I wanted to like this more, as I really enjoy Christina Henry‘s books, but this just was a little slow and dull. It read slightly younger than its intended adult audience and had a writing style that struggled to keep my attention. It is short though so I did finish it. 2.5⭐️ Another #bookspinbingo and #roll100 done though!

This was a beautifully written story. Lyrical and sweeping, but very grounded in the real world. I loved the relationships between the women characters. The pace was very slow, for the most part, until everything came to a head in the last bit. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Welp. Doctor‘s appointment this morning says the pain in my left leg is probably more blood clots popping up, so while we wait for the test results to come back, it was time for a good cry, then dig out the compression socks and the rice bag, and sit down for some reading snuggled in my cozy sweater. 🙃

What can I say but that this book is like its protagonist, who is like the ocean? I really enjoyed reading this along with the #LMPBC notes from @KristiAhlers and @wordslinger42 . @ozma.of.oz I‘ll have it off to you soon!

For the #LMPBC and #bookspin I inhaled this one today. Yes, I needed Kleenex. This is the story of PT Barnum and his mermaid. Amelia truly touched me as a character. Although at times the read was a wee bit slow my need to see how it would end kept me engaged. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

Unpopular opinion with this book. I love this author retellings but what I have read, they are dark and even gory. This one for me was more like a second chance “romance” story for this mermaids called Amelia. I loved the character, so assertive, secured, determined. Her loves stories were so lovely, fast read and beautiful. So it is recommended but it was not what I expected based on previous author‘s retelling books. 3.4⭐️

Christina Henry has been my go to author for the #FairytaleReadingChallenge. This book did not disappoint. Our mermaid, Amelia, ends up as an attraction at one of PT Barnums oddity shows. Not as dark as some of her other work, this one was more of a feminist read. I liked it. @Charityann

This book was so so good, I really loved it

It‘s atmospheric and well written. Super descriptive so you can almost feel Amelia‘s ever changing feelings towards humans. She wants to be a part of the human world but feels like she never will be.

With a cute love interest and a happy ending, I definately needed this story after a bit of a rubbish week! ❤️

This was a beautiful adult fairy tale-esque book. I wished there was more time spent underwater but it was so elegant and well written. Definitely a read again book.

I found this to be a highly enjoyable read. I love books with coastal/ocean settings and sea based fairy tales and this one did not disappoint. Wonderful writing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked the 2 stories of a mermaid and P.T. Barnum meshed together. I was swept up in a wonderful fantasy of mermaids, performances, and romance ❤️ I felt so sad for Amelia during the hard times, but she stayed true to herself and did what was right. Great start to my Christina Henry obsession!

I discovered this book last summer, while doing research related to Barnum and the Siren of the Fiji Islands, for another book I wanted to write. The plot immediately won me over and, as I read it, I realized that I became more and more passionate about its story. The story it is very exciting, and every time the reader goes on to the next chapter.

Highly recommended. A Must for all those who love mermaids.

This is my review for #theunreadshelfproject2019‘s August challenge of letting Bookstagram choose a book for me to read in August. The choices were The Mermaid or Conversations With Friends. Bookstagram made a good decision. I like books with Mermaids in them and I like retellings. The rule of the challenge for this month is to read the book Bookstagram chooses for you to read or you have to unhaul it. Now, I don‘t have to unhaul this book.

I actually finished this the other day and can't stop thinking about it. I enjoyed this book a lot and really love Christina Henry's style. The way she writes, there is a lesson in her words, for everyone and for her characters.
I hadn't expected many of the turns in this book. Feministic, while questioning the humanness of humanity. What makes a mermaid different than a human woman? Or a fish?

An original telling of The Little Mermaid 3.5 ⭐ The Mermaid is set in late 19th Century; the time of travelling shows full of wonders. I enjoyed this story and the exploration of what it means to be human. How can someone who isn't human survive in a world more interested in exploitation & hatred than compassion & acceptance?

The follow up,Red Queen, was not as fantastic but still a creepy read & I also have her Lost Boy(Peter Pan of course) on my #MountTBR This one is a retelling of The Little Mermaid(duh🙄)& I cant wait to find out how she twists this one! #nosingingcrabsinthisone

Day three of my week off, and day three of Kindergarten. Just dropped the mini off and finally settling in with a book (fully embraced a stay at home mom life and deep cleaned everything for the past two days 😂.)

I can‘t seem to get in to this book. I LOVED Lost Boy more than I could put into words... but this one is dragging. Anyone else have that issue? 😓

Really enjoyed this story. I liked how Christina Henry added real people to a fictional story.

I think the best word for this book is "Pleasant". It wasn't overly exciting, there was not really any drama or anything that had me scrambling to read more, yet it was just a pleasant little read and easy to get through. Since Henry's 'Alice', I thought her stories would take on the same macabre nature, so a little disappointing to that effect but overall, good if you want a light and quick read.

Sneaky reading this on my phone while watching the kid I nanny play Mario. I absolutely adore Christina Henry and this book is proving to be just as great as the rest.

This book is such an amazing story, with good historical context with a nice mix of fantasy thrown in. The writing style is amazing and it's hard to put down from beginning to end. The characters are engaging and well written. One of my favourite ever reads! 10/10
