Hello Littens! It has been far too long -- November was a hectic month, so I was not able to do much here. Please know that I wish I could have liked and commented on your wonderful posts from last month, because you all are awesome and always have beautiful pictures and/or something insightful and fun to say 👍😊 So excited to be back!!! 📚🌞

obviateit It's good to see you again! 8y

moranadatter Welcome back! Glad you're here. 8y
Lynnsoprano @bmsddk It was beautiful. The house is gorgeous, and the statuary hall is at the end of the tour, so there are all the statues I remembered from the movie😀 I wish we would have had more time to explore the grounds, but we got to a number of recognizable spots. 8y

I actually don't have monthly TBR goals. I read what sounds interesting (or has to be finished). These are a few on my radar. My current reads cycle includes books by #Littens @SiriGuruDevSingh and @JonathanDunne, and both books are off to great starts! 😄 Rereads help me out of book hangovers and if my head is too flared to follow a new story but I still want to read. ~ #Day1 #NovemberTBR #PhotoADayNov16 #bookphotochallenge ~ @RealLifeReading

Abby-J I don't really keep a TBR, either. I'm really moody about what I want to read, and I tend to rebel against things I'm "supposed" to read even if I choose them myself. 8y
bmsddk @Abby-J TBR list kindred spirits! 👍😁 8y
SiriGuruDevSingh 😍❤️❤️ Wow! I'm impressed you can read so many at once! I read one at a time (my TBR is whatever pile of books I bought before my husband started yelling like Yosemite Sam, that I now have to finish before buying any more)📚💗💕 8y
bmsddk @SiriGuruDevSingh Haha, thanks! I don't know how to be in the process of reading one book at a time -- I keep losing interest, even if I'm really getting into the book 😛 That is hilarious! At least you have your TBR list sorted out for you. What's up next on your list? 8y

Visceral. Cuts to the core. Reflective and Revealing. Hard realities subtly threaded with hope. 315 pages of poems, companions to our late night fears, early morning ponderings, and midday questions. Born from his own spiritual journey, Cairn's work is accessible to the religious and non-religious, as his voice speaks of collective human experience through the individual. Absolutely recommended for fans of poetry, philosophy, or beautiful writing!

After reading several deep nonfics, the gargoyle v. harpy conflict drew me in. It's mostly mild paranormal romance, just a little arch enemy plot, and plenty of easy humor. I ended up truly enjoying the short well-written series! Let yourself have fun with the characters and story 😊 Also perfect for cleaning the palate after a long heavy reads run. Character development driven. Recommended for paranormal romance, #YA, or happily ever after fans👍

Leniverse Sense and Sensibility is such an underrated work! It gets forgotten because people are too busy arguing whether Pride and Prejudice, Emma, or Persuasion is her best work. 8y

JEMoutrageous @the_hibernator The one in DC? I saw it too. Thoroughly enjoyable. 8y

the_hibernator @JEMoutrageous No, the one in Minneapolis. 🙃 8y
JEMoutrageous @the_hibernator Ahhh... I know there are different versions of it being done right now. There was one in NY that was a success. I think that play went to some cities. Then other companies were adapting that play or making new adaptations. 8y
the_hibernator @JEMoutrageous I watched the Kate Hamill adaptation which is the one in New York. 8y
mom2bugnbee I'd never heard of Serial Reader! Thank you! Yay for @Litsy introducing me to new things! 8y
bmsddk @Leniverse @the_hibernator @JEMoutrageous Is it showing too much book nerd to say I got super excited to see this S&S chat in my notifications? That is so exciting you were able to see it on stage!!! It is just by a hair my second instead of first favourite Austen work (there were a couple characters I thought needed more development, plus particularly relating to a P&P character). What are some of your favourite elements in S&S? 8y
bmsddk @mom2bugnbee Glad the Litsy community introduced you to Serial Reader 😀 I heard about it from here too. Have you learned about other things from here worth sharing? Would love to look into them if so! 8y
the_hibernator @mom2bugnbee I, too, heard about it on Litsy. I'm trying out North and South. @bmsddk I ❤️ Colonel Brandon. Alan Rickman probably helped a lot with that, though. Anyway, he's my fav romantic interest in all Austen. He's sensible, sensitive, and Down-to-Earth. He's also deeply passionate, even if he is able to control and moderate that emotion later in life. He's so wonderful. *swoon 8y
Leniverse @bmsddk S&S is my 2nd favourite too. I love that she gets political in it. That whole thing about second love that Marianne is so absurd about? Was the general consensus at the time. For women. But Marianne thinks it should hold for men too. And Elinor argues against it, while her heart still clings to her first love. And then society pushes M into a 2nd love. Austen turns convention upside down and inside out, and makes it seem proper. ;) 8y
Linsy Love this! Such a good point. 8y

Short and a tad gritty--a fresh take on beloved characters in their mysteriously-ever-after endings 😄 Lulling storytelling builds to looming plot climax. Stunning images instill somber determined (with a dash of playful) mood, integrating seamlessly with almost poetic prose. Far away yet alluring characters pull us into their decision-making. A fun quotable read recommended for fans of fairytale spinoffs, ambiguous endings, or illustrated novels!

