The Complete Novels of Jane Austen
The Complete Novels of Jane Austen | Jane Austen
520 posts | 110 read | 8 reading | 51 to read
Jane Austen is without question, one of England's most enduring and skilled novelists. With her wit, social precision, and unerring ability to create some of literature's most charismatic and believable heroines, she mesmerises her readers as much today as when her novels were first published.Whether it is her sharp, ironic gaze at the Gothic genre invoked by the adventures of Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey; the diffident and much put-upon Fanny Price struggling to cope with her emotions in Mansfield Park; her delightfully paced comedy of manners and the machinations of the sisters Elinor and Marianne in Sense and Sensibility; the quiet strength of Anne Elliot in Persuasion succeeding in a world designed to subjugate her very existence; and Emma - 'a heroine whom no one but myself will like' teased Austen - yet another irresistible character on fire with imagination and foresight. Indeed not unlike her renowned creator.Jane Austen is as sure-footed in her steps through society's whirlpools of convention and prosaic mores as she is in her sometimes restrained but ever precise and enduring prose.

If you want to stick to Litsy only just ignore.

I've dusted off the #PemberLittens Facebook Group to share a video of #JaneAustenThenAndNow Book Club https://www.facebook.com/share/19WBUhK2kj/

Also on Threads. https://bit.ly/3AkVnvQ

And Instagram. https://bit.ly/3Yzu8pq

Instagram is fun because my dear friend Claire from 🇬🇧 https://bit.ly/4eihalH joins in there with some amazing posts. Her mum made my Jane doll on the shelf behind me.

December 16, 2025 is 250 Anniversary of Jane Austen's Birth. I wanted to do something special for #JaneAdjacent Book Club.

Thought to harken back to beginnings of Pemberlittens when @sprainedbrain brought us together to read Jane Austen.

One month will read Original. Next you choose a retelling, graphic novel, or watch a movie. Tag @Crinoline_Laphroaig #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow so we can find your posts.

Welcome to January 2024 #AuthorAMonth readers! Time to pull out our Jane Austen books. What are you planning to read?

#AuthorAMonth is a no-pressure, no-commitment Litsy challenge. The goal is to celebrate the works of a particular author each month. Authors were chosen through polls by Litsy participants. Read as many as you like, skip months when needed, it's entirely up to you!

There's an instagram account that I follow who takes old paintings and sculptures to recreate famous figures to imagine what they actually looked like. She just posted this one of Jane Austen, which I figured the #pemberlittens would find interesting. Based on the only drawing of Jane we have.
Check out the whole reel to see the process, it's pretty cool ☺️

One of my favorite self care things to do is to make myself a proper tea. I like all types in all ways and usually with a little treat. One of my daughters bought me this super cool teapot recently. The open book on top has the 1st words of Pride & Prejudice. This really is just perfect on all counts. I have more than a couple teapots and vintage teacups in my collection. This is my new favorite and will live next to my Jane Austen Chilterns.

What are some first lines in books you‘ve read that have been brilliant?
I‘m trying to come up with catchy quotes to pique student interest in reading but I am up against cell phones and social media here, so Jane Austen ain‘t cutting it.

#Pemberlittens @sprainedbrain
Time for #whiskeyandcontemplation of my rankings.

6️⃣ Sense and Sensibility
5️⃣ Mansfield Park
4️⃣ Emma
3️⃣ Persuasion
2️⃣ Northanger Abbey
1️⃣ Pride and Prejudice

I'll put my reasons in the comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 6. Sense and Sensibility.
Colonel Brandon is such a good man. He deserves better than Marianne Dashwood and her Sensibilities. Her histrionics wear me out.
3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5. Mansfield Park
For the longest time it was my least favorite. I think the reason teenage me didn't like it was the verbal abuse and neglect Fanny suffered just hit to close to home. Having survived and thrived my childhood I can now appreciate Fanny. #musingsonmansfield
3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4. Emma
I've always described Emma as a loveable snob. NYTimes article called 'Jane Austen's Guide to Alzheimer‘s' changed my perspective. It pointed out that "The novel asserts that Emma had little to distress or vex her, yet describes many distressing and vexing events. Emma is parenting her parent and has been doing so for quite some time."
#emmaeveryday
3y
See All 12 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3. Persuasion
Younger me didn't get it's quiet beauty. The sadness of having missed out on love and getting a 2nd chance at happiness.
#pagesofpersuasion
3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 2. Northanger Abbey
I love it's satire and snarky dialogue buy mostly I love it for Henry Tilney. He's no quiet brooding character like Darcy, Brandon, or Wentworth. His sunny disposition, but serious when he needs to be, makes him my favorite Austen hero. And he utters my favorite Austen quote: "The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid." #henrytilney?
3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 1. Pride and Prejudice
Elizabeth Bennet taught 16 year old me the importance of being an #ObstinateHeadstrongGirl. 😊
3y
Andrea313 I love your reasoning! I've been grappling with how I'd rank these now that I've re-read them all and am still struggling! There's so much to love, how can I choose? But you've inspired me to try again. 3y
TiredLibrarian @Crinoline_Laphroaig Very interesting reasoning. I like the insight into Emma, too: never looked at it that way. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrea313 I love a good list! 3y
CaramelLunacy Love the FunkoPop! I agree that Henry Tilney's charms oft go underappreciated. 3y
