I'm still a sucker for paperback editions, but this device made reading far more accessible and handy, specially for research purposes.
Now I have another cover for it, but I kept the choice of magnetic closings and truly recommend. 🖤📚

I have been planning on getting one since ages. Finally i am but little advice from listy community would be valuable.

Reggie So I got the paper white as a gift from work and I still prefer to read on my kindle app off my phone just because I‘m able to have a black background and white font for my eyes at night. But I don‘t know how the other one is. Good luck! My dad he also prefers the kindle app off the fire tablet than the paper white I ended up passing along to him. 4y

readingjedi I started on the basic, upgraded to the Paperwhite and now have the Oasis (a gift). The difference between the Oasis and Paperwhite is nowhere near as huge as the difference between the basic and the Paperwhite. I'd definitely recommend the Paperwhite, it's a joy to use and does pretty much everything you need an ereader to do. 4y

TheAromaofBooks If you literally just want to use it for reading, I would go with the Paperwhite. It has a different type of screen that doesn't strain my eyes like reading on a phone or regular tablet does. I noticed a big difference when I switched from my old Kindle Fire to the Paperwhite. However, you can't do anything else on the Paperwhite (like download a game or surf the web), so that is its big disadvantage. 4y

TheLibrarian Paperwhite! The screen is great for reading since it doesn‘t bother my eyes like most technology. Plus you can read it without worrying about glare. I haven‘t used my Kindle Fire since my I got my Paperwhite a few years ago. 4y

tenar You‘re asking between the basic Kindle and the Paperwhite? Not the Fire tablet, right? I had an earlier version of the Paperwhite, and last summer I bought the basic Kindle to replace it. I‘m pleased, it‘s extremely similar, and I used the money I saved to buy the no-ads feature. Last year the major differences left between the basic Kindle and Paperwhite were the pixel density, waterproofing, and memory size. 👇🏻 4y

tenar If you want to read manga on it, read in the bath, load up on Audible audiobooks, or just really want to feel premium, those extras might be something you need. The basic Kindle is so light it almost feels like a toy, and sometimes it takes a few pages for the shadow of a dark image to clear, while my old Paperwhite was heftier and had less of an artifact problem. What is the contrast feature you mentioned? 4y

ishan0986 @tenar on the paperwhite kindle you can turn the background black with the text being white. The basic one misses this feature. I think it's called dark mode. 4y

tenar Oh, got it! If you need that, certainly the Paperwhite‘s the one for you. If you‘re concerned about the brightness level when reading at night, the light on the basic Kindle can go very, very dim (or obviously all the way off, and you can still read with a lamp just like a real book). I use dark mode on all my other devices and am fine with the basic Kindle at night, but it looks like @Reggie would have loved that feature! 4y

tenar P.S. My favorite Kindle feature is one not a lot of people use - it has a dedicated email address to receive documents and books. I love sending long PDFs or public domain classics from Project Gutenberg to my Kindle without having to manually hook up to my PC. This little Paperwhite is only two years old ... but the battery is gone. It won‘t reset or hard reset or charge. 😰 I‘m pretty good with tech, so if anyone has a suggestion, I welcome it. Otherwise I‘ll buy a new one with the Black Friday specials. (At least my timing is good ...) #kindle #kindlepaperwhite

KristiAhlers Mine both died after only 2 years. So bummed about that. And a little ticked as they are expensive and I‘m not a fan of having to constantly replace them. I‘m now using my tablet with the Nook and Kindle apps. Good luck. 4y

ImperfectCJ If you're looking to replace it with another e-reader, check out the Kobo, especially if you get a lot of library books. After years of Kindle ownership, my family is finding Kobo to be a better fit for the way we read e-books. 4y

Updated my kindle app, and now there‘s lots of data and reading goal options to choose from! I‘ve been reading more on my iPad since getting my first one after Black Friday, but I also have a kindle white that I need to get back in the habit of using. I definitely think I can meet that goal between books bought for my kindle and ebooks checked out from Libby.

