This author did an excellent job taking the compelling story of real life Pinkerton agent Kate Warne and making it her own. She seamlessly integrates the few known facts about Warne and develops a believable story of dedication, love, loss, bravery and page-turning intensity. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

But, this book is a beautifully rendered fictionalized account of her early life as the first female Pinkerton detective. Historical fiction based on the real-life Kate Warne, the first female operative for Pinkerton Detective Agency, this is a well-written, fast-paced story that takes Kate from Chicago, through the south and the East cost, out to the Dakota territories and right through the Civil War.

pickSo, oops... This turned out to be more historical fiction than mystery. It‘s about a detective/spy so there is a lot of thrill, intrigue and mystery. But it felt more like a HF than mystery.
Now that my #LMPBC group has been warned, I really really liked this book! I don‘t want to say a lot since I‘m the first person to read it. But this book spans from 1856 to the end of the Civil War.

I enjoyed this novel about Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton agent, and her role as a Pinkerton spy during the Civil War. 3 stars because the writing felt a little lackluster to me...but I‘ve been spoiled by other creatively interpreted historical fiction like Girl Waits with Gun and I Was Anastasia recently. #lmpbc @Kappadeemom I‘ll have this in the mail to you shortly.
pickI loved this book loosely based on actual events in the life of the first female Pinkerton, Kate Warne. There aren't a lot of solid facts about Warne but the few there are certainly make her highly badass, especially protecting President Lincoln on the way to his inauguration!

pickPleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this quick & entertaining read. The story is loosely based on the life of Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton Detective. From the early days of the Pinkertons in Chicago to the election of Abraham Lincoln & the early years of the Civil War, Macallister imagines what life & work was like for Warne. The historical details aren‘t always accurate & the story is rather shallow, but the book is a fun read.

pickAn interesting look at the first female Pinkerton agent, Macallister weaves nonfiction into her fictional account of Kate Warne. Warne is a strong female figure, taking on a job that really open to women in the US antebellum period. It‘s a shame not much is known historically about Warne. While parts of this were a little slow, the second half of the book really picked up for me, leading to an ending that had me biting my nails!
