I am posting one book per day from my extensive, and ever growing, TBR shelves. Some are old and some are new, some were gifts and some I don't remember why I bought them.

I read this one during Christmas Day. Perfect for that day. I enjoyed it. What I like is Holmes analytical thought process to make a conclusion and discover who committed the crime or the crime activity. I will say that it was a cliché who done it but it was good. I also like how atmospheric, descriptive the author was.3/3.5 ⭐️

Gissy @mabell Calories😳😂We called that pastry “quesitos”. It has cream cheese inside. We usually eat it warm so you can feel the cheese war, but not totally melted😋 12mo

Mehso-so

This was my first “Sherlock” book. Do not rely on me to solve any crimes 😬. I gave it a so-so because I‘m not a huge mystery fan.

I have little detective skills, but I am proud of my point check in number: 13,758! 🥳

dabbe When I taught SH to my students, I discovered that a big trait in a detective story is that we are NOT supposed to be able to solve the crime; that's why the detective is so brilliant and usually odd. We're just the Joe Schmoes sitting on the couch, eating potato chips while the detective tells us how he easily solved the crime. And yes, we usually feel stupid afterwards. And #woohoo for your points! 💙❄️💙 12mo
AnnR Way to go! 👍📚🎉 12mo
NikkiM5 @dabbe were you looking at me through my window 🤣🤣🤣 12mo
dabbe @NikkiM5 Nope. I was looking in a mirror at myself! 🤩🤣😍 12mo

This SH fan was not disappointed by this novel. Attention was given in keeping the writing style and our beloved Holmes and Watson as close to Doyle's intent as possible. Perhaps Sherlock is a bit more condescending to Watson, but Watson definitely holds his own and his skills as a doctor are needed almost as much as SH's detective skills. A Gothic keep where a supposed Black Thurrick-Krampus demon is running amok, this is a worthy holiday read.

AnnR I had not seen that cover before. Yikes!😮I listened to this one on audio and it took me a while to figure out one of the characters was saying Thurrick. 😄 (edited) 12mo
BookishMadHatter You have me intrigued. My TBR may have just gotten longer lol 12mo

dabbe @AnnR 🤩🤣😍 12mo
dabbe @BookishMadHatter Yay! It was a fun read, and one whose ending I did not solve! 🤩😍😃 12mo
BookishMadHatter @dabbe should this series be read in order? 12mo
dabbe @BookishMadHatter Not at all. Just jump right in. If you've read some Sherlock's in the past to know their personalities, you'll have no problem. I am going to go back, though, and read them all! 🤩😍😃 12mo

It‘s no Hound of the Baskervilles, but it‘s pretty good. Didn‘t know what to expect as it is a pastiche & I‘ve read limited amounts of the originals, but I am a fan. but it was festive & enjoyable, I think it was true to the characters & had some good twists & silly Sherlock Shenangians.

BookmarkTavern Sounds like a lot of fun! 12mo

It took me a couple of chapters to get into, but this turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable Holmes pastiche. It combines elements of the Country House Murder, and Baskerville-esque popular folklore, satanic aristocratic forebears, conniving servants, ghostly apparitions, all set in a gothic frozen landscape. Great fun!
Lovegrove set his story in real Yorkshire geography, which was well researched, which added to the book's atmosphere. 4⭐

batsy This does sound very fun! 12mo
Bookwomble @batsy If you've read all the original Holmes stories, this is a worthwhile addition 🙂 12mo

""Well," I said, letting out a breath I hadn't realised I was holding."
?
To be fair, I'm enjoying this novel, but, really! ?

quietlycuriouskate Oh no, the unconscious breath-holding strikes again! 12mo
Bookwomble @quietlycuriouskate Thankfully, it was the only egregiously poor bit of writing! 12mo
julesG That sentence took me out of the story, too. 12mo
Bookwomble @julesG I wonder if, this sentence having become notorious, some authors use it for a laugh? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 12mo
julesG I hope so. 12mo