I've read illustrated novels, serial comics, comic strips, but not graphic novels yet! This is on my TBR list (random person at bookstore highly recommended it 😀) ~

bmsddk @DeborahSmall Oh no! Were you able to get back into it? 8y
LauraJ @DeborahSmall You may have struggled because it wasn't all that good. 8y
See All 12 Comments
LauraJ Take your time. The best graphic novels are more of an experience than a read. 8y
JustTrish The short answer is - sometimes you don't😁 It's ok to read it 2 or 3 times to catch what you missed. I had to do that with Watchmen. I loved it - but it does bombard you. 8y
bmsddk @LauraJ @JustTrish Thanks! Good to know to give it a decent time allotment. 8y
DeborahSmall Watchmen was my first graphic novel. It's fantastic! @LauraJ I think it was more the format, the years of reading only novels, I felt I needed to concentrate more, but other distractions like kids don't help. I plan on trying another. My son has a great collection, I should find something to give another go. @bmsddk I did give up on it but had too many distractions at the time. Next time round I'll make sure I have some peace! 8y
Hornsby78 Another person here HIGHLY RECOMMENDING Sandman. This is how I learned to read comics: Let your eye naturally go where it wants to read. If you get to the bottom of the page and what you read doesn't make any sense, go back to the top and start over. MOST comics are read right to left, one page at a time, but you get different ones now and then. Comics taught me to loosen up a little with my reading. Go with the flow. 8y
bmsddk @Hornsby78 That's a good idea, to go where the eye wants, thank you! Graphic novels are like comics amped up, haha 😅 8y
eric.small This was my first graphic novel. It can be a bit overwhelming at times. I would encourage you to give it another shot when you can concentrate a bit more. It is well worth your time. 8y
beccaeve There is an annotated version of the Sandman comics. My library has it and that's what I've been reading. It's super helpful!! 8y

No idea who Daria is, but fierce warrior Elizabeth Bennet has enough smarts and snark to feel bad about (in distant hindsight) directing it to her love, Mr. Darcy! ~ #Day19 #DariaWannabe #SmartAndSnarky #octphotochallenge #bookphotochallenge ~ @LibrarianRyan

Bookworm54 Ooooo is this good? I just got this from the library for #allhallowsread 8y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 It wasn't something I personally liked, but enough have such that there's a good chance you will too! My biggest problem was that the dramatic license was so overboard it took me out of the story. I'm ALL for ridiculousness in satire, but when done successfully, it still shouldn't be absurd to the point where the story is unbelievable even in context of the absurd. That said, there are still some fun qualities. Hope you enjoy it! 8y
Bookworm54 I will give it a try if nothing else, and I can always just revert to pride and prejudice if the zombies annoy me! I have seen a few of these style of books where a classic has been mixed with something else. Like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter etc and I never really fancied them, but I decided Halloween was a good time to give it a try! 😋 8y

[DELETED] 2852984487 I adored the movie, but have not yet read the book so I don't know how closely the movie storyline follows the book 8y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Curious to know what you think of it ☺ 8y
bmsddk @RStorey I read a summary of the movie online, and its plot seems to be very, very different than the book's. Interested in your opinion of the book when you get around to it ☺ That's good to know the movie is worth watching, thanks! 8y
LibrarianRyan I thought the plot was different from the books plus they threw in gratuitous sexual ideas I didn't think it needed. 8y
bmsddk @LibrarianRyan Agreed, those ideas didn't seem to flow in the book, nor did they seem to add anything to the story, in my opinion. 8y

Part of my Mom's Christmas gift arrived (I'm *that* person who shops gifts very early, haha) 😄 A Christmas Carol is a fave of hers ~ The Cratchits are some of the best parents, showing their kids love's value even in hard times. Scrooge's father is one of the worst! Thankfully there's a happy ending for all 💞~ Couldn't find it in the system ~ #Day18 #BestParent #WorstParent #BestWorstParent #octphotochallenge #bookphotochallenge ~ @LibrarianRyan

