NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Capturing historical events, terrifying moments of danger, tragedy, the price of war, and the invincible spirit of a woman of honor, The Award is a monumental tale from one of our most gifted storytellersDanielle Steels finest, most emotionally resonant novel yet. Galle de Barbet is sixteen years old in 1940 when the German army occupies France and frightening changes begin to occur. She is shocked and powerless when French gendarmes take away her closest friend, Rebekah Feldmann, and her family for deportation to an unknown, ominous fate. The local German military commandant makes Galles family estate outside Lyon into his headquarters. Her father and brother are killed by the Germans; her mother fades away into madness. Trusted friends and employees become traitors. And Galle begins a perilous journey with the French Resistance, hoping to save lives to make up for the beloved friend she could do nothing to help. Taking terrifying risks, Galle becomes a valuable member of the Resistance, fearlessly delivering Jewish children to safety under the eyes of the Gestapo and their French collaborators. Then she is suddenly approached by the German commandant with an astonishing, dangerous plan to save part of Frances artistic heritage. Conducted in secret, flawlessly carried out, her missions will mark her for years, when she is falsely accused of collaboration at the end of the war. Orphaned and alone, she begins a new life in Paris, with the ghosts of the past always close at hand. Galles life will take her from Paris to New York, from a career as a Dior model to marriage and motherhood, unbearable loss, and mature, lasting love. She returns to Paris to run a small museum, honoring victims of the Holocaust. But her label as a collaborator remains, until her granddaughter, a respected political journalist, ensures that her grandmothers brave acts are recognized. Now a grateful nation will finally absolve this remarkable woman and honor her as the war hero she was.

Books based around the WWII era is my usual genre so I had no idea Danielle Steel ventured into this area. This was an enjoyable book that was easy to read but also made me emotional at times. This book was a pleasant surprise and I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes books based in the WWII era especially involving the French Resistance.

I've been almost completely MIA for weeks, but can now announce the results of a year's worth of work. I was on the Reading List committee, an ALA award to celebrate the best in genre fiction. I'm tremendously proud of the work we did: hundreds of books read and hours of discussion. You can also see the shortlists here: https://rusaupdate.org/2022/01/readers-advisory-announce-2022-reading-list-years...

BookNAround Very cool. That‘s a lot of work for sure. I‘m just starting up the WNBA Great Group Reads list reading period again and we only get 250 or so books to consider. I imagine you had exponentially more. 3y
Nessavamusic Very cool, some great books there! 3y

If you‘re scratching your head at the Goodreads Choice Awards, here‘s one critic‘s perspective. He‘s Editor of The Washington Post‘s Book World. (And yup, I went to high school with him.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/goodreads-choice-awards-an-an...

