Shot in the Heart | Mikal Gilmore
13 posts | 15 read | 21 to read
Gary Gilmore, the infamous murderer immortalized by Norman Mailer in The Executioner's Song, campaigned for his own death and was executed by firing squad in 1977. Writer Mikal Gilmore is his younger brother. In Shot in the Heart, he tells the stunning story of their wildly dysfunctional family: their mother, a blacksheep daughter of unforgiving Mormon farmers; their father, a drunk, thief, and con man. It was a family destroyed by a multigenerational history of child abuse, alcoholism, crime, adultery, and murder. Mikal, burdened with the guilt of being his father's favorite and the shame of being Gary's brother, gracefully and painfully relates a murder tale "from inside the house where murder is born... a house that, in some ways, [he has] never been able to leave." Shot in the Heart is the history of an American family inextricably tied up with violence, and the story of how the children of this family committed murder and murdered themselves in payment for a long lineage of ruin. Haunting, harrowing, and profoundly affecting, Shot in the Heart exposes and explores a dark vein of American life that most of us would rather ignore. It is a book that will leave no reader unchanged. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mikal Gilmore is the youngest brother of the infamous Gary Gilmore who was executed in Utah by firing squad in 1977. This is an amazing, heart wrenching memoir of the Gilmore family. Mikal is a powerfully emotional writer as he shares in great detail his family history of dysfunction and abuse. He provides an understanding of how the Mormon religion views punishment, which sheds light on Gary‘s choice of method for his execution. #MountTBR

Gary Gilmore, immortalized in Norman Mailer's "The Executioner's Song," was executed by a firing squad in 1977 after vigorously campaigning for the death penalty when he was convicted of killing two store clerks in Utah. Mikal Gilmore is his brother. Here he tells the story of the wildly dysfunctional Gilmores: a family destroyed by a multigenerational history of child abuse, alcoholism, crime, adultery, and murder. Heart-breaking and sobering.

Written by the brother of infamous killer Gary Gilmore (the focus of Norman Mailer‘s book The Executioner‘s Song, currently on my TBR), I read this over twelve years ago when a college professor recommended it to me.

I have it three stars and I‘m wondering why. I fully intend an audio reread in the near future. #musicalnewyear #myshot

I finally have a good one for these prompts! This is a great memoir of a very dysfunctional family. Mikal Gilmore is a journalist who wrote this in an effort to make sense of his brother - a murderer who was executed for his crimes and chose to be shot. If I remember rightly, he really digs into the history and psychology of their family and the Mormon religion - so it‘s a thoughtful rather than shocking read.

CocoReads Both this and Executioner‘s Song were excellent books. Great reads, both of them. 6y
Kaye I‘ll second what @CocoReads said. Both really good ! 6y
Billypar "fills in multiple gaps in Mailer's account"... Isn't that book like 1000 pages or something crazy? How many gaps could there be? ? 6y
Centique @Billypar yeah! 😂 I haven‘t read that one. I can only imagine they mean he didn‘t know the family backstory - Mailer must have nailed the events in detail I‘m sure! 6y

True crime is a genre I love but I don't have a shelf for it on Goodreads! 😱 just ran around my house locating these true crime TBR reads. I think my favorite one I recently read was Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven. I've been to Colorado City...and it is creepy. Looking forward to these reads as well! #SEEWHATIHAVEWON

I saw the movie about him first, so when I read the book I pictured Tommy Lee Jones. #nonfictionlove #17booklove

CocoReads I have this book! I can't remember if I read it or not though. I have read The Executioners Song and watched the movie (many many years ago to both). 8y
wonga @CocoReads i should read The Executioner's Song now, like a double feature! 8y
CocoReads @wonga It's very long but very good. Although I read it about holy moly, it's been almost 25 years! It's the book I was reading when I visited my boyfriend, who is now my husband. He proposed on that trip. And we'll be married 23 years in March. 8y
wonga @cocoreads great story! that's the thing about books, they're always part of our lives :) 8y