ReadingOver50 That book looks awesome 😄 8y
bmsddk @FUNdamental Thanks for the stack add ☺ Wanted to let you know, just in case, that the book I tagged is the novel of The Christmas Carol (unfortunately the coloring book pictured doesn't yet seem to be in the database). 8y
bmsddk @ReadingOver50 It's a stunning cover!! The illustrations to colour are so beautiful too 😀 8y
Blueberry PBS sometimes plays The Christmas Carol Musical around winter fundraising time. It's really good. 8y
bmsddk @Blueberry Oooh, that's very good to know, thank you! 8y

Are you a fan of delicious reads? I was excited when they published Psych books, which turned out to be so fun!!! Shawn and Gus have an incredible (and weird), tighter than peanut butter and blueberry jelly (or, tighter than family...I've heard it both ways) friendship 🍍🍍🍍 ~ #Day18 #FavoriteFriendships #FavouriteFriendships #booktober #bookphotochallenge ~ @RealLifeReading

Eyelit I didn't know there was a series of books from the show. Will need to find some! Love Shawn & Gus! 🍍🍍🍍 8y
bmsddk @Eyelit Nice to find a fellow Psych-o🍍😄 It's a great way to spend more time with these characters. What are some of your favourite episodes? There's also this book that's hilarious 8y

Eyelit I have a hard time pinpointing faves cause the series as a whole was just too much fun! I need to do a rewatch one of these days! Thanks for the heads up on the guide book - will check out for sure! 8y
DGRachel @bmsddk It was such a different show, that I don't think I've seen anything to really compare. 8y

Strange scifi somehow capturing readers' curiosity! Alternating viewpoints unfold the plot's three layers. Prose flows smoothly even during bursts of very soft science dialogue. Expected short story plot twists may or may not surprise. Challenged perspectives and optimistic speculation transform what could be cliché into humorous, albeit entirely unrealistic, food-for-thought. Recommended for social commentary scifi fans seeking a quick fun read ☺

Fun activity: replace some/all of the characters with yo-yos, then see what happens. I still don't think this story would change or get twistier! The mark of an edge-of-your-seat mystery -- dubbing it the yo-yo character meter 😆 Saying no more on that to avoid spoilers, haha. ~ I know yo-yos weren't invented in the 90s, but they certainly made a huge comeback then! ~ #Day17 #90sToyInBookForm #octphotochallenge #bookphotochallenge ~ @LibrarianRyan

