The Collected Poems of J.R.R. Tolkien Box Set: Three-Volume Box Set | J. R. R. Tolkien

Although I'm now out from under, Skye is determined to be a book model today! #CatsOfLitsy

I've included a Chunkster Challenge for my 2026 reading, and I'm starting with this three-volume box set of Tolkien's poetry, with sage comments by scholars Scull and Hammond.

Across the three books, that's cxvi+1501 pages, so I'm unsure that I'll get to the other chunksters on my list, but it's the taking part that matters 🙂

Bookwomble @kspenmoll @AnnCrystal The intro says there was a general expectation in early 20thC English society for men of Tolkien's class & education to write poetry. JRRT made serious attempts at poetry from age 18, and wrote it throughout his life. Most of his works contain poetry, and this collection gathers those together, along with some not previously published. Every poem in this set has pages & pages of commentary & notes, but it's still a big opus! 1d

In a moment of poor planning, I've finished my book and am stuck under a cat, so can't get my next book 😑

If you need a book about quiet, gentle souls navigating their lives through the turmoil that can be modern times, then Leonard and Hungry Paul will be a balm.
The chapters alternate POVs of the two friends, with dips into Hungry Paul's mum's, dad's and sister's perspectives, all given space to be themselves.

Bookwomble There's an incipient romance for the inexperienced Leonard, and Shelley, again, is her own person, not just an object of his desire. There's the mildest of perils, too, which, in such an unruffled story, still gave me some anxiety until it was resolved.
Hungry Paul has a monk-like calmness and serenity (with one funny exception), seemingly unworldly, while finding and perfectly fitting his familial and social niche.

Bookwomble "Nice" can be a flavourless adjective, and even a critic's insult, but this was nice in the best way: heartwarming, gently humorous and life affirming. 5⭐? 2d
