This beautiful MG novel was the perfect way to kick off my #AuldLangSpine reading. The story follows one kid who thinks she messed everything up—and fills in the context as the events of one evening unfold. There‘s such wonderful emotional depth here. Add a small community of found family (including dogs, cat, and seagull) a dash of magic, and gorgeous illustrations: this is definitely a pick.

BarbaraJean I finished this the first week in January, but with travel and visiting family, my Litsy posting has been so scattered! Trying to catch up a bit now. 10mo
monalyisha I thought the attention paid to the adult characters was so careful and tender (without straying away from the fact that MG readers are the intended audience). Written with such a deft hand. 9mo
BarbaraJean @monalyisha Yes! It‘s so impressive how the author balances that attention to young readers without sacrificing the depth of the adult characters and their difficult, complicated backstories. 9mo

After spending time with my #ALSpine list and my library‘s catalog, I‘ve picked the above books for my January TBR. I‘ll be out of town for 2 weeks starting the 6th, so I‘ve been looking at digital version availability! My plan is to start the year with Keeper (a library print copy is in transit to me), then switch to digital for the others as they become available. But there are several others I‘ll build into my reading for the rest of the year!

JamieArc I Hope you like Saltus! It was on my #ALSpine list that I gave to @monalyisha and was happy she passed it along on her list this year! 10mo
monalyisha @JamieArc @BarbaraJean Saltus was my favorite fiction book this year! Hands down. An excellent choice. ✨ 10mo
monalyisha @BarbaraJean I‘m happy so much nonfiction made it onto your shortlist! I truly loved each one of these so much. Excited to find out what you think of them! 10mo
BarbaraJean @JamieArc I love how so many Auld Lang Spine recs go from list to list each year!! @monalyisha All of the nonfiction sounded so good!! And these were more quickly available from the library, as well (digitally, anyway). The Deep (the audiobook!), True Biz, and The Sentence are also on my holds list, but it doesn't look like I'll get to the front of the line for those until February. 10mo

YA. When Nailer and Pima find a ship after a storm, all they can think about is the scavenge for wealth. Instead, they find a human who changes their view of life, making them the richer for it, but not before they learn that Ship Breaker and Swanks can work together without fear and hatred.

Read for my Young at Heart Book Club. It was my 2nd time reading, a decade later, and I loved it even more than I did the first time around (which was quite a lot to begin with!).

Gorgeous, tender writing; vivid small town/island setting; with found family, two lovable dogs, LGBTQ+ characters, & a dash of mer-mythology.

A perfect MG novel. Also great for gentle-hearted grown-ups who are doing their best, despite life‘s hardships, to stay soft.

I read this book to prep myself for our family reunion in Rosemary Beach and I found the book to be incredibly readable and fascinating. Definitely recommend if you enjoy history!

Now that the sidewalks are covered in yuck, here's some shots from when I walked into Boston for the first time since last March to return my library book. I took my sweet time with this book. I wasn't familiar with this part of America, nevermind what it was like there in 18th century. But I learned a lot and appreciated the different perspectives of the author's subjects.

Chrissyreadit @Cosmos_Moon yes- parts of the state are beautiful! But sometimes I feel like I fit in here the way Cousin Marilyn fit in with the Munsters. 🤣 4y
VeganCleopatra I hear ya! I moved from Philly to Colorado years ago and still feel it. 4y
revenge4porgy Nope. I‘m living in California since 1986, grew up in New Jersey. 4y
revenge4porgy The book Many Waters by Madeline L‘Engle comes to mind. Is anyone else paying themselves $1 for every book they have read? By the end of the year(12/31/2020) I should have close to $500. 4y
revenge4porgy I‘m grateful for my family and my Litten family. I tag Vegan Cleopatra. 😎 4y
Chrissyreadit @revenge4porgy that‘s funny! I just buy more books, and sometimes I do not wait until I‘m finished. 4y
revenge4porgy Who says I can‘t multitask? Right now, I‘m in the middle of two books. 4y

DuVal brings attention to a little-known (at least to me) aspect of the Revolutionary era: events in the area that surrounds the Gulf of Mexico. She also covers the involvement of diverse types of people: Native-Americans tribes, the slave Petit Jean, negotiator Alexander McGillivray who was Scots-Creek, and others. Sometimes I‘d lose the thread of the overall history when she‘d zoom into one of these individuals; but overall enlightening.

This kind of reminds me of now 😓. Especially the last few words here.

Not shown here is the passage about smallpox inoculation and how controversial it was at that time — Washington insisted his troops be inoculated even if they tried to resist. However, the Creeks didn‘t have access to inoculations.

This book is an overview of the area around North America‘s Gulf of Mexico during the Revolutionary era.

(Pages 165 and 166 of this book).

muscogulus Good book! The Revolutionary War on the Gulf Coast has gotten too little attention. This book gives the big picture while placing the lives of specific men and women in the foreground. Everyone in the Gulf States should read at least some of it, IMO. 5y
ValerieAndBooks @muscogulus it‘s an aspect of the Revolutionary war that I know little about. I‘m not from one of the Gulf states but still glad I picked this up. I live near Philadelphia so it‘s all about the Founding Fathers and early battles up here 😆. 5y
muscogulus Been meaning to send a copy to a friend from Pensacola who‘s relocated to Boston. Sent her a short Revolution history as a refresher on Boston lore. But she ought to know her hometown was significant too. 5y
ValerieAndBooks @muscogulus I think that‘s a great idea. So she can hold her own if she needs to 😊. I love Boston and its history but obviously a lot more also happened elsewhere. 5y