[DELETED] 2852984487 I have read nearly every #StarWars book out there, both Legends and Canon. I have also read lots of #StarTrek books. 8y
[DELETED] 2852984487 However, I have not read the children's #StarWars books. 8y
bmsddk @RStorey Awesome!!! 👏👏👏 I've read well over a hundred EU/Legends (adult and kids), and still have many left to get through! Haven't started any of the new Canon yet, but they're on my TBR list. I chose that The Last of the Jedi cover because it was one of the few with a good picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi (on my top Star Wars characters list) ☺ What are some of your favourite Star Wars series? 8y
See All 24 Comments
bmsddk @RStorey The Star Trek books are fun 😀 A bit like healthy brain candy! What Star Trek series have you read the most in? 8y
[DELETED] 2852984487 @bmsddk Favorite #StarWars series is the Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire) by Timothy Zahn. I also really enjoyed the Darth Bane trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn. 8y
Eyelit How do you like the color me Jane coloring book? 8y
[DELETED] 2852984487 @bmsddk Favorite #StarTrek series is TNG. Favorite book is Imzadi. 8y
lilredhen TNG, DS9, LOTR, Lunar Chronicles, Six of Crows. Don't ask me to pick my fave of each series, it's hard enough picking favorite fandoms lol 8y
bmsddk @Eyelit That colouring book is actually on our TBR (er... to be coloured) list ☺ The current Austen one is tagged. It's a fun one; my Mom is really enjoying it! 8y
bmsddk @RStorey Those are great Star Wars and Star Trek books! 8y
bmsddk @lilredhen Hahaha, it is so hard 😅 What are some elements you like in those fandoms? 8y
bmsddk @Eyelit Are there any literary colouring books you recommend? 8y
Eyelit I have coloring books for tv shows (doctor who and Sherlock so far - but Firefly and Buffy will be out soonish)... and I only have one literary coloring book and it's for Locke & Key. It's all right. I want the Jane Austen one and I've seen a Poe one floating around 😃 8y
lilredhen Next Gen, l like the optimism and rosy outlook they have-even when lousy things happen, they are still an optimistic bunch. DS9 is interesting for its exploration of religion and racism (look deep, you'll see it) 8y
lilredhen LOTR was a bedtime story my mom read to us (yes, a bedtime story; it's one of the first I remember her reading to us) and I love the down to earth nature of the hobbits, their quiet and simple lifestyle and the contrast with the more "advanced" races 8y
lilredhen Lunar Chronicles-love the riffs on fairy tales. I love fairy tales, and I love a good retelling. Six of Crows-they aren't heroes, and they don't pretend to be. They are flawed, but their stories are so rich and so understandable that I love them for how they turned out. 8y
lilredhen As far as those who read them and love them I find that the Star Trek fans are, for the most part, optimists with a forward thinking perspective. LOTR readers I know are deep thinkers-they read and re read the books, picking something wonderfully new out each time-and they also favor a quieter way of life for the most part. 8y
lilredhen Lunar Chronicles and Six of Crows-I haven't met a lot of people who have read them outside of Litsy, and I think y'all are just awesome lol. 8y
bmsddk @lilredhen One of the primary reasons I love DS9 is how tastefully provocative it is! They seemed to address some meatier issues more head-on than the other series did. Did not end all those episodes as hopefully as with TNG, but almost always thinking. I can imagine it would be fun to have LOTR read out loud to you; it would bring to life all the lyrical description 😀 8y
bmsddk @lilredhen I made my sister and Mom read Lunar Chronicles and Six of Crows (they loved both), but other than them, I've also not met people outside of Litsy who have read them 😂 Last year someone asked me why I was counting down to Nov. 10, and they gave me a weird look when I told then it was for Winter's release date 😜 You guys are great with understanding things like that! 8y
bmsddk @lilredhen Lunar Chronicles was a fun mildly scifi retelling with several thematic and character layers. What other fairy tale retellings do you enjoy? I loved the growth of our anti-heroes in Six of Crows, and the writing quality is sharp! Those are interesting observations about personalities in different fandoms. 8y
lilredhen @bmsddk Robin McKinley has a whole slew of fairy tale retellings that I love-Spindle's End, Deerskin, Beauty and Rose Daughter, as well as quite a few short stories. Jessica Day George has some great retellings, too, starting with the Twelve Dancing Princesses and going from there. 8y
lilredhen And yes, LOTR read aloud is a completely different thing, especially if the reader hits a good cadence. 8y
bmsddk @lilredhen Thanks for the spinoff suggestions! They sound very interesting and are going on the TBR list. @Eyelit I just told my Mom about those coloring books you mentioned -- she was so excited, she thinks she's set for life with all the options out there. Thanks for sharing! 8y

Going with Han Solo today, because I'm very curious how they're going to rewrite his backstory in the movie 😅🙈 ~ Fellow Star Wars fans: excited or nervous?? ~ #Day15 #StarWars #octphotochallenge #bookphotochallenge ~ @LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan A little nervous. Plus to see someone else take over the role. I know I'll see it but ... 8y
bmsddk @LibrarianRyan Agreed, haha. I'm a bit concerned that they keep touting it as the story of a young Han Solo, as he was already quite young in A New Hope -- could get in the way of providing interesting fresh content (though I'd also be happy if they stuck to the original expanded universe). What did you think of the new movie? 8y

I'm diving into the works of Neil Gaiman after the raving reviews here on Litsy! He has so many books, so I'm not sure where to start. Happy endings are preferred these days, and I don't usually like horror, but these are flexible. So fellow #Littens, what do you recommend??

Thank you!

Currently reading The Sleeper and the Spindle as my first illustrated novel of his (thanks for the rec @ABookishPixie 😀), and will randomly pick a graphic novel.

Abby-J You should read American Gods first. It's generally accepted as his best work, so if you are going to like a Neil Gaiman book, its probably going to be that one. 8y
LibrarianRyan I would say American Gods or Stardust. 8y
josie281 Read American Gods before the tv series starts next year. 8y

