Sherlockian
Sherlockian | Graham Moore
Hurtling from present day New York to Victorian London, The Sherlockian weaves the history of Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle into an inspired and entertaining double mystery that proves to be anything but "elementary." In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-adoring Londoners eagerly opened their Strand magazines, anticipating the detective's next adventure, only to find the unthinkable: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had killed their hero off. London spiraled into mourning-crowds sported black armbands in grief-and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin. Then in 1901, just as abruptly as Conan Doyle had "murdered" Holmes in "The Final Problem," he resurrected him. Though the writer kept detailed diaries of his days and work, Conan Doyle never explained this sudden change of heart. After his death, one of his journals from the interim period was discovered to be missing, and in the decades since, has never been found.... Or has it? When literary researcher Harold White is inducted into the preeminent Sherlock Holmes enthusiast society, The Baker Street Irregulars, he never imagines he's about to be thrust onto the hunt for the holy grail of Holmes-ophiles: the missing diary. But when the world's leading Doylean scholar is found murdered in his hotel room, it is Harold-using wisdom and methods gleaned from countless detective stories-who takes up the search, both for the diary and for the killer.

Hello new #BakerStreetIrregulars - unfortunately @CatLass007 and I have decided to end our group after our April discussion - yes, we are still in our infancy but unfortunately I had to consider all of my groups and commitments on Litsy and in life and some things I‘m unable to give the attention they deserve. Thanks to those who have joined us on what we thought was a fun delve into the many mysteries that are out there.

Librarybelle Thanks for hosting this! I know I just joined up, but it‘ll be fun to discuss this month‘s book with you and @CatLass007 ! 6mo
CatLass007 Thanks, @Librarybelle! It‘s a good idea. All the buddy reads are good ideas. There are just so many, something‘s gotta give. I‘m going to continue exploring the topics on my own as time and finances permit. I‘ll miss the discussions, but I know that Littens are so supportive of one another that discussions will continue informally. 6mo

CogsOfEncouragement I‘m really enjoying this first Amelia Peabody story. I had NEVER HEARD of the series. So I thank you for making me aware. I appreciate you making hard decisions about stepping away from good things in order to properly enjoy other good things. Good example to all of us. 💟 6mo
Read4life I‘m sorry to see this end but I‘m struggling with all of the buddy read groups I‘m in and I don‘t even run any of them. Thank you both for the time you put into this. 💙💙 6mo
julieclair Thank you both, @StayCurious and @CatLass007 , for hosting this very fun group. I often feel like a kid in a candy store with Litsy. There are too many fun things to choose from! But we can‘t do everything, and sometimes real life needs our attention. I applaud your search for balance. 💙 6mo
CatLass007 @CogsOfEncouragement @Read4life @julieclair I‘m glad you‘ve enjoyed #BakerStreetIrregulars. I was dimly aware of the Amelia Peabody series but didn‘t know much at all. I‘m enjoying the first book in the series and I‘m happy to share that the first dozen books in the series are free on Audible. I agree that being a Litten is very much like being a kid in a candy store! My Audible wish list is miles long because of Litsy. 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Thank you both so much for hosting - I totally get it on the overcommitments! 😂 @CatLass007 6mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Thank you for hosting your buddy reads. Because of Litsy I‘ve gotten to meet many wonderful people. Was your handle once @barkingmadruns? (edited) 6mo

CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Wow. I really shouldn‘t try to think and/or write anything unless I‘m fully awake. That is exactly who I meant and since your handles are nothing alike, the only possible explanation is that I was sleep typing.😅 6mo

I think if I was a bigger fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, I would have enjoyed this one more. I enjoyed the Conan Doyle story line, but it was hard for me to care that much about Harold. Things were just too easy for him. I am glad I finally read this though. It‘s been on my shelf for almost a decade.

In 2010, a Sherlock mega-fan finds himself in the midst of a murder mystery and a quest to find the missing diary of Arthur Conan Doyle.

In 1900, Doyle must solve a series of bizarre murders when Scotland Yard looks the other way.

The stories intertwine to form a solid novel that never quite figures out if it wants to be light fun or a dark meditation on man‘s evils.

The MVP here is Doyle‘s sidekick, unpublished theatre manager Bram Stoker.

Bradleygirl Nice blurb! I started this over New year's and got distracted; may pick it back up. 6y

“I think I love the idea that problems have solutions. I think that‘s the appeal of mystery stories, whether they‘re Holmes or someone else. In those stories we live in an understandable world. We live in a place where every problem has a solution, and if we were only smart enough, we could figure them out.”

The basis for the mystery and the weaving of past & present, fact & fiction - are really excellently done. Clever. It educates on Conan Doyle, Stoker and their time period without pedantry. Those aspects I enjoyed. But ultimately, I didn't like it. For much of the story I just felt sad, and I finished it feeling that way. Too "real" maybe for a lover of the fictional Sherlock Holmes world?

daf_fields I enjoyed it but I appreciate and respect your perspective on it. 8y

Beginning this on audio, and enjoying it so far. The storyline back and forth from Sir Arthur to present day is well done but tough for me. I get into the time period and scene then have to switch gears for the next segment in the other period and scene.

daf_fields I listened to it, also. Did you finish it? Once I got used to the format/style, I really enjoyed it and found it to be quite well written. 8y
mabell @daf_fields Yes, I finished it on audio. I agree I got used to the format, and I thought the narrator did a great job. 👍 8y

I really enjoyed this, but I'm not sure it would be as great for someone unfamiliar with the Doyle canon. It's historically interesting, alternating between a version of a modern true crime story and a totally fictional story about Arthur Conan Doyle solving a mystery with his friend Bram Stoker. Neither mystery is all that great, but for a Sherlock junkie like me it was fun to be totally immersed in all things Doyle and Holmes for a while.
