July, July: A Novel | Tim O'Brien
242 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
Insidiously, compulsively readable. MSNBC At the thirtieth reunion of the Darton Hall College class of 1969, ten old friends join their classmates for a summer weekend of dancing, drinking, flirting, reminiscing, and regret. The three decades since graduation have brought marriage and divorce, children and careers, hopes deferred and replaced. July, July tells the heart-rending and often hilarious story of men and women who came into adulthood at a moment when American ideals and innocence began to fade. These lives will ring familiar to anyone who has dreamed, worked, and struggled to keep course toward a happy ending. With humor and a sense of wistful hope, July, July speaks directly to the American character and its resilience, striking deep at the emotional center of our lives. "A symphony of American life. All Things Considered, NPR A small-scale tour de force by an American original . . . OBrien is one of the most accomplished members of a generation of writers that includes Don DeLillo and Thomas Pynchon. Atlanta Journal-Constitution "Astonishing for [its] clarity of character, for [its] narrative thrills and surprises, for [its] humor and hard-won wisdom . . . July, July gives readers plenty of reasons to celebrate." Chicago Sun-Times "Perceptive, affectionate and often very funny." Boston Herald "A deeply satisfying story . . . OBrien is intelligent and daring, but he is also eminently accessible. O, the Oprah Magazine"Taut and compelling." Los Angeles Times Book Review"Beautifully realized, heartbreakingly honest." Providence Journal-Bulletin Almost impossible to put down. Austin American-Statesman

Here‘s my July reading wrap-up. I really like this cute little summary. This is going to save me so much time every month. I just finished Never Lie by Freida McFadden. I decided to add it to my July wrap-up even though it‘s now August 1 and it‘s 2 AM. I didn‘t think I was going to finish this book at 2 AM but I couldn‘t stop reading it once it got really good.

ShananigansReads If you didn‘t sleep it‘s the same day. Lol. I love this wrap up too. 5mo

I‘m a week late with my July TBR. It‘s ambitious but I‘m reading books for #SundayBuddyRead #ChildrensClassicRead2024 #SeasonalCozies #CampLitsy24 #SheSaid #NancyDrewBR #BobWhiteBuddies #FoodandLit #Turkey #Naturalitsy (finishing up June & hopefully starting July if my hold comes in) #Roll100 July, an ARC & #Roll100 May/June catch ups.

The ? Is for the multiple Libby e-books on hold that say “~ 2 Weeks” that will probably all come in at once!

Here‘s what I read and watched in July as well as my thoughts on what I watched.

Firefly Lane - My mom and I watched this on Netflix. My mom liked it. I didn‘t. Maybe I‘ll like the book better.

Elemental - My birthday was on July 9. I went to see this with my mom. I really liked this. It was cute.

Oppenheimer - I went to see this with my stepmom, my brother and my sister in law. They liked it. I didn‘t.

Megabooks @BarbaraBB I just finished the first O‘Farrell. It veered into cheesy romance territory at the end, but the structure of the first three parts was superb. She was also working through the feelings she has about the childhood disease she faced, and it was cool to read that. I think I‘m going for heatwave next. 1y

Today, I‘m sharing the books I read in July. My goal this month was to finish reading the Dorothy Must Die series. I started the series in 2016. I‘ve had the 3rd volume of short stories and the 4th book sitting on my shelf since 2017 so I decided to finish the series. Since I finished the series, I‘ve been thinking about it a lot. It was so fun and magical. I‘m experiencing a book hangover.

June went surprisingly well for me. I read LOTS of queer stories and ate high folic foods more often. The uni draft isn't finished yet but that is due to ongoing medical complications.

Due to said complications, I'll have to be similarly chill with my July goals:
- High Folic foods 5/week
- Read at least 2 fairyloot books
- Tidy 1/week
