Lynnsoprano @bmsddk It was beautiful. The house is gorgeous, and the statuary hall is at the end of the tour, so there are all the statues I remembered from the movie😀 I wish we would have had more time to explore the grounds, but we got to a number of recognizable spots. 8y

I actually don't have monthly TBR goals. I read what sounds interesting (or has to be finished). These are a few on my radar. Hope(less): Judgement of the Six, Book 1 | Melissa Haag

Both are creepy 😖 A couple of the few books I've read with them! Werewolves (shifter kind) are not as scary as vampires, to me. This vamp novella disturbed less since it focused on the series' riddle solving versus...vampire-y things, haha. After reading several deep nonfics, the gargoyle v. harpy conflict drew me in. It's mostly mild paranormal romance, just a little arch enemy plot, and plenty of easy humor. I ended up truly enjoying the short well-written series! Let yourself have fun with the characters and story 😊 Also perfect for cleaning the palate after a long heavy reads run. Character development driven. Recommended for paranormal romance, #YA, or happily ever after fans👍

the_hibernator @mom2bugnbee I, too, heard about it on Litsy. I'm trying out North and South. @bmsddk I ❤️ Colonel Brandon. Alan Rickman probably helped a lot with that, though. Anyway, he's my fav romantic interest in all Austen. He's sensible, sensitive, and Down-to-Earth. He's also deeply passionate, even if he is able to control and moderate that emotion later in life. He's so wonderful. *swoon 8y

Leniverse @bmsddk S&S is my 2nd favourite too. I love that she gets political in it. That whole thing about second love that Marianne is so absurd about? Was the general consensus at the time. For women. But Marianne thinks it should hold for men too. And Elinor argues against it, while her heart still clings to her first love. And then society pushes M into a 2nd love. Austen turns convention upside down and inside out, and makes it seem proper. ;) 8y

JustTrish The short answer is - sometimes you don't😁 It's ok to read it 2 or 3 times to catch what you missed. I had to do that with Watchmen. I loved it - but it does bombard you. 8y

DeborahSmall Watchmen was my first graphic novel. It's fantastic! @LauraJ I think it was more the format, the years of reading only novels, I felt I needed to concentrate more,but other distractions like kids don't help. I plan on trying another. My son has a great collection, I should find something to give another go. @bmsddk I did give up on it but had too many distractions at the time. Next time round I'll make sure I have some peace! 8y

Hornsby78 Another person here HIGHLY RECOMMENDING Sandman. This is how I learned to read comics: Let your eye naturally go where it wants to read. If you get to the bottom of the page and what you read doesn't make any sense, go back to the top and start over. MOST comics are read right to left, one page at a time, but you get different ones now and then. Comics taught me to loosen up a little with my reading. Go with the flow. 8y

eric.small This was my first graphic novel. It can be a bit overwhelming at times. I would encourage you to give it another shot when you can concentrate a bit more. It is well worth your time. 8y

bmsddk @Bookworm54 It wasn't something I personally liked, but enough have such that there's a good chance you will too! My biggest problem was that the dramatic license was so overboard it took me out of the story. I'm ALL for ridiculousness in satire, but when done successfully, it still shouldn't be absurd to the point where the story is unbelievable even in context of the absurd. That said, there are still some fun qualities. Hope you enjoy it! 8y

Bookworm54 I will give it a try if nothing else, and I can always just revert to pride and prejudice if the zombies annoy me! I have seen a few of these style of books where a classic has been mixed with something else. Like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter etc and I never really fancied them, but I decided Halloween was a good time to give it a try! 😋 8y

Strange scifi somehow capturing readers' curiosity! Alternating viewpoints unfold the plot's three layers. Prose flows smoothly even during bursts of very soft science dialogue. Expected short story plot twists may or may not surprise. Challenged perspectives and optimistic speculation transform what could be cliché into humorous, albeit entirely unrealistic, food-for-thought. Recommended for social commentary scifi fans seeking a quick fun read ☺

Fun activity: replace some/all of the characters with yo-yos, then see what happens. I still don't think this story would change or get twistier! Eyelit I have coloring books for tv shows (doctor who and Sherlock so far - but Firefly and Buffy will be out soonish)... and I only have one literary coloring book and it's for Locke & Key. It's all right. I want the Jane Austen one and I've seen a Poe one floating around 😃 8y

lilredhen Next Gen, l like the optimism and rosy outlook they have-even when lousy things happen, they are still an optimistic bunch. DS9 is interesting for its exploration of religion and racism (look deep, you'll see it) 8y

lilredhen LOTR was a bedtime story my mom read to us (yes, a bedtime story; it's one of the first I remember her reading to us) and I love the down to earth nature of the hobbits, their quiet and simple lifestyle and the contrast with the more "advanced" races 8y

