Doctor Sleep (Media Tie-In)
Doctor Sleep (Media Tie-In) | Stephen King
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor! From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining--an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is "[a] vivid frightscape" (The New York Times). Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance's sanity, as his paranormal gift known as "the shining" opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook--and his father's legacy of alcoholism and violence--kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname "Doctor Sleep" by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone--who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining--the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan's own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl's soul and survival...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ King‘s stories that are laden with supernatural elements aren‘t nearly as scary to me as his more realistic ones. A coven of vampire-adjacent creatures are on the verge of dying out. They feed off of a certain kind of rare human. King connects this plot to the original story fairly seamlessly. Getting to know Dan Torrance decades after The Shining was a real treat. Abra is incredible, too.

I looove Will Patton. He‘s incredible w/ King.

bookishbitch I agree. He is an excellent narrator for King. 4w
britt_brooke @bookishbitch For sure! I first heard him in Mr Mercedes. So perfect. 4w

Anyone entering the pages of this sequel expecting more of The Shining will likely be disappointed. This isn't about delivering more of the same. Instead, this book examines the concept of legacy - the legacy of Danny's experience on the man he becomes, the legacy of the man his father was, and how it informed Dan's own shortcomings, even the legacy of Dick Halloran taking a young Danny under his wing and teaching him about his gift. 4/5

It took me a month but I finally finished Doctor Sleep! I‘d seen the movie when it first came out so I knew all the major plot beats already, but I did still enjoy focusing on Danny and his journey with alcoholism and recovery. I don‘t think this one is as scary as The Shining (I couldn‘t sleep with that book in my room it scared me so bad), and I could‘ve done without the very unnecessary slurs, but overall it was a good background read. 4/5⭐️

Danny Torrance is all grown up and is trying to put his life together. Which includes not drinking, following the twelve steps, keeping his job and saving a kid from a group of psychic vampires called The True Knot.
I loved it 🖤

5feet.of.fury I LOVED this one. I felt like the emotional state of the characters was very fleshed out, Dan dealing with addiction, Lucy‘s depression caring for her aging parent & Abra managing the emotions of the adults around her. I loved the non stop action of the second half of the book, I didn‘t want to put it down. 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury yes! It was such an emotional book, you get so invested in these characters! I legit could not put this down and I‘ve already read it before! So so good and now I want to watch the movie! I can‘t remember if I saw it when it came out! 2y
5feet.of.fury I often think that SK is slow to set up a story, & that was probably true here, having The Shining as a reference point, going through Danny‘s initial struggle, rock bottom & then trying to get his life back was a really good journey. Going through all that at the Overlook and trying to numb out psychic powers would screw anyone up. 2y
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead I haven‘t watched the movie either but… I want too to. I‘ll have to rewatch the Shining miniseries again first. Not Kubrick‘s which King used his author‘s note to hate on. Lol 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury I haven‘t seen that miniseries in ages! I may have to do this on Monday! 2y
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead same I probably haven‘t seen it since I was too young to be watching it 😂 2y
BookwormAHN I loved it. @5feet.of.fury I almost forgot about the miniseries. I still need to watch Doctor Sleep as well 😺 2y
TheNeverendingTBR Loved Doctor Sleep, I thought it was a brilliant sequel. It still feels unfinished, I feel like there should be more to Danny's story. 2y
CatLass007 I haven‘t done a very good job at keeping up with my reading for the SK readalong. But I am familiar enough with The Shining and its sequel, Doctor Sleep. The Shining is my favorite of all the SK novels I‘ve read, probably because it‘s the one that has frightened me the most. I believe that Doctor Sleep is a worthy follow up to The Shining. For whatever reason, I didn‘t find this book nearly as frightening as the first book. But I still enjoyed it 2y
CatLass007 I was sad that Danny became an alcoholic like Jack. But it is an inherited illness, and if Danny wasn‘t a little effed up after the events of the first book, it wouldn‘t have been believable. I guess readers are willing to suspend disbelief only so far. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2y
Karkar I would love if we get more story from Abra in her own book. 1y
BarkingMadRead @Karkar that would be amazing! Stephen King loves Easter eggs and he has been known to revisit old characters, so there‘s hope! 1y

Whew! 49 more miles today and I managed to ride 100 miles total this weekend on my Peloton! I‘ve never done they many before! Everything hurts and I‘m dying, so obviously I need to take a steamy bath with a good book! #losersclub #doctorsleep #almostdone

5feet.of.fury That‘s a TON of miles! What prompted you to do 100? 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury every few months there‘s a peloton challenge called Pelofondo. Everyone does ridiculous amounts of miles during the two days. I usually do 50, because my knees are a mess from arthritis, but I‘ve been determined to hit 100 for awhile now. It finally all clicked into place! I will absolutely never do it again 🤣 2y

🎧 The sequel to The Shining. Surprisingly good book.

I had reservations.

There‘s a bit about Danny & his mom growing up then there‘s a time jump to adulthood on his own & drunk as a skunk due to … the shining.

And boy it takes off from there with callbacks to the original.

I liked this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Reggie I like how he intersects that evil group with Charlie Manx from his son‘s book Nos4A2. It‘s only a paragraph but it‘s a nice dad to son nod. 2y

This was a really great sequel to The Shining, definitely lived up to my expectations. Seeing little Danny grow into a man with his own baggage was raw and real. I loved all the characters, even down to the side characters that take Dan under their wings when he hits rock bottom and is struggling to find the right way up again. The True Knot were evil, but their family-like unit felt realistic and made them more horrific.

I have to say that I had incredible high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, I dismissed King‘s form of writing when developing these expectations. This is a wonderful sequel to The Shining, an insight into Dan‘s development and the aftermath of the Overlook Hotel. I found that the story moved too slow in sections, as it meandered through the important backstory.
