Fun little comedy, even if predicable. 🧔 Beards are a theme. 😉
Quick listen on YouTube with an excellent narrator. I just discovered his channel - “Bitesized Audio Classics.” https://youtu.be/gRRXJdoEfFo?si=vNJVK703Kzur6V0l

“But Hester, I‘m years older than you are. You can‘t really—“
“That is—if you want me,” said Hester with sudden doubt.
“Oh, I want you!” said Arthur Calgary.

I read a lot of Anthony Trollope novels a few decades ago but had not heard of this surprisingly short (especially for AT) holiday tale! Honestly, it struck me as what the 1893 version of a comfortably predictable but charmingly written sit-com episode would be!
Delightful!
Of late, I have been drawn to more “literary” or “challenging” books and this one certainly challenged me! These stories are spare and minimalist and require work of the reader. All of them deal with the lives and experiences of women and the way they interact with the world, in ways both big and small. While some of the stories were opaque in their meaning, I think this is a book that would be served well by being re-read.
I‘m learning Penelope Fitzgerald was a special writer. Fell in love with The Blue Flower earlier this year, and have now read this one - a bad good marriage in 1950‘s Florence with a doctor too rational to acknowledge his emotions. Ok, that‘s humble. Now hand it over to Penelope and her backhanded, almost absurd, striking lines. 🥰

This is imprinted on my mind, body, and soul 💚
What nature poems speak to you?
All the feelings of a big classic novel. This is old-fashioned storytelling, complete with lush prose, layers of characterisation, and a context that lives as much as the characters do. A really immersive story about struggles of class, race, sexuality, and family in post-war Britain. I wish I‘d been able to submerge myself in this more completely, a drawn out reading let me miss a bit of nuance I‘m sure. An excellent read.
Enjoying a little rain. I‘ve been hiding from the world in this 14th-century text.
