ElizaMarie Ooo -- things are happening ---- #FingersCrossed it continues! Also, I hope Maggie annoys Tom with praise of Phil. 6d
TheAromaofBooks At least it feels like they are acting like regular children instead of psychopaths now 😂 6d
mcctrish Thank god he stabbed himself @AllDebooks I am struggling 6d
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks 🤣🤣🤣 6d
mcctrish @dabbe is it the time period? I did care but it‘s getting harder 6d
dabbe @mcctrish Maybe. It's also the absence again of a plot. I mean, it's a bildungsroman about Maggie and Tom growing up, but have a driving plot line, please! 🤣 5d
julieclair @ElizaMarie You called it! Flesh wound! 🎯 5d
julieclair @dabbe @mcctrish @ElizaMarie At least the lack of a plot is preventing me being tempted to read ahead. 🤣🤣😂 5d
dabbe @julieclair And if you're like me, I count the pages before I read, and I happily rejoice if it's less than 10 pages! 🤣😍🤣 5d
eeclayton @dabbe same 😂 5d
Leftcoastzen @julieclair 😂no temptation to read ahead #gotplot 5d
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair Oh yeah, this isn‘t like The Woman in White where it was so hard to stop at the end of each section! 5d
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly Full confession: I often didn‘t stop at the end of each section with Woman in White. Totally impossible. 3d
BarkingMadRead @julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly I 💯 read ahead for Woman in White 3d

ElizaMarie Not that I want something bad to happen -- but... something happening might be cool, so #FingersCrossed someone gets a little flesh wound? 7d
Clare-Dragonfly I am worried that someone will get hurt! 6d
eeclayton @ElizaMarie I agree. While I enjoy the character studies, I would love for something to happen already. 6d
ElizaMarie @eeclayton YES!!! I am glad I am not the only one! 6d
Leftcoastzen Made me think of my parents “ hey put that down, you‘ll poke your eye out!” Or in this case , cut your arm off ? Funny/not funny 6d
mcctrish @ElizaMarie while I might have said “oh FFS Mr Poulter that was stupid” you aren‘t wrong about wanting to have something happen. @Bookwormjillk can‘t see this going right 6d
julieclair I have visions of Maggie playing with the sword… 😳 5d

Julsmarshall Oof. I applaud her standing up for what is true and right. (edited) 3mo
ncsufoxes I hope they listen to her. As a mom of an Autistic child this man needs to stay far away from DHHS. I fear what his views (& possible actions) will do to the Autistic community. As well as countless other families & individuals that utilize services that fall under DHHS. 3mo

I may be a bit premature, but this is Skye, a rescue cat we've applied to re-home. We met her today at her foster home, now we have to wait for the animal shelter to do their checks and give their approval. Hopefully, we can bring her home in about a week or so 🤞😺

BookNAround Aw. She‘s a beauty! 3mo
quietlycuriouskate She is gorgeous (and reminds me of my lovely Seamus, nearly 30 years ago). I am so envious, and also sending best wishes that she is home with you soon. 😻 3mo
bibliothecarivs ❤️ Looks like our Dusty 🙂 3mo
Bookwomble @Aims42 @TheBookHippie @Librarybelle @dabbe @Deblovestoread @BookNAround Thank you for your good wishes 😺 I had a call from the shelter after posting, and we're fixed for concluding arrangements over the next few days! 😁 3mo
Bookwomble @quietlycuriouskate I'm happy to have reminded you of your beloved Seamus 😊 Our pets live in us longer than they are with us ❤️ 3mo
Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs Ahh, she's in good company, then! 😊😺 3mo
Librarybelle Wonderful news! 3mo
Deblovestoread Yay! Also love the name Skye. When my daughter was young we got an English Springer Spaniel that she named Andre Skye. A very pompous name for a very goofy dog. She had a bit of a crush on Andre Agassi at the time and Skye was his sire‘s name. (edited) 3mo
TheBookgeekFrau Good luck to you and Skye!! 🤞🏼🍀🤞🏼🍀 3mo
Bookwomble @Deblovestoread Skye is the name we're inheriting with the cat, and while I could change it, I do like it, and somehow it seems wrong to rename. Despite my generally scientific view of the universe, I have a felt-sense of the numinosity of names and, magical thinking though it may be, I'm reluctant to change it without the cat's permission, which, let's face it, I'm not going to get! 😄 Andre Skye is an excellent dog name, goofy or not! 🐶❤️ 3mo
Bookwomble @TheBookgeekFrau Thank you 😺 3mo

My all-time favorite team…Giants. But my husband and I root for the Broncos now that we live in CO. We usually just watch at home…the two of us. And we have a Super Bowl Party every year. We are also big University of Michigan fans (we have season tix) and have our crowd of Michigan friends.