Bookworm54 The only ones I have read so far are The Graveyard Book and Stardust. Both are amazing. I haven't yet read Neverwhere but I have heard nothing but good things. It's just sitting on my shelf waiting for its turn! 8y
Humanatea American Gods is incredible, but Good Omens is my personal fav to recommend first-timers. It's more outrageously funny than his other books thanks to Terry Pratchett 8y
Leniverse Good Omens was my introduction to Neil Gaiman. It's a good place to start. Then maybe move on to Stardust (and then watch the movie adaptation which is brilliant!) You might want to wait a bit with Coraline and The Ocean at the End of the Lane if you want non-horror happiness. The Graveyard Book (novel and graphic novel) and American Gods is a must read at some point though. Can't help with the short stories. About to start my first one myself. 8y
bmsddk @Abby-J @LibrarianRyan @Josie281 American Gods sounds interesting, thank you! 8y
bmsddk @LibrarianRyan Love the title Stardust ☄ @Bookworm54 Would you recommend the novel out graphic novel version of The Graveyard Book first? 8y
bmsddk @Humanatea @Leniverse Very helpful details! I like how Good Omens has the humor twist. Will wait on Coraline and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. @Leniverse Curious to know how the short story collection goes ☺ 8y
Bookworm54 Personally I have the novel, and although I haven't read the graphic novel the prose would definitely work well in that format. So either would work ☺️ With Good Omens, I struggled as it is written in collaboration with Terry Pratchett. It felt very much like Pratchett, and writing isn't to my taste. So although people love it, it may be better to read one by Gaiman himself too to get a better idea of his style :) 8y
samalot I read Good Omens first and fell head over heels, but The Graveyard Book novel would also be a great starting point. Trigger Warning was very fun and spooky if you'd rather start with short stories. 8y
LibrarianRyan I must be one of the very few people who didn't care for The Graveyard book. I know it's award winning and all, but I just thought ehh 8y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Ah, thanks for the heads up about Good Omens! @samalot Thank you for the tips! Is Trigger Warning *very* spooky in your opinion? @LibrarianRyan I appreciate the different perspective! What about it was ehh to you? 8y
samalot @bmsddk More spooky atmosphere than anything truly frightening. There's also a shorty about David Bowie and one about Dr. Who, so not just creepies. I listened to the audio and his voice is very soothing :) 8y
bmsddk @samalot Really appreciate it, that sounds like a fun read (and the Whovian in me is excited 😄)! 8y
Bklover So glad you asked this- I just started American Gods. Was interesting to see the suggestions. 8y
Wannabe_Quijote I don't think you can beat American Gods 8y
bmsddk @Bklover Curious to know your thoughts on it! @FUNdamental Thanks for the insight ☺ 8y
Linsy @bmsddk That's the only one I've read! I'm excited to see your reviews. I might need to read more Neil Gaiman. 8y
moranadatter I would say start with Neverwhere. It's my favorite. I wouldn't start with American Gods. I think it is on a lot of people's minds because of the upcoming tv series, but it's not his most accessible work. 8y
moranadatter I agree with @Leniverse that Good Omens and Stardust are also good introductions to Gaiman. 8y
Leniverse @kmdartist It's been so long since I read Neverwhere, I remember I liked it, but I don't recall enough to feel safe recommending it. I need to read it again! I should do a Gaiman marathon. Just sit in a pile of his books and feast. 8y
moranadatter @Leniverse That sounds fun! There are a few I have forgotten and some I haven't yet read. 8y
bmsddk @kmdartist Ah, good to know, thanks! What makes American Gods a bit less accessible than his others? 8y
moranadatter @bmsddk It's longer, denser, and the plot moves more slowly; it's complicated with side plots. It is a fantastic book and a must read, but I wouldn't start with it unless you prefer a slower-moving, more complicated story. 8y
bmsddk @kmdartist That makes sense. I love complicated stories, but it's easier to get through a slow-paced novel once already familiar with the author. Thank you! 8y
bmsddk @ABookishPixie It was a great recommend, thanks 😄 Very interesting take on the two fairytales. I'll be posting my review on it for one of the upcoming challenge days! 8y
Leniverse @FUNdamental According to my husband you can beat American Gods. He says Anansi Boys is even better. I haven't read that yet, so I have to withhold judgment! 8y
Leniverse @bmsddk As for the Graveyard Book, I read the novel before the graphic novel and that worked well for me. First the plot details, then the plot again with illustrations. Now I just a film/TV adaptation! (All of Gaiman's work should come in book, graphic novel, movie, and audio book narrated by Neil himself.) 8y
bmsddk @Leniverse What did he like about Anansi Boys? A reading marathon sounds great, even better with food 😄 8y
bmsddk @Leniverse Thanks for the approach advice with The Graveyard Book! It's incredible how a story can be that adaptable without compromise 8y
Leniverse He can't really say much without spoilers. But you need to read American Gods before Anansi Boys anyway. Not that it's a sequel, but it's the same mythos/setting and you meet Anansi Sr. in American Gods. 8y
Wannabe_Quijote @Leniverse And I haven't read Anansi Boys. But it's on my TBR! 8y
bmsddk @Leniverse @FUNdamental Order of reading noted, thanks! 8y