sammisho I usually agree with "best of" lists like Goodreads much more than the lists the critics/editors/publishers write. 6y
mydearwatson The article seemed a little snooty :-\. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I am a huge fan of the goodreads choice awards, but I‘m scratching my head so hard at this as the best book of the year. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
See All 27 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mydearwatson He has a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. But yes ... it‘s a little snooty too. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Ashley_Nicoletto I just don‘t get this best book choice, and a few others. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @sammisho I think they all have their place and perspective. 6y
sammisho The GR best book of the year is not the book I voted for, but I also didn't read it. Maybe I missing something spectacular? 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @sammisho Based on her other books, I can‘t imagine I‘m missing *that* much. I voted for other books too. But maybe we are missing that stellar read ... 6y
sammisho I read her other books and chose not to read this one this year. So yeah, doubtful that we are missing something. But I am very happy for peoole who read it, and loved it enough to vote for it! 6y
KarenUK I always think ‘favorite‘ and ‘best‘ are two totally different things, and both are just as valid, and both are subjective.... any list that gets more people reading is a good thing 💕 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KarenUK Absolutely true! 6y
WeeziesBooks BooksandLala on YouTube did a video about how the books that generally win are the most read (aka most popular author with a large readership) but not the highest rated. It‘s a popularity contest, at best. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @WeeziesBooks I‘ll watch that. It‘s definitely a popularity contest and always has been. I think that‘s intentional. 6y
Daisey @WeeziesBooks This seems completely true to me. I hardly voted this year because I will only vote for books I‘ve read and read very few new books this year. However, I‘m always tempted to vote for those by a well loved author or that I‘ve heard great buzz about. I‘m sure many others do vote for those, so the most read and most talked about are most likely to win. 6y
twohectobooks Thanks for sharing this article! I‘m a pretty avid goodreads user but I simply don‘t pay attention to the awards. If I‘m lucky I read maybe two new releases per year. The shortlist can at least be helpful for adding things to my tbr I suppose. 6y
LibrarianRyan I agree with @Daisey and @WeeziesBooks This is a contest of who is best known. It amazes me that books that have barely been released manage to win each year. Maas. Each year her wining books were only out a few weeks before taking home the prize. Plus, how are the titles nominated in the first place? Anyone know? More reasons we started the #LitsyAwards. 6y
catebutler Such an interesting article, I‘m so glad you shared it! I definitely think the choices are based on popularity. 6y
sprainedbrain Do people actually take the Goodreads Choice awards seriously? That‘s like comparing the People‘s Choice Awards to the Oscars. I love GR Choice for what they are: a popularity contest for the book-reading masses who like best selling books. 😃 6y
Hollie Thanks for sharing this article! 6y
eraderneely Critics should take issue with publishing over the GR Choice Awards, not readers. For the typical reader who may only read a few new releases a year, they are going to pick up (and then only be able to rate) whatever is best advertised. That is purely a function of where publishers choose to spend marketing dollars/pounds/etc. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Daisey I‘m in the same boat. Always reading my backlist with a few new books thrown in. And I only vote for what I‘ve read. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @twohectobooks You‘re very welcome. I do use the shortlist for suggestions, but it‘s rarely full of books I‘m not already familiar with. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LibrarianRyan I‘m so glad you‘re doing the #LitsyAwards again! I know a lot of people preorder and immediately read their favorite authors, like Maas. This makes me wonder how many votes each book on the shortlist is actually receiving also. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @catebutler You‘re very welcome. There‘s been some interesting discussion! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @sprainedbrain I don‘t take them that seriously, and they aren‘t the level of the various book awards, for sure. But I‘d guess they help Amazon and authors sell a ton of books. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Hollie You‘re very welcome! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @eraderneely OH YES! You‘re exactly correct. People who read don‘t necessarily recognize books that don‘t make it to the front page of the site or front shelves of the store. 6y

Schlinkles I‘m about halfway through 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Schlinkles how is it so far? 6y
Schlinkles @Whimsical.Curiosity The writing is great, the subject matter is pretty depressing, but I‘m curious to see how some things tie together eventually. 6y
See All 24 Comments
DGRachel I‘ve read Warlight and I have From a Low and Quiet Sea checked out from the library currently. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Schlinkles I'm not sure I could handle depressing. Report back on how you feel about it then you're done 😁 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @DGRachel what did you think of Warlight? 6y
DGRachel Meh. I mostly kept waiting for the point. If I hadn‘t listened to it on audiobook, I would have bailed. The audiobook narrator had a really nice voice, though, so I kept listening just for that. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @DGRachel gotta love a good narrarator. 6y
Schlinkles Will do 👍🏻 6y
KellyHunsakerReads I finished Warlight and liked it a lot. I also read From a Low and Quiet Sea and loved it! I am now listening to snap. 6y
Reviewsbylola No, but The Mars Room is on my TBR. 6y
Redwritinghood Just finished Snap and was so-so on it. Starting From a Low and Quiet Sea next. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Hunsakermountain what did you like about them? I'm hearing mixed reviews. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Redwritinghood I heard there was drama about Snap. 6y
KellyHunsakerReads The Ryan book is a beautiful character portrait which I always love. The Ondaatje book is beautifully written and quite literary. The themes are really well explored. I didn‘t love The English Patient but this one was really good. 6y
Redwritinghood @Whimsical.Curiosity I can believe that. After reading it, I‘m not sure why it made the list. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Hunsakermountain good to know, thank you! 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Redwritinghood that's what everyone said! What about it begins to question it's list making? 6y
Redwritinghood @Whimsical.Curiosity There is nothing there that distinguishes it from the others in that genre. There is no complexity in the plot and no themes relevant to our times. It is not a bad book. The writing is solid and it has a satisfying ending, but it‘s just nothing special either. 6y
bobregina Not yet, but I‘m for Overstory and the Mars Room. Very excited! 6y
KellyHunsakerReads I finished Snap and completely agree with @Redwritinghood 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Redwritinghood ah ok gotcha, makes sense. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @bobregina niiiiiice! I'm gonna try both of those. 6y

