When Beauty Tamed the Beast
When Beauty Tamed the Beast | Eloisa James
68 posts | 85 read | 44 to read
Eloisa Jamess writing is absolutely exquisite. New York Times bestselling author Teresa Medeiros Nothing gets me to a bookstore faster than a new novel by Eloisa James. New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn A wonderful spin on a much-beloved fairy tale, Eloisa Jamess When Beauty Tamed the Beast is heart-soaring and fun historical romance at its finest. No wonder People magazine raves about her books, saying, Romance writing does not get much better than this. Eloisas delightful take on Beauty and the Beast unfolds in Regency England, where a beastly, bad-tempered Earl matches wits with a brazen beauty who has vowed to make the handsome grump fall in love with her in two short weeks.

I simply can‘t resist a beauty & the beast inspired tale. This beast is a little bit Rochester and a little bit Dr. Gregory House and it works.

July #BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks book 2 in Eloisa's Fairy Tale series. Inspired by Beauty & Beast but with Dr. House personality☺️Funny, sexy, with clichés, predicted ending but cute. Good book during reading slump if you like historical romances. I had COVID-19 flashbacks, there is an illness outbreak (not spoilers), tx is by constant hands washing, cleaning areas, plenty of fluids. Spreads through coughing and Quarantine was ordered what??3.3⭐️

I needed a straightforward romance to get out of a book slump, and this delivered. It had some really great banter, often filled with Shakespeare references.

Birdsong28 @BarbaraBB I thought it was quite quiet, I looked on the hashtag and it seems there are other people still doing it but they don't use this picture in the post so I have missed it. Birdsong28 @Bookwormjillk I think that is why I haven't seen anyone else posting as I think most people post when they finish the book rather than on 29th of month so I miss the post as when this challenge started everyone posted their pick for that particular month on the 29th. My first bona fide historical romance, and you know what? It was super fun! Kinda ridiculous but a great way to get my mind off my worries. The beginning of this was hilarious and I loved the main characters initial interactions. Once they got together I lost a bit of interest because the funny went away and was replaced by the sex but still all in all the book was a good time.

thevictoriousone Definitely not as much fun when they get together. The best books basically end there. 7y
thevictoriousone Or there‘s some other complication that makes it more fun. I also like one like Victoria Holt because she‘s clean! No sexy bits to distract from the story! 7y
everlocalwest @thevictoriousone But it's a Beauty and the Beast retelling so they have to have the dramatic separation and heroic reconciliation. You might like this one, the Beast character is modeled after Dr. House. Which Victoria Holt do you recommend I start with? 7y
thevictoriousone Ooh that does sound interesting. I‘d recommend my 3 favorites: On the Night of the Seventh Moon, The Pride of the Peacock, or The Silk Vendetta. 7y

“Beautiful girls in fairy stories are as common as pebbles on the beach. Magnolia-skinned milkmaids rub shoulders with starry-eyed princesses and, in fact, counting two eyes in each bright-eyed damsel would result in a whole galaxy of twinkling stars.”

Fun, but I liked the first book I read by her (Potent Pleasures) better. This is my third, and the plots have too much similarity. P.P. was better because I found it more interesting to read so much detail about the lives of the aristocracy and the familial relationships. This one was more generic and predictable. A pick because it was still enjoyable for a vacation read.

This Tuesday 7 pm, Strand Bookstore in NYC! It's a particular challenge to be feminist in writing historical romances. Easy to kick the misogynist to the curb in 2017---not so easy in 1817! Plus readers really love arranged marriage and other tropes that can be bad for women...how to negotiate? We'd love to see you, and hoping for a lively conversation! @JuliaQuinn @sarahmaclean

BookNAround This makes me wish I lived in NY! 8y
julesG Shame I can't be there. What I hate about a lot of contemporary romance is that the heroines still behave like debutantes/wallflowers. Coming from a line of strong women, who have dared to oppose the conventions of their times, I want to see strong heroines. 8y
JoRead It is one of my favorite tropes! How I wish I could go! 😔 8y
See All 18 Comments
AliBG Wow! What a cool topic. 8y
EloisaJames @julesG @BookNAround @JoRead @AliBG I agree, Jules--except I love the trope at the same time (I think 26 year old virgins are hard to pull off in contemps but readers clamor for them). I wish you all could be there! 8y
minkyb Sounds fantastic! 8y
BookNAround I agree @julesG but I suspect women could only step out so far from convention without being in danger of being committed or completely ostracized by the world and it'd be pretty hard to write a successful romance with the heroine in an asylum! Kathy Hepinstall's Blue Asylum (not technically a romance) is a good one to read to give you an idea of the difficulties. 8y
CocoReads I wish I lived closer! I'd totally be there for this! 8y
julesG @BookNAround Well, that sounds harsh. Let's not put them in an asylum. Although I can think that this would make an interesting story. 😜 8y
CrowCAH Have fun; this looks like a great book/author event!!! Too bad I'm no where close to NY. 8y
Dragon That sounds like such fun! Enjoy! 8y
Jess_Read_This How neat!! This sounds like a terrific and interesting event! 8y

I loved this #romance novel.
Yes, partly because of the hero being a lot like House, MD (#fangirl), but mostly because the heroine stood up to him. She's no mousy little debutant/wallflower. Eloisa James writes strong women, beautiful and intelligent. @EloisaJames that's why I love your books.
There is a reasonable conflict between the MCs leading to a nail-biting climax.

I read a *lot* of romances, so it takes something special for one to stand out; and this has a lot of something special: @EloisaJames ' joie-de-vivre; a smart, funny heroine who is a true match for the hero; a great hero a la Dr. House; a plot about being human, forgiveness, acceptance, and of course, love.
