The Late Monsieur Gallet | Georges Simenon
post image
Panpan

The Late Monsieur Gallet (aka Maigret Stonewalled) (Inspector Maigret), by Georges Simenon (1931)

Premise: Inspector Maigret is called to Sancerre to investigate a murder, but the more he investigates the less everything makes sense.

Review: I find the Maigret novels really hit or miss, and sadly this was a miss for me. Cont

Mattsbookaday It excels where Simenon always does: in the atmosphere, setting, and in making the story revolve around the psychology of the victim rather than being a typical ‘who-dunnit‘. But this story just got bogged down in its own complexity. The reader is as stonewalled and frustrated as Maigret is throughout, and the ending doesn‘t pay off in a satisfying way

Another set of quick mysteries complete with resolutions at the end. It‘s fun to match wits with Encyclopedia Brown. I got about half of these easily, but there were a couple I only half-figured out, and three that stumped me. Definitely haven‘t aged well - the Indian trials were cringey and Charlie‘s teeth collection still makes me queasy. #ebbr

Ruthiella Yes, I thought aspects of this hadn‘t aged well either. 1d

‘“Shakespeare was right…Lust often is “murderous, bloody, full of blame,/Savage,extreme,rude,cruel,not to trust.”‘
A bloody murder sends CI Banks, and his team down a rabbit hole in an effort to understand gaps in the victim‘s life story. Is the why of her murder rooted in her past? Literature, poetry, & music play an essential role: Shakespeare, Philip Larkin,Vivaldi,Mesiaen. A character even suggests that Banks is in competition with PD James‘⬇️

kspenmoll ⬆️ Adam Dalgliesh, but Banks has no idea who that is he does decide he must check this book detective out. With this book I rediscovered my enjoyment with this series. Maybe it was all the literary & music allusions. (edited) 1d

Checking in with my #EBBR pals! I was bested in three cases. I‘ll put in under a spoiler comment my issue with one particular.

Fun fact: we find that Encyclopedia lives in a state with a coastline! I‘m imagining Oregon.

I am enjoying the goofy humor, like:

“I‘ve seen a match box and a boardwalk, but I‘ve never had to solve a pillowcase,” said Encyclopedia thoughtfully. 😂

“He‘s like a set of false teeth, always trying to get even” 🤣

Ruthiella In “The Case of the Stolen Diamonds “ would small glass beads really break that easily? 🤔 I think not?

TheAromaofBooks These are a lot of fun, but there were a couple where I found myself looking slightly askance at the solution 😂 10h
Ruthiella @TheAromaofBooks Yes, me too! 😂 But a ten year old would not notice, probably. 8h

If you are in or around the Houston area, definitely go see Todd Waite's final Alley performance. He is and has always been amazing as Sherlock. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. ❤️

dabbe I wish I could! #sherlocked 🖤 3d

Librarybelle I almost rolled my eyes, since we‘ve seen this time and again in the stories, in which Holmes decides what is just and who should be punished. The justice system is there to parse judgment on guilt or innocence (at least, up until recently when the justice system is being attacked on a broader scale, but I digress…). Holmes and Watson should not be judge and jury. And yet, they were. 3d
dabbe I guess Holmes thought justice was done: the “eye for an eye“ idea. Dr. Sterndale killed the murderer of his love, so hey, it's all okay! As long as he goes to Africa, I guess. Big 🙄 on this one. I did the eye-rolling for you, @Librarybelle! 🤣 2d
CogsOfEncouragement @Librarybelle @eeclayton @dabbe I also thought this was especially flimsy “justice”. 1d
