Normal: A Novel | Warren Ellis
post image
Pickpick

Normal by Warren Ellis
Recommended to me by a friend that knows I consider myself an armchair futurist. This friend is a huge Ellis fan. I‘m not. That said, it‘s a good read. Not great, but imaginative and gritty - and short. Originally serialized in 4 parts, the reader needs to stick with it until the end for any real payoff. Recommended to speculative fiction fans and conspiracy theorists.

LauraJ Sometimes I love Warren Ellis, other times, not so much. I liked this one too. The characters stuck with me. 6y
Quasifesto @LauraJ Ellis is mean and doesn‘t always punch up. I often feel like he‘s just shitting all over everything because it amuses him. 6y

During my months long absence/ slump, I read a ton of digital comics that I probably won‘t bother to log, and this classic by Marx. Meh, I get where he was coming from, and I don‘t necessarily disagree, but even for classic, leftist, political theory it was a tad dry.

Not really a very good book. I finished it. Your mileage may vary. It's not a bad idea, but this is a very old, obviously wealthy woman, that does not recognize her privilege. Also, there is an unnecessary story of her putting down a dog. Short and cohesive, but I found it condescending and obvious.

Advanced reader copy via LibraryThing.
A collection of essays from one author on sexism in academia (in general), contingent labor in academia (particularly as it pertains to sexism), and the authors personal experiences with both. Out of 37 (chronological) essays only 5 or 6 were outstanding. There is a considerable amount of repetition. There is pretty good book in this work, but not as it is presented. Recommended with reservations.

Just give Warren Ellis creative control of every D-list character Marvel ever made. This book is bad ass. Karnak finds the flaw in everything and exploits it. This makes him insufferable, and very effective. One book, in and out, the whole story, and you don't need to know anything going in. Dark, brooding, and satisfying.

Vol. 3 (the last of this run) gets back to basics, and that's a good thing. Fast paced, noir / horror combo. Almost as good as Vol. 1.

The follow up to the Warren Ellis run is a big fizzle. Wood dies very little to set himself apart from Ellis' work. This begs the direct comparison and Wood is on the losing end. Only for completists.

The Invisible Man, at least, the idea of an invisible person, is a fixture of 20th century SF/horror. The book, however, can be skipped. Read a brief summary and spend your time elsewhere.

5 stars. I‘m no cowboy, but I spent several years living in the parts of Texas McCarthy loves. In fact, I married @Crowcrumbs in the church pictured above. it looks like this still today. I speak a touch of Spanish and I‘ve traveled Mexico. These things all contribute to my love of this book. The audiobook performance was spectacular. This book left me gutted me in a way I can not remember any book doing before.
