Hi Littens! I need some help, please. I‘ve been trying to get my 8 y/o niece to read some of my fave books from when I was her age. She is very reluctant to step up to chapter books. I‘ve tried every genre, classics, new titles, even graphic novels. She just still loves her picture books. So, I‘m looking for recommendations for picture books, that have a little more to them and could be a good stepping stone to get her to chapter books.

vkois88 Have you tried the new Babysitters Club graphic novels? They're pretty cute... and maybe if you read them WITH her? 5y
SALeahey @vkois88 oh, I‘ve definitely tried reading to her, her reading to me or alternating chapters or pages. I‘ve even bought two copies of a couple books so she can follow along. I‘ll try the Babysitter Club graphic novels. Hopefully our library has them 🤞. Thanks for the advice! 5y
vkois88 No problem! I just really remember liking them and the Little Sister BSC books when I was little 5y

Centique My kids step ups from picture books were early reader books (from the school or public library, they only have a little more text than picture books) After that they moved to the kind of chapter books that still have imagery in most pages and spread out text - Geronimo Stilton, The 13 Storey Treehouse, most David Williams books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rainbow Fairies etc. I‘ve also been recommended Flat Stanley. 5y
Centique I‘d recommend chatting to your local librarian and also figuring out if she likes humorous stories, animal stories, adventure stories, magic, friends and clubs etc. My kids started out being real addicts to just one type of theme I guess - and got more adventurous as reading chapter books became second nature. 5y
Macker11 KAte DiCamillo has that Mercy Watson series that are SOOO cute!!! I own them all. They are a picture book that contains chapters but a very easy read. But might help her realize “chapters” aren‘t too scary ! 5y
Macker11 They are $3 on amazon which is nice (; 5y
Craftylikefox There are a bunch of chapter books like the baby sitters club and the graveyard book by Neil Gaiman that have been turned into graphic novels. That might be a nice in between Also Smile is a great graphic novel that might be a good (edited) 5y
Amie Princess in Black series are short easy chapter books with lots of pictures and are super fun 5y
kezzlou85 Early or easy reader books might help. They have more words than a picture book but not too many. My daughter loved the horrid Henry books and diary of a wimpy kid. 5y
BookNAround We love the Mr. Putter and Tabby books. 5y

Happy Sunday everyone!! I‘m looking for some excellent true crime books! I read Bad Blood and I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark last year and loved them both.

So, what else should I look into? Thanks so much!

ravenlee I think @kaye reads a lot of true crime, do I have the right Litten? Any recommendations? 6y
See All 32 Comments
Kaye Thanks for the tag @ravenlee Yep I read tons of true crime. A few will be listed below for a start . Holler if you need more. 6y
Kaye That‘ll be a start. I tried thinking up some of the less well known but some of my favorites. 👍🏼 6y
SALeahey @kaye thank you so so much!! I really appreciate all of these amazing recommendations and you taking the time to tag them!! 6y
Kaye No problem. 😊. I‘ve been reading true crime since 1980. Holler if you need more ideas. These were all very good. Enjoy. 6y
MonicaLoves2Read Any Ann Rule books are good 6y
RainyDayReading I second Devil in the White City and add The Midnight Assassin. If I think of any more I really liked I‘ll come back and add them. 6y

It‘s been a rough year, with so much time on my hands and by myself due to chronic illness/pain. The one thing I have to show for it is that for the first time ever, I have read 100 books in a year. I am so grateful to these stories for being there when I needed to escape more than ever. Oh how I love reading!

Eggbeater I'm not able to work due to a painful illness, reading gets me through it, too. I hope things get more manageable for you.💕 6y
BookwormM Good news about the reading bad news about the illness. I have ankylosing spondylitis so I understand chronic illness. Hugs 🤗 for you. 6y

I just found out that Lonesome Dove is the third book in a five book series. Can it be read as a stand alone or must I read the other books??

Thank you kindly! 🐴

BookishTrish It stands alone well 6y

Amie Lonesome Dove was the first published, so it stands alone just fine. The series wasn't published in the chronological order of the story. 6y

This book has been on my radar for many months. I have saved it to read until this weekend when we will go on our annual trip to the mountains in Virginia. This is the cabin where we will be staying. I can't wait to read this book in what I'm hoping will be the perfect setting.

JennyM You are brave! 6y

I splurged and stocked up on horror novels to read all month. First up is my first time ever reading Rosemary's Baby. Bring on the creepies!!

Texreader @GingerAntics It‘s a really good scary book. I read all his books back in my horror-stage in my 20s. 6y
mydearwatson This book is great! You might want to skip the sequel, though... 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader it‘s officially been added to my TBR and my “want to read” list. I‘ll try anything once. This may not be the book I read to wined down at night, though. lol 6y

Bailedbailed

I was hoping for a thrilling thriller, what I got from the first part (80 pages) was a boring bore. On to the next!!

mommamatch I read a lot of Dean Koontz in high school. Haven‘t picked him up since... 7y
SALeahey @mommamatch I have only ever read Odd Thomas before this. I loved that. It was a quick, interesting read. Based on mixed reviews, maybe this was not the best choice for my next Koontz. 😕 7y
mommamatch Ageing myself, but all my Koontz reads are pre-Odd Thomas. I can‘t think of any titles but eventually they all had the same plot and I knew how they‘d end 7y
See All 7 Comments
Lisaw13 I loved the Odd Thomas series! But, yea, I bailed on this one too. 7y
KateFulfordAuthor Want something NOT so boring?!? If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y
SALeahey @KateFulfordAuthor Sounds fantastic! I've added to all of my wishlists and will pick up as soon as I have some extra cash squirreled away in my book buying fund. It's depleted at the moment, but I can't wait to get my hands on your novel! (edited) 6y
