Nancy Drew 15: The Haunted Bridge
Nancy Drew 15: The Haunted Bridge | Carolyn Keene
29 posts | 28 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
Mr. Drew is on the trail of an international ring of jewel thieves and asks Nancy to assist him. The trail leads to a summer resort area. Before Nancy has a chance to start work on her fathers case, a golf caddy tells her a frightening tale--in the dense woods nearby is an old wooden footbridge guarded by a ghost! Intrigued by the caddys story, Nancy decides to investigate. Several riddles confront the young detective as she attempts to solve the mystery of the haunted bridge and track down a woman suspected of being a key member of the gang of jewel thieves.

Bartescue is just awful. Anytime he‘s in a scene I think of Julia Sugarbaker and Ray Don.

I continued with my yearlong reads standing on the right

I continued with the monthlong reads; Lark Rise to Candleford #HashtagBrigade, Sense and Sensibility #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow and Hard Times #WhatTheDickens

I finished Gliff, read Wild Houses and started The Haunted Bridge

I‘m still listening to The Christmas Bookshop

I‘m also reading Anne Frank‘s Diary #Netherlands #foodandlit

Lcsmcat How are you liking Year of Wonder? I really enjoyed the Kapsberger lute piece. That one was new to both me and my husband. But we‘ve found a couple pieces where the movement numbers and names didn‘t line up with the ones on the recordings we found. It‘s not a big deal, just odd. 1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm always on the lookout for yearly reads. Added this to my list to choose from next year. 1d
AnneCecilie @Lcsmcat I‘m enjoying it. Except for that I listened to everything 2 yrs ago, they are all new to me. I listen on YouTube and have absolutely no idea of knowing if what I find is accurately correct then the title says it‘s the right piece. Most of them have been quite upbeat if that‘s the right word. 3h

They waited at the fountain till after 9 PM and now Nancy wants to call on people at their homes to gather information?? Nancy is letting her enthusiasm override her manners.

Librarybelle Oh my! Emily Post would so not be happy with Nancy! 3d
Ruthiella It‘s a little late, yes. But pre cell phone days, I think it might have been more common to just drop by someone‘s home? 🤔 Then again, Nancy is a determined sleuth! 3d
bookandbedandtea That's what I was thinking! 😄 2d
See All 6 Comments
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella That's a really point! Still, it seems like there would be a polite cut off time, especially for calling on strangers! I still abide by the rule from my childhood about not calling people on the phone (except those in your inner circle) before 8AM or after 7 PM (dating myself 😂) so a late night unexpected drop in stood out to me as a no no. 2d
dabbe And how does one go about just finding real estate agents' home addresses? 🤔 2d
bookandbedandtea @dabbe Right?! I wouldn't think the yellow pages (or similar) would have included home as well as business addresses but maybe. 🤔 As @Ruthiella mentioned, things have changed quite a bit! 2d

No Nancy Noggin Knockouts in this one, but some hefty hand trauma that hinders Nancy while playing for the golf championship at a ritzy club where she, Bess, George, and the boys are there to help Carson Drew nab a gang of jewel thieves. Nothing out of the ordinary about this story! Nancy's pretty much a golf pro; Burt, Dave, and Ned are first-aid experts, and Burt is a champion sprinter who nabs a bad guy. What's not to like in this fun romp?

AlaMich Nancy Noggin Knockouts! 😂 It did seem to happen pretty frequently to poor Nancy. (edited) 4d
Librarybelle So…she‘s not a bridge-building expert in this one??? 😂 4d

The look and feel of the illustrations has been changing (a bit) throughout the series but I feel like they made a big jump in this book. Suddenly the girls look like they are from the late 60s/ early 70s whereas the oldest one here (from Red Gate Farm) looks like they're still in the 40s.
I'm not sure I noticed that when I was a kid but I'm enjoying the differences now.

Librarybelle I wonder if the illustrator changed. I have not researched this one yet, but I‘ll have to see! 5d
Ruthiella I‘ve also noticed how the illustrations have changed. In the edition I am reading, the girls are playing golf in SHORTS! 😱😂 5d
bookandbedandtea @Librarybelle I thought about researching it but haven't taken the time yet. 😁 5d

bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella Right?! I was quite surprised by the shorts.Yet they disparaged Barty for his "modern clothes," as Bess called them. ? 5d
Ruthiella @bookandbedandtea He‘s probably dressed like a beatnik, with a black turtleneck and beret. 🤣 5d
dabbe @Ruthiella In my version, it looks like he has a goatee! 😂 5d

#WhereAreYouMonday

I'm at a mountain lodge *somewhere* with Nancy, Bess, and George. 😁

@Cupcake12

Ruthiella I just read the first chapter last night! A full golf course at a mountain lodge? 😅 Sure, why not? 6d
dabbe So am I! 🤩😂🤗 6d
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella Hmmm I didn't think anything of it because mountain resorts here (CO) have golf courses. They've gotta get those summer dollars, ya know! 😉 6d
See All 6 Comments
bookandbedandtea @dabbe I figured I wouldn't be the only one! 😁 6d
Ruthiella Well, wasn‘t golf invented in Scotland, where there‘s plenty of hills and mountains? Plus, Pebble Beach here in California at the foot of Big Sur. It‘s a failure of imagination on my part! 🙃🥸 (edited) 6d
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella Not at all. I regularly read things that make go hmmm (as the saying goes 😆) only to mention it to someone else and realize that, oh yeah I did know that was a thing. 🤷‍♀️🤔 6d

We‘re two weeks away from our next #NancyDrewBR discussion, #LittenDetectives !

The idea of a haunted bridge makes me a bit nervous, but I‘m sure the intrepid Nancy will solve the mystery!

4✨ It has been so long since I read a Nancy Drew book. I‘m so glad I picked this up again because I found myself wishing I had more time to read it. Now that I‘m older I think I can appreciate the older style of writing that didn‘t make a lot of sense to me as a kid. Nancy is working her way to a golfing tournament at a hotel she is staying at with her two besties Beth and George.⬇️

Roary47 2️⃣ When Nancy hits her ball into the rough she stumbles on a mysterious bridge that the caddies all think is haunted. Meanwhile, her father is trying to locate a person of interest in a jewelry smuggling scheme. 2y

Cleaning and getting rid of toys my oldest doesn‘t want. If you look closely you can see her arm. I‘m just guiding step by step to make sure it gets done to get ready for new things she‘s getting for Easter. Honestly, I‘m mostly reading while she makes a bigger mess. 😅

RaeLovesToRead I can't see the arm!! 2y

I picked up the 1937 edition on the left the the other day. I wanted to compare the text, as I've heard they were somewhat rewritten in later editions. I read the first chapter of the original, then read the first chapter of the 1972 edition. Very different! The gist was the same, but it was certainly a more substantial rewriting than I was expecting! Now I'll have to read all of each of them to find out how the rest was changed!

staci.reads Neat editions! I've always been curious about that too. I've heard some titles were much more extensively rewritten than others. Did the changes in yours seem to be changing the plot or updating settings? 7y
mabell @staci.reads Thanks! So far it was the same plot, but almost all the text had been rewritten. The beginning started in a different place than in the original. The "ghost" rumor is introduced immediately, instead of finding out about it further into the chapter i.e. the newer one starts with a bang ? 7y
batsy Oh, that's so interesting! I've never read the originals, as it were. I think it was after the second editions that the books were sold internationally... 7y

mabell @batsy I haven't read any either! The reprints are far more common, so that is what most of my collection is. It's fun comparing the two and seeing what was changed 😊 7y