Thanks for tagging me @KadaGul …I am tagging @UwannaPublishme my fellow football fan!

#GridironGab

KadaGul @AmyG, Were you happy or disappointed with Russell Wilson's trade? I saw it's the Giant's 100th year. 🥳 7mo
AmyG Wilson needed to go. He just wasn‘t the right fit. You need to win games. @KadaGul Curious to see what Nix does this season. Today wasn‘t great but we‘ll see. 🤞🏻 (edited) 7mo
KadaGul @AmyG Oh no, for Nix. I'll keep my fingers crossed. The Bears had a great game today, but let's hope they keep the momentum going. #FingersCrossed 7mo
AmyG Go Bears! The Lions won in OT…so there‘s that! 7mo

jenniferw88 I love that Shardlake is disabled - especially for this time period, as it's not something I see very much of, even in contemporary fiction (but then I'm probably not reading the right type of books where this would be common). 9mo
LiseWorks Everyone is terrified of losing their status. I feel bad for Shardlake for having to work for Cromwell. I was sad that he was sore all the time. There are no meds to help him at this time. I felt bad for Mark because he had to marry a girl fit for his status and not for love. 9mo
The_Book_Ninja Now the dust has settled…it was OK, I feel I enjoyed it more now a few weeks have gone by. But I‘m not in a rush to read the next one. I didn‘t fall in love with any of the characters. Mark started out interesting but ended up being wet 9mo
See All 18 Comments
Librarybelle I really enjoyed this. Sansom‘s writing really showcases the tensions of the time. The fact that Shardlake not only battles the political climate but his own physical disabilities makes for a very interesting, immersive story. 9mo
Daisey I thoroughly enjoyed this reread. I think part of that is my appreciation for the series though. I actually read Dark Fire first years ago and then went back to this one. I‘m really looking forward to rereading it as I think I did like it even more. 9mo
Mollyanna I enjoyed the novel. I think Sansom does a great job of setting the scene, using the time period and even nature to evoke tension and emotion. Shardlake is a great character. He is flawed, but I appreciate that. Looking forward to the next book. 9mo
OutsmartYourShelf I thought it was OK but it didn't bowl me over or anything. I've read better historical mysteries in respect of immersing the reader in the historical time period, but I never judge solely on the first book so looking forward to the second. 9mo
Deblovestoread I really enjoyed being in this time period again and I loved getting to know Shardlake. 9mo
dabbe I read this years ago (loved it) but couldn't believe this time that I couldn't remember “whodunnit.“ 🤪 Also, I liked Mark and his snarkiness less this time around. I adore Shardlake and all of his frailties and flaws, and I love that he willingly admits them as he is not only our Sherlock but our Watson as well. To those who didn't like it so much, I believe the second one was better. #fingerscrossed 9mo
BookWrym I enjoyed this my first read of this series. Shardlake is a great character and I like the time setting unusual for a Tudor novel not to start with Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn 9mo
AnneCecilie I‘ve read the entire series before and loved it so this is a reread. I love how Sansom is describing this area, so it feels like you‘re there with all the tension but also the daily life. 9mo
lil1inblue I really enjoyed my first read of this book. Shardlake is an interesting character. I also like the parallel of the dissolution of the monastery with the dissolution of Shardlake's faith in Reform. I have already started the second book, and I'm liking it more than the first already. 9mo
dabbe @lil1inblue Ooh, that's exciting! I hope to start this evening. 🤩 9mo
kwmg40 I decided not to reread this first book, since I'd read it only a couple of years ago. I loved the historical setting and characters but I didn't remember enough of the details to participate fully in the current discussion. Still, I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. I'll be reading along with the rest of you once we get to book 3. 9mo
dabbe @kwmg40 I 💚 it! Whatever works for you is fine! Can't wait to read your thoughts on Book 3! 🤩 9mo
PageShifter I really adored the setting!! This made me think how I should reread some awesome books about this era. I loved the history! Reading this book was thought-provoking! 7mo
dabbe @PageShifter I have been addicted to the Tudor era since childhood. There are so many wonderful books out there about this time period! 🧡🩶🧡 7mo
PageShifter Yes there is!!! And I got myself obsessed again 😂 7mo

