"Three female doctors and friends remind the reader of the heart-wrenching tragedies and impossible choices that make such a cast not only heroic but human."--Kristina McMorris, New York Times bestselling author of Sold on a Monday Hannah, Compton, and Kira have been close friends since medical school, reuniting once a year for a much-needed vacation. Just as they gather to travel in Spain, an outbreak of a fast-spreading virus throws the world into chaos. When Compton Winfield returns to her job as an ER doctor in New York City, she finds a city changed beyond recognition--and a personal loss so gutting it reshapes every aspect of her life. Hannah Geier's career as an ob-gyn in San Diego is fulfilling but she's always longed for a child of her own. After years of trying, Hannah discovers she's expecting a baby just as the disease engulfs her city. Kira Marchand, an infectious disease doctor at the CDC in Atlanta, finds herself at the center of the American response to the terrifying new illness. Her professional battle turns personal when she must decide whether her children will receive an experimental but potentially life-saving treatment. Written prior to Covid-19 by a former emergency medicine physician, Doctors and Friends incorporates unexpected wit, razor-edged poignancy, and a deeply relatable cast of characters who provoke both laughter and tears. Martin provides a unique insider's perspective into the world of medical professionals working to save lives during the most difficult situations of their careers.

Finishing this one up while I wait for my daughter in physical therapy. It‘s in the 50‘s here in Minnesota in January! I have my window down!
It‘s so hard to believe this was written before COVID! Another good one from auldlangspine list I got from @CBee There are so many more of yours I want to read so I will be sprinkling them in all year.

CBee I was also amazed it was written before Covid - she even writes about that in the author‘s notes. I‘m glad you liked this one too 😊👏🏻 9mo

This book, y‘all. Pandemic trigger warnings, so don‘t read if you‘re still fairly traumatized by the Covid pandemic. That being said, I was truly amazed at how well researched, how uncannily similar the pandemic in this book mirrored Covid, at the portrayal of the doctors on the front lines, the life and death choices that nobody ever wants to make. It was EXCELLENT. One of my favorite parts: the (fictional) president was exactly the type of ⬇️

CBee Leader we needed during our own pandemic. Intelligent, compassionate, scientifically minded, well-read, with a HEART. Her determination and insistence, her dogged compassion for the suffering, was extraordinary. Lastly, the friendships in the book are total goals - is it realistic to say that seven friends could be that close and stay in touch? I don‘t know, but I envy it. 1y
CBee Finally! This author knocks my socks off with her research. She knows her stuff and is willing to learn when she doesn‘t know her stuff. IMPECCABLY researched and truly realistic. She mentions three times in her author‘s note (this was published in 2021 but written before Covid), “this is not about Covid” 😂😂 and the best part: “to Covid: fuck you.” I second that. Phew what a ride!!! 1y

Wow wow wow. I read many of these sections out loud to my husband and other family members as I was enamored with the storyline. This book, this pandemic storyline, is relevant and emotional; written and submitted to her publisher before Covid-19 changed our own realities. The varying perspectives is a wonderful way to tell this story and it will stick with me for a very, very long time.

CBee Sounds amazing!!! 2y

I loved this book so much. It‘s hard to believe it was written before the current pandemic began. It rang true. I care about each of these characters and am sad that the book has ended. #Libby #audiobook

As #PandemicLit (written before covid) this was a difficult read. Esp an incident I'll put in a spoiler comment. As an exploration of friendship, motherhood, love, & resilience I loved this. These women were passionate about their medical careers, their marriages, their kids, & their friendships. Following along each of their experiences as they all navigated the pandemic kept me glued to the page. Warning: this is a tearjerker but so good.

bookandbedandtea One of the characters finds herself in a situation of choosing to save one of her children over another. Her anguish over how to decide put me right in her shoes and, as a mother myself, I could scarcely read through my tears. 3y
tpixie @bookandbedandtea yes so tough!!! 2y
bookandbedandtea @tpixie Difficult but good. This will definitely be on my top 10 list for this year. 2y