lilredhen Lunar Chronicles-love the riffs on fairy tales. I love fairy tales, and I love a good retelling. Six of Crows-they aren't heroes, and they don't pretend to be. They are flawed, but their stories are so rich and so understandable that I love them for how they turned out. 8y

lilredhen As far as those who read them and love them I find that the Star Trek fans are, for the most part, optimists with a forward thinking perspective. LOTR readers I know are deep thinkers-they read and re read the books, picking something wonderfully new out each time-and they also favor a quieter way of life for the most part. 8y

lilredhen Lunar Chronicles and Six of Crows-I haven't met a lot of people who have read them outside of Litsy, and I think y'all are just awesome lol. 8y

bmsddk @lilredhen One of the primary reasons I love DS9 is how tastefully provocative it is! They seemed to address some meatier issues more head-on than the other series did. Did not end all those episodes as hopefully as with TNG, but almost always thinking. I can imagine it would be fun to have LOTR read out loud to you; it would bring to life all the lyrical description 😀 8y

bmsddk @lilredhen I made my sister and Mom read Lunar Chronicles and Six of Crows (they loved both), but other than them, I've also not met people outside of Litsy who have read them 😂 Last year someone asked me why I was counting down to Nov. 10, and they gave me a weird look when I told then it was for Winter's release date 😜 You guys are great with understanding things like that! 8y

bmsddk @lilredhen Lunar Chronicles was a fun mildly scifi retelling with several thematic and character layers. What other fairy tale retellings do you enjoy? I loved the growth of our anti-heroes in Six of Crows, and the writing quality is sharp! Those are interesting observations about personalities in different fandoms. 8y

lilredhen @bmsddk Robin McKinley has a whole slew of fairy tale retellings that I love-Spindle's End, Deerskin, Beauty and Rose Daughter, as well as quite a few short stories. Jessica Day George has some great retellings, too, starting with the Twelve Dancing Princesses and going from there. 8y

lilredhen And yes, LOTR read aloud is a completely different thing, especially if the reader hits a good cadence. 8y

I'm diving into the works of Neil Gaiman after the raving reviews here on Litsy! He has so many books, so I'm not sure where to start. Happy endings are preferred these days, and I don't usually like horror, but these are flexible. So fellow #Littens, what do you recommend??

Abby-J You should read American Gods first. It's generally accepted as his best work, so if you are going to like a Neil Gaiman book, its probably going to be that one. 8y

Bookworm54 The only ones I have read so far are The Graveyard Book and Stardust. Both are amazing. I haven't yet read Neverwhere but I have heard nothing but good things. It's just sitting on my shelf waiting for its turn! 8y

Humanatea American Gods is incredible, but Good Omens is my personal fav to recommend first-timers. It's more outrageously funny than his other books thanks to Terry Pratchett 8y

Leniverse Good Omens was my introduction to Neil Gaiman. It's a good place to start. Then maybe move on to Stardust (and then watch the movie adaptation which is brilliant!) You might want to wait a bit with Coraline and The Ocean at the End of the Lane if you want non-horror happiness. The Graveyard Book (novel and graphic novel) and American Gods is a must read at some point though. Can't help with the short stories. About to start my first one myself. 8y

Bookworm54 Personally I have the novel, and although I haven't read the graphic novel the prose would definitely work well in that format. So either would work ☺️ With Good Omens, I struggled as it is written in collaboration with Terry Pratchett. It felt very much like Pratchett, and writing isn't to my taste. So although people love it, it may be better to read one by Gaiman himself too to get a better idea of his style :) 8y

samalot I read Good Omens first and fell head over heels, but The Graveyard Book novel would also be a great starting point. Trigger Warning was very fun and spooky if you'd rather start with short stories. 8y

samalot @bmsddk More spooky atmosphere than anything truly frightening. There's also a shorty about David Bowie and one about Dr. Who, so not just creepies. I listened to the audio and his voice is very soothing :) 8y

moranadatter I would say start with Neverwhere. It's my favorite. I wouldn't start with American Gods. I think it is on a lot of people's minds because of the upcoming tv series, but it's not his most accessible work. 8y

moranadatter @bmsddk It's longer, denser, and the plot moves more slowly; it's complicated with side plots. It is a fantastic book and a must read, but I wouldn't start with it unless you prefer a slower-moving, more complicated story. 8y

Leniverse @bmsddk As for the Graveyard Book, I read the novel before the graphic novel and that worked well for me. First the plot details, then the plot again with illustrations. Now I just a film/TV adaptation! (All of Gaiman's work should come in book, graphic novel, movie, and audio book narrated by Neil himself.) 8y
