Mrs. Sherlock Holmes
Mrs. Sherlock Holmes: The True Story of New York City's Greatest Female Detective and the 1917 Missing Girl Case That Captivated a Nation | Brad Ricca
Mrs. Sherlock Holmes tells the incredible true life story of Mrs. Grace Humiston, the New York lawyer and detective who solved the famous cold case of Ruth Cruger, an 18-year-old girl who disappeared in 1917. Grace was an amazing lawyer and traveling detective during a time when no women were practicing these professions. She focused on solving cases no one else wanted and advocating for innocents. Grace became the first female U.S. District Attorney and made ground-breaking investigations into modern slavery. One of Grace's greatest accomplishments was solving the Cruger case after following a trail of corruption that lead from New York to Italy. Her work changed how the country viewed the problem of missing girls. But the victory came with a price when she learned all too well what happens when one woman upstages the entire NYPD. In the literary tradition of In Cold Blood and The Devil in the White City, Brad Ricca's Mrs. Sherlock Holmes is a true crime tale told in spine-tingling fashion. This story is about a woman whose work was so impressive that the papers gave her the nickname of fictions greatest sleuth. With important repercussions in the present about kidnapping, the role of the media, and the truth of crime stories, the great mystery of the book and its haunting twist ending is how one woman can become so famous only to disappear completely.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
A very interesting woman and quite an intriguing #history of Grace. Much like the cases she dealt with, her life is filled with mysterious details.
Her life was fascinating and worth getting to know but I did find myself with more questions than answers when I finished.
All in all I'm glad I finished this book.

So, let me get this straight. People didn't like Grace because she was so good at making the white collar criminals mad and nervous?
Sounds like a hero! 🦸‍♀️

I wanted to love and be absolutely blown away by this book and yet . . . the presentation of this woman‘s undoubtedly fascinating life fell sort of flat. The author clearly spent a lot of time researching the subject matter but the story just felt jumbled with alternating timelines. I would still recommend this since I had no idea who Grace Humiston was before this book but I wasn‘t as wowed as I had hoped to be by the book.

If you find historical novels tedious and too ‘real world‘ to deal with at the moment, do not read this book. If you are the mood to read about one of the first female lawyer/detective based in New York in the early 1900‘s who championed for the poor, immigrants and young women during a time when women were not even allowed vote, read this historical book.

AiBBot I almost bailed on this book numerous times. My rage towards how they treated her and the women around her....especially when she became middle aged....We have come so far in 100 years and yet, not so much. Oh the rage. 6y

I really enjoyed this fascinating book about one of New York‘s greatest female detective and lawyer. For me is was all the more fascinating because my paternal grandparents were alive during this (but they were in Massachusetts not New York) so it was neat to make that connection that maybe they had heard about this story. Grace Humiston‘s contributions to society were almost lost to history if it weren‘t for Brad Ricca! Highly recommend it

Amazing book! This is the absolutely impressive narrative biography of Grace Humiston, one of the most prolific female detectives in history. She broke ground in so many different ways, and Brad Ricca truly does her justice. From her humble beginnings as a nighttime law student to her game changing career in the NYC spotlight, this book covers it all. Plus, there's the added mystery of her tackling one of the most riveting cases of all time.

lynneamch Oooh! Sounds like a great companion read with this one about Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton detective. 6y

I started out enjoying this book. Even though it jumped between years with every chapter. The story of Grace who championed women in the early 1900's is worthy of knowing. I just dont think this book did the best job. It became mired down in extraneous paragraphs and things not relevant to Grace's story. I rate it 2.5 .⭐

The narrator was really good and saved the story for me. Grace Humiston is a really interesting person with a really interesting life. This book did a so-so job of telling that story. It was all over the place, it needed a better editor. At a few points it felt like he was just dumping all his research into the book whether it added to the story or not. It wasn‘t focused. She dismissed any connect to Holmes so the title is ridiculous.

Here are the books I finished recently, and returned to the library today. Two made a very good impression, and them I reviewed separately. The other two, I must say, only registered as a "meh." With a title like "Mrs. Sherlock Holmes" I expected something more. The first part of the story was engaging. But the end seemed to drag itself out to a thoroughly unremarkable conclusion. That is my just my impression. #recentlyread #ENDLESSTBR

While Grace Humiston as a person (kickass lawyer for the people, New York‘s first female consulting detective, advocate for missing girls) is fascinating, this account of her life and biggest cases falls a bit flat. I didn‘t like the time hopping first half, I‘d rather have had a fully linear narrative with an intriguing prologue setting up the Ruth Cruger case instead of the one about Arthur Conan Doyle for no reason.

Here is mine: INCIDENT PART-TIME TEACHER

I was a business teacher but a full time one so this was fun it turned out to be these words.

I had a few incidents in my 34 years as a business teacher, but mostly everyone was happy to learn to type.

Did you learn to type?

tournevis I did learn to type in the mid-1980s, in my private highschool for girls run by Catholic nuns. In a large typewriter lab that had been state of the art in 1958. On Olivetti manual typewriter with approximalivaly 8 miles of travel on the keys. Good times. 7y

Carolyn11215 My mom made me take typing in high school because she said if I could type I‘d always be able to make a living. I wasn‘t very happy about it but like so many things my mom told me that I didn‘t want to listen to at the time, she was right. I‘m very grateful that I can speed type as I watch some people hunt and peck on their keyboards. Saved my bacon more than once when I was typing up college term papers at the 11th hour as well! 7y

Bailedbailed

This started off so strong. Narrative non fiction about a girl that went missing 100 years ago and the female lawyer turned detective who helped solve the mystery of her disappearance--what's not to love? Unfortunately, the author got so tied up in the story of Grace Humiston, the detective, that the actual story gets forgotten. Almost halfway through I decided I'd rather just google it. Such a shame.
