This early work by Philip K. Dick was originally published in 1953 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Second Variety' is a short story about the aftermath of a nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United Nations. Philip Kindred Dick was born on December 16 1928, in Chicago, Illinois. Dick and his family moved to the Bay Area of San Francisco when he was young, and later on to Washington DC following his parents divorce. Dick attended Elementary school and then a Quaker school before the family moved back to California. It was around this time that Dick began to take an active interest in the science fiction genre, reading his first magazine Stirring Science Stories, at age twelve. Dick married five times between 1959 and 1973, and had three children. He sold his first story in 1951 and from that point on he wrote full-time, selling his first novel in 1955. In addition to 44 published novels, Dick wrote an estimated 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. In addition to 44 published novels, Dick wrote an estimated 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. After his death, many of his stories made the transition to the big screen, with blockbuster films such as Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report being based on his works.

ljuliel Is that a new hashtag or challenge in here ? The 5 word review ? I like that idea, as I ALWAYS run out of space when doing a review. I have to chop words out and scrunch them together so they fit. 5y
bibliobliss @ljuliel It might be!! I just didn't want to write a full review for this one Lol 😉 Not sure if it's a hashtag or challenge but it probably should be 5y
ljuliel I like it. I think it‘d be fun to try. Maybe I‘ll do that with my next review. Thanks for the idea 😊 5y

Read on #SerialReader but wanted to know how it resolved so badly that I read the last 3 issues in one day, with a migraine! Had to stay with may head laying flat on the pillow and brightness turned all the way down, but it was worth it. This was my first Philip K. Dick, but it guarantted won't be my last!

Creadnorthey I too had a hard time holding out- but I do so like the app‘s delivery! And PKD just has such lovely paranoid cool! 7y

This was a good short story/novella to break up #24in48 a bit. Reading this felt particularly timely given the fact that I've been listening to the Utopia and Terror in the 20th Century Great Course. Written in the 1950s about the effects of nuclear fallout brought on by the Russians and the creation of machines to carry on warfare while the UN is safe on the moon, it's definitely influenced by the political climate of the day.

Just finished on @SerialReader. Overall, I enjoyed it. More accessible than a lot of PKD's work, but its awesomeness is diminished by predictability.

I've been working a ridiculous number of hours on Serial Reader for Android, so I have robots on the brain. As in, wouldn't it be great to have a robot do things like coding for me?

Robots take over the fighting of wars in this Philip K Dick scifi short story. Turns out that's not such a good idea, as the robots start thinking for themselves. Guess it's back to coding for me...

MrBook 😂👍🏻 8y
Twocougs Since you have robots on the brain, you should read Sleeping Giants! 😀 don't work too hard! 8y