LibrarianRyan @Booksnchill all that matters is that you liked them. 7y
2BR02B I'm so on board. These will be a huge improvement over the GR Choice Awards. 👍 7y
RaimeyGallant Crap. I didn't realize that the Litten category was for an award. I would have nominated someone if I had my head in the game! 7y
LibrarianRyan @RaimeyGallant that's already. Use the link and put it in. It will let you nominate more than once. 7y
RaimeyGallant Cool. I'm going to wait until I finish Radium Girls, because I might nominate it for non-fic. :) 7y

The Man Booker longlist was announced a few minutes ago. In a stunning turn of events I've read almost half the list. These are the print copies I own. Pleasantly surprised that Lincoln in the Bardo made it. Underwhelmed by Ministry of Utmost Happiness.

We posted the full list on the blog: https://thereadersroom.org/2017/07/26/2017-man-booker-longlist/

JenP And unpopular opinion: I liked Underground Railroad but thought it was overhyped and not as good as everyone else seemed to think 7y
tstan I was planning on waiting to read just the shortlist, but I've read three, and have six more (just bought 4321). I think the rest aren't available in the US yet. I may actually read the winner before it's announced for a change! 7y
ReadingEnvy I've read three but I'm working on tracking down the rest! I may need to splurge and buy Elmet when it comes out in the U.K. because it sounds like my kind of thing. 7y
See All 17 Comments
ReadingEnvy @JenP I still may not read the whitehead. I didn't for the national book award or Tournament of books... so much hype and I feel I've read so many reviews I get the gist! 7y
JenP @ReadingEnvy which three have you read and which was your favorite? 7y
JenP @tstan good luck. Will be fun reading together if you do decide to try and read them all 7y
mrozzz I was about to say "what a glorious stack!" It still is of course, but I'm not surprised these are all on the list. 7y
JenP @mrozzz I am surprised mainly because they usually select books I've never heard of. 😂 7y
Redheadrambles Exciting list as unusually for me I have already read 3 - Whitehead, Saunders, Barry. Probably most keen to get to Exit West next but will follow your reading with interest 7y
JenP @Redheadrambles I am very surprised by how many "popular" well known books are on the list. What did you think of the ones you have read? 7y
mrozzz But Litsy opens us up to many more books!! 7y
Redheadrambles @JenP That's true usually they are more indie ? However I think last year they might have swung too far in that direction, for my taste anyway. I loved Lincoln in the Bardo unreservedly and would be beyond happy if it won. Enjoyed UR and Days without End to a lesser extent. 7y
JenP @Redheadrambles yes although I feel like I discovered some smaller publishers last year - although there are a few in this list. If remember correctly I think I liked last year's list more than you did. I'm really happy about Lincoln in the Bardo. 7y
Redheadrambles @JenP yep I think you did ! Although I threw my hands up in the air fairly early ;) The best discovery last year for me was The North Water. Now the decision is what can I tackle before the winner is announced 7y
ReadingEnvy @JenP I've read Exit West (🌟🌟🌟), Swing Time (🌟🌟🌟), and Lincoln in the Bardo (🌟🌟🌟🌟, but audio production gets an extra 🌟)... To me, I'm still looking for one that is a better fit to what I'd like to see win the prize. I did just start 7y
BarbaraBB I was a bit shocked that I know so many books on the longlist this time. In other years there were more surprises/discoveries. However, I now may be able to actually read them before the winner will be announced! 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB yes me too! Iv read 5 already so will be easy to complete the list this time without almost killing myself. 7y

Confession: I am obsessed with the Man Booker. I don't often love the winners but I love following and reading along. Every year we do a shadow panel for the award. The list comes out Thursday. Here are our predictions:

https://thereadersroom.org/2017/07/24/2017-man-booker-longlist-our-predictions/

Stop by and tell us what you think of our lists and tell us which books you think we missed. What are your predictions?