That feeling when someone tests covid positive towards the end of the work day… triggering multiple covid policies and all the rat tests expired yesterday…

🫠

Tested anyway and so far so good, new tests should turn up tomorrow.

rubyslippersreads Good luck. 🤞 1y

LeahBergen I used a slightly out of date test and it worked well when I was Covid positive. 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeeRHarry, it‘s more that it‘s a little bit funny being just a day over the expiry. The email that went around said that they might not pick up the latest Covid variants. The email wasn‘t completely clear on who is considered a close contact either so idk. I barely had any crossover with that colleague, so should be ok. 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, I‘m assuming that the person who tested positive also used the same just out of date test… we all have the same, work provided ones. 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @AmyG, this latest strain has claimed a couple of my friends and colleagues too - hope everyone is doing ok in the aftermath. 1y

@BookmarkTavern

As a 5th grade hooked on Pippi Longstocking, I asked my teacher if I could read one of those books for the 1970s-done-to-death book report. She replied, “If it's not on the list, you can't read it.“ What a thing to say to a kid who loved to read!

I would love for children to experience a series of their own choosing so they can see why they're so fulfilling. 🧡💜💛

mabell The McGurk series by E.W. Hildick! Such fun mysteries, with great characters - smart go-get-em kids! 2y
BookmarkTavern Pippi is a delightful answer! Thank you for sharing! 2y
MissyD Pippi. I read all the pippi books. 😍😍😍. 2y

MissyD Teachers can kill a love for reading without meaning to do it. My son had to take those stupid AR TESTS in elementary school. The teacher decided that she would ASSIGN the books for them to read. But she didn‘t allow any chance for him to read what HE enjoyed and found interesting. 🙄. Now he hates to read 😢 2y

dabbe @MissyD 🧡💜💛 2y
dabbe @MissyD Oh, the dreaded AR. We fought NOT to have that but lost anyway. I also hated reading after my Pippi episode, but I came back to loving it again when I got to choose my own books; I bet your son will end of the same. Just in case, I'll keep my #fingerscrossed 🤞🤩😍 2y
MissyD @dabbe he‘s 21. In college. So reading is not high on his list of fun things. 🙄😢. I hated having to force my students to take AR tests. I just let them read and take the tests. My son‘s school used their goal as a grade 🙄. Sooo not how AR was intended to be used. He never met his goal because he hated being “forced” to read things he didn‘t like. He wanted: sports/survival topics/historical fiction/war books 2y
dabbe @MissyD My love of reading didn't come back until after college, so there's still hope! 🤩 Too many textbooks to read during that time--just like high school. All of our elementary teachers use AR, but I don't know if they have to count the tests as a grade; I certainly hope not. 2y

BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle she never learns 2y
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead And you think she would have learned…😂 2y
ashlynn.majeske I agree. Can't she just learn for once? 2y
Deblovestoread London, a much bigger playground for Emma‘s tricks and I think Kitty shouldn‘t be thinking William Price is her beaux yet…. 2y
BarkingMadRead @Deblovestoread I‘m waiting for him to prefer Georgiana 💥 2y
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk #RIPColonelBrandon too. Where‘s Marianne???? 2y
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin right? I‘ll have to check my character list and see if she‘s on it 2y
willaful Surely there must be a nice, #noflannel wearing man for Marianne in this?

I'm also expecting William to prefer G, though I had previously thought she and James would be the match. Kitty and James certainly doesn't seem very likely. Who else is at a loose end, matrimony-wise?
2y
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead the whole time I‘m reading this I‘m thinking “oh no, is this going to go all J Geils band ‘love stinks‘ 🎶he loves her, but she loves him, and he loves somebody else, you just can‘t win🎶 also why does every chapter make me think of a song? 2y
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🤣🤣 I love that! 2y
dabbe @BarkingMadRead I am, too! We already know she prefers him; it's hard to pin down Price's feelings though just yet. 2y