I did it! I talked my mom into buying one too. She has several paperwhite and is trading some in for it. I‘m excited! I‘ll still use my other paperwhite but I now I can read in the bath and not freak out if I might drop it. 😍🤗

My son presented me with a kindle last week. He knows the worst part of the nerve bruise( result if Red Cross inserting a needle into my nerve when giving blood last February) & its long recovery is how painful holding a hardcover or big paperback can be as I read. This is so light comparatively & I can hold it with my left hand if necessary. I am one lucky Mom. ❤️❤️📚📚

I had one for years I rarely used, then got the paperwhite last year and have used it so much! Never thought I'd do ebooks, but it is a big plus, especially laying down! Lol😉 5y

BookBabe I saw you were asking around about e-readers, so I came here to see if you got one! Congrats! I love them. I have an iPhone and iPad, and I do read on them sometimes when it‘s more convenient for whatever reason (like it‘s the device in my hand at the moment), but e-ink e-readers are a far superior reading experience. My new Kindle Oasis is arriving today, I‘m so excited! I‘ve been using Kindles for the past few years. 😊 5y

A recent spike in screen time (most of it is involuntary, work-related 😕) has been straining my eyes and stressing my brain, so I decided to trade in my 1st Gen Kindle Paperwhite for the newest one. And wow, I‘m rediscovering a lost love! I got in the habit of reading all my ebooks on my phone for a long time, but the e-ink experience is so much closer to reading a real book. Plus no annoying notifications! My eyes are much happier already. 😊

julesG Is it really such a big difference between the early Kindle Paperwhite and the most recent one? Mine's still working, and I cannot afford a new one right now, but am wondering how much better the resolution might be. 6y

WhatThePuck I have the first generation Kindle Fire and I was just thinking about switching to a Paperwhite. I don't need it for the apps any more. I didn't have a smart phone when I first bought the Fire. Lol. I just need it for reading now. 6y

alysonimagines @julesG I compared the two side by side after I got the new one. I did see a difference in resolution, but I don‘t think it‘s huge. Honestly I wanted the new one for other reasons, like more font selections, a flush front screen, and new navigation options. But if your current Paperwhite still works, I think it holds up quite well against the new version. That‘s the beauty of these simple e-readers: all they have to do is be a good page turner. alysonimagines @WhatThePuck I also have a Kindle Fire, which I bought mainly for watching videos and movies. I never use it for reading unless it‘s a book with lots of images or color. If you just want a device for dedicated reading, the Paperwhite is great. It‘s more like reading a real book than reading on a phone or tablet, and it doesn‘t have any of the distractions that other devices carry. 6y

Ordered myself a shiny new Paperwhite 😊

I used to have a Paperwhite and loved it, but I gave it to a friend tha summer and switched to using my Kindle Fire. But I think the extra screen time is straining my eyes, so I caved and ordered a new Paperwhite. The e-ink screen is just so much more vision-friendly, and there are two readathons in January! I need to be on my game.

We loved our first Kindle Paperwhite that we purchased a few months ago....so we put another on our wedding registry for my husband! It just arrived today! We cannot wait to both be able to use them...especially on our honeymoon next spring when we travel in Europe!! 😁

📌yes. 📌 I have a paperwhite 📌several times a day usually. 📌181. I just deleted a whole bunch this week. 📌all the time. It‘s how most of my books are obtained. I believe in library books. Ebooks are books. 📌I don‘t have audible. 📌 I bought the case which was protective in the color that was cheapest. Lol. When I bought this, I didn‘t realize how much I would use it. #loveit #showyourkindle

Samplergal @Kaye I have an IPad that I use as well. But, the reflection off the screen is terrible. I can‘t use it outdoors at all. So I didn‘t enjoy e books. My hubs gave me a kindle for my retirement and he made sure it was good for outdoors reading. Love it. 6y

Samplergal I‘d replace it if I could get Libby audiobooks on it. That would be the only reason imho. 6y

WHAT?! Over the summer, our Air Force base‘s community center did a reading challenge where the kids read and logged books for raffle tickets for a chance to win a prize. My oldest daughter won the grand prize in her age group and won a freaking Kindle Paperwhite!! So jealous, for real. Now she‘s reading all the free kids Prime books. ❤️❤️
