. The second half was much better, more horror-like and gruesome, and kept a more fast paced. The ending was a bit of an eye roll, but it‘s still a 4-star read for me. I listened to the audio that features a multicast narration, and I think that made the book more enjoyable. #192030 #2025 #52BookClub26 #CharacterWithASecretIdentity

#FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl #2026Reads

This week my first line comes from 'Antarctica', a collection of short stories by Claire Keegan that was first published in 1999. The first line is from the first story also titled 'Antarctica'.

Every time the happily married woman went away she wondered how it would feel to sleep with another man.“

(1920) Recently widowed Lionel Varrick throws a Christmas get-together for a few friends at his late wife's childhood mansion. Unintended by Varrick, one of his guests is a spiritual medium, and upon her arrival strange things start happening. When the medium holds an impromptu seance the first evening, secrets start leaking ... This old-fashioned gothic thriller is a hoot, and my 1920 read for #192030