ReadingEnvy I'd love to participate in shadow paneling one year. I often find books I love on the long list in particular but don't always agree with the shortlist and almost never agree with the winner! But ima nerd and have this on my calendar..... 7y
ReadingEnvy P.S. I hope you are wrong about Will Self because I hate reading him! (edited) 7y
JenP @ReadingEnvy wrong about it making it? 7y

JenP @ReadingEnvy that's good to know. You are welcome to read with us and then I'll link to your review. Wish I had asked because I had been looking for an extra judge but just filled it last week. We could always host a group here together where we all read the longlist books. 7y
JenP @ReadingEnvy I hope I am wrong too 7y
ReadingEnvy (sorry I went back and edited it before seeing your question, just posted too soon!) 7y
BarbaraBB How nice, your shadow panel. I am obsessed by the Booker Prize too. Counting the days until Thursday! 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB my favorite month of the year is July because today the longlist announcement. Which books do you think will make it? 7y
BarbaraBB I am always wrong but my guess would be Autumn, Reservoir 13, Anything is Possible, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, The Night Ocean, Ill Will, The Nix, Exit West and The Underground Railroad... 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB I didn't love Ministry of utmost happiness but I did love her first book. I've never seen any list get more than 3 right so if a few of mine make it, I'll be happy. I did like the Nix which usually means it won't make it 7y
BarbaraBB Haha, yeah, I recognize that; when reading the longlist my favourites usually don't make it to the shortlist! Most of the time the nominated books are quite new as well: I always hardly know half of them! (edited) 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB yes! I loved last year - a book I would have never discover if not for the longlist. I didn't think it would be shortlisted but I enjoyed it. Last year I was convinced would win. 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB *i loved is what I meant to say above 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB sorry clearly having issues tagging books correctly 7y
BarbaraBB I don't know how that works either. But last year's longlist was very good, I thought. Better than the year before. The Many was a real discovery indeed. 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB completely agree. Everyone else seemed to think that it was a week year. I thought it was a great year. The sellout was brilliant albeit not my personal favorite on the list. I liked most of the list last year with a few exceptions and usually it's the other way around. 7y
BarbaraBB I was not too big a fan of The Sellout either but enjoyed most of the other books. On LibraryThing most people were complaining as well about last year's list while I liked it a lot! 7y
lynneamch I agree with Andrew that Underground Airlines was more deserving than Underground Railroad. 7y
JenP @lynneamch I haven't read it. I liked Underground Railroad but was stunned that it won so many awards. 7y
Kristelh @JenP I am excited to see the long list, hard to wait. 7y
BookwormM I can't wait either then I have to panic about all the reading 🤣🤣 7y
JenP @BookwormM I am in denial. Maybe we'll have read half of them?!? 😂 7y
BarbaraBB So, what do you think? Your predictions were good. I am excited about the list and have a lot of reading to do! 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB yes, Nicole got 8 right which is unbelievable. I got 5 and mentioned enough 5 which I had considered but then left off my list. Stunned that so many "popular" or well known books made it. 7y

Follow the #littenspickawards tag and nominate your favorite recent books! Browsing the categories has made me quite aware of the lack of books published in the last year on my "have read" list! I'm sure some of you will fare better in nominating! ??

EllieDottie I was having the same problem!! Apart entry I haven't read enough books 😟 8y
dariazeoli @EllieDottie I guess there are worse problems to have 😁 8y
AmandaL @EllieDottie @dariazeoli Same! I feel like I can't catch up to reading new great books, because I'm too busy reading the nearly new ones, or the ones I've been meaning to read for a while. 8y

Pickpick

The premise sounds interesting but I can't deal with the writing. In the first chapter alone, she starts 11 sentences with "And". It's supposed to be a bail not a pick but I can't edit it.

PatriciaU 😖drives me crazy, too! 8y
