Legends & Lattes: A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes | Travis Baldree
308 posts | 251 read | 6 reading | 88 to read
High Fantasy with a double-shot of self-reinventionWorn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior's life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune's shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve.A hot cup of fantasy slice-of-life with a dollop of romantic froth.

This was cute but I didn‘t love it that much. It was just okay for me. I know a lot of people loved this one, but I don‘t know if I would continue through the series. It was fun for one book but not sure if I want to go to the next one.

marleed I feel like I should have left this series as a first book stand alone, as well. 2w

This was exactly what I expected from a book described as high fantasy, low stakes.
The book is cosy and the friendships sweet.
And I would very much like to visit this coffee shop and eat all the pastries!

Viv chose to retire from being a barbarian, & decided to pursue her dream of a coffee shop. W/ unwelcome figures from her past, a protection racket trying to extort her, & a succubus looking for a job, her retirement may not be as calm as she wanted.

This was charming! I loved all the descriptions of food (Thimble was my fave), the building of community, & the story of choosing to reinvent yourself. I did want more w/ the Madrigal. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

So cute! Not my normal thing, but having a book that was pure fluff really is what my mind needed. I work at a coffee shop, so it was really lovely seeing fictional characters love this line of work.

This was so far outside my comfort zone and, to be honest, I‘m so mad I haven‘t tried cozy high fantasy before. This was so fun! Amazing characters, good story, and definitely like nothing else I‘ve read before (which is refreshing!). It isn‘t necessarily a favorite genre now but it definitely will be something I pick up when I need a change of pace. And I‘ll definitely read the next book in the series! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

LiteraryinPA I felt exactly the same! I never read high fantasy but really loved this book and its sequel. Also just want to mention that Baldree narrating his books for the audio is a delight! 3mo

This is my first BS/DS doubleheader! This series received so much Litsy love that I‘d be amiss not to add it to my TBR. I finally prioritized these warm-hugs-in-book-form and read them back-to-back. They are both cute as a bug‘s ear, I liked both equally, and perfect when you yearn for a couple days of stress-free reading.

marleed @Cupcake12 oh same here. I was giddy with excitement when I realized I could use both my bookspin and my DoubleSpin categories to read both books! Btw, the second book is a prequel but both are stand alone plots so it doesn‘t really matter if book-recall fades in the time it gets from one book to the next. 7mo

Had a great reading month! 17 books read and I enjoyed them all! I have to say my favorite was the tagged book, because I was very pleasantly surprised! I‘m not really a fantasy girl, and I caved because I saw all the love it was getting here on Litsy. I saw a recommendation for this one somewhere (maybe on this site) & although it is outside my normal genres I requested it from the library. When I realized I had not got to it and it was due soon, I almost skipped reading it. I am glad I didn't as I found it delightful, filled with great characters, humor and even a great moral lesson. Fair warning though - it will make you want baked goods. Now I need to find the next one in the series. 4.5/5

LiteraryinPA I‘m glad you liked it! It was out of my normal genre too but I found it totally delightful. 💗💗 8mo

What a fun romp this was! High fantasy meets cozy, with a little romance. Viv is an Orc who is done with the bounty life and is looking to settle down. She wants to open a coffee shop - the first one in the city of Thune. She meets a quirky, lovable cast of characters along the way. Funny, hopeful, sweet. This is fantastic on audio - Travis Baldree is a voice talent turned author and voices his own book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

I started this one on audio a couple of days ago. I got attached to the characters in the prequel, so I‘m hoping I didn‘t ruin my experience with this book by reading that one first. This one takes place several decades later. It‘s fun so far and the narration is excellent. The author is a voice talent and lends his voice to his own work with these books. ❤️📚🎧

Well, if I‘m not allowed to get up, I may as well finish a book!

I enjoyed this, though I didn‘t love it as much as I hoped. It was a fun, pleasant read. It did hit one of my pet peeves a couple times (it seems all the books I‘m reading right now are doing that). I liked all the characters. I will be reading the prequel.

RaeLovesToRead Hello kitty! I'm curious to know which pet peeve! 😅 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @RaeLovesToRead One I encounter frequently and struggle to describe… it‘s when you‘re in a character‘s POV, and they think or obviously know something, but the reader doesn‘t get to know what that is. Like “suddenly, she knew the answer” but I don‘t get to know the answer for pages, if ever. Some authors pull it off OK (it isn‘t bothering me as much with Becky Chambers), but usually it drives me nuts. 9mo

I‘ve seen so much love for this book, and though this genre is definitely not my usual read, I had a bit of FOMO. Then, when it was on @LiteraryinLawrence ‘s #AuldLangSpine list, I knew I had to try it. And, I really liked it! Totally not what I was expecting! I loved how Viv rebuilds her life through the cafe. My mouth watered over the treats Thimble bakes.

- The strength of the book are the characters, definitely. And I liked the diversity. Especially Thimble!
Atmosphere/Setting: - Nicely done world making and just a hint of magical stuff.
Well written and easy to read. Not much of a plot, but the story moves ahead anyway I did love how the characters come together, despite Viv at times.
