The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass | Stephen King
Roland the gunslinger and his crew barely escape one world only to slip into another. It is in this other world that Roland relates to his crew a twisted and entertaining tale of his first quest as a gunslinger and the love of his life, Susan Delgado.

For the past couple of years I‘ve read a classic during the span of twelve months. In thinking about 2024‘s yearlong project, I‘m considering ramping up my #chronologicalkingread and trying to finish one book every month. If I can do it, I‘ll head into 2025 about to complete The Dark Tower!

Nothing like spur-of-the-moment reading goals on the last day of the year…

When I originally read Wizard and Glass I was a bit disappointed. King slows down the action to give us a bonafide love story. It‘s not what I was wanting nor expecting.

On my second round I was struck by how like a Western it actually is; like a mix between the gritty, violent character studies of the 1970s and the technicolor romanticism of the ‘50s (with a little fantasy thrown in just for the hell of it) and I appreciate it so much more.

Books finished in April include Insomnia, Rose Madder, The Green Mile, Desperation, The Regulators, The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, Bag of Bones, Storm of the Century, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and Hearts in Atlantis. While a lot of incredible books vied for the top spot, my April pick for #readingbracket2023 is The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass. I'm starting to see a real pattern here!

Again, what is there to say about a series - and in this case, a book - that one loves as much as I love The Dark Tower and Wizard and Glass? This is a hauntingly beautiful tale of love, tragedy, perseverance, and loss, and it hangs perfectly in the middle of the saga recounting Roland's quest for The Dark Tower. This is a read I will always savor and enjoy, bittersweet though it may be. Bird and bear and hare and fish and 5/5.

I think this is my second favorite book in the series. It‘s a long one but it‘s worth the time. We get a bit of Roland‘s backstory and how he became a gunslinger and the man he is now. SPOILER ALERT: It‘s a very tragic story and it made me cry. (But then, I‘ve always been an emotional being.) #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

Pikathulhu This is absolutely an appropriate reaction to Roland's backstory! 2y

#SeriesRead2022 @TheSpineView

Having read this previously many years ago, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I remembered. Many readers find this one too slow, but for me , the pace is perfect because a lot of backstory occurs and this time around I notice more foreshadowing than I did in my first read.

I'm really loving my journey back to the tower. 💚

TheSpineView Great job! 2y

This backstory was necessary and all part of the tower journey. I think it‘s safe to say that King unquestionably captured the essence of passionate young love.

Vivid and descriptive, I found myself transported from my couch right into the pages of Mid-World.

As for the length of this book, I felt there were no wasted pages. Each page added something valuable and necessary to understanding the quest of the tower.

2. Yes, I‘m probably going to finish a book, even if I don‘t like it. So it‘s scary to make that commitment when a book is very long.
Luckily I was rewarded when I read this book because of the satisfactory conclusion of a long book in a long series.

4⭐ I just finished this chunkster of a book for the second time, and man, what a ride. It has my favorite moment in the whole series. Ironically, it is also one of the slowest books in the series for me. Not bad, just slow. But in this slower-paced tale, there are many important details about Roland that can help us better understand him. And what revelations were made in this second reading. I can't wait to continue on to the next one!

TrishB This is my fave in the series. 3y

The majority of this book is the back story of Roland Deschain, his life in Gilead, his old Ka-tet with Cuthbert and Alain, their time in Mejis. But the story's core surrounds Roland's first love, Susan Deldago.

There's just always going to be one book in a series that's not as good as the rest, this one is mine because I don't think it adds anything to the overall story but it offers a lot of history into Roland‘s character.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

CuriousG It's interesting how different people are, even though they love the same series. This is my absolute favourite of the whole series! 3y

🎧 Here we get Roland‘s origin story.

After surviving Blaine‘s riddle test of death the ka-tet is left in an alternate Topeka KS.

It‘s slow at times but interesting and feels much more like a western than the last two books because there‘s much less of the contemporary talk that you get from Eddie, Susannah & Jake.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3 👇🏻

Twainy The story goes back to the 14 year old Roland who had a raging sexual love affair with Susan Delgado. He is using an assumed name in a small western town with his two friends Alain & Cuthbert. The three were coaxed from their homes by their fathers.

There‘s a wicked witch, a rainbow, a yearly bonfire to burn scarecrows etc.

After the sad ending of Roland‘s story the ka-tet continues down the highway towards an emerald crystal palace.

👇🏻
3y
Twainy There was a pay-off at the end of the book that I had forgotten. I hope you read to the end.

Enjoy

Nute I feel this way about all of his books that I have read. There is so much in his stories. Every reread delivers a new tidbit, and it could be that I am reading them much slower now with a mature eye. When I was a teen, I gobbled them up super fast paced. 3y

This series is getting better and better. The more of Stephen Kings books I read, the more I find their traces and hints in the Dark Tower books. It's complex, but still easy to read. Deep, moving, unforgettable, even after months of not reading these books, I had no troubles at all finding myself with Roland and the others again.
