It's seven in the morning. The Bantrys wake to find the body pf a young woman in their library. She is wearing an evening dress and heavy make-up, which is smeared across her distorted cheeks. The respectable Bantrys invite Jane Marple to solve the mystery - before tongues start to wag.

My second Marple mystery and I really enjoyed this one. Miss Marple played a much bigger role in solving the murder. The ending was great. I thought the full solution was so unique!

One early morning sees Dolly Bantry wake up to find the dead body of a young woman in their library. Neither Dolly nor husband, the Colonel, have seen her before but it's not long before the local gossip starts up. Dolly knows this could end up ostracising them from the village so she reaches out to long-time friend, Jane Marple, for help & her enquiries see them head off to the Majestic hotel for a short stay. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf When another body is found in the charred remains of a car in an abandoned quarry, Miss Marple realises she is dealing with a well-planned murder.

I was a bit disappointed with the first book in this series but this one was much better. The characters are not quite so dreary & the plot clips along at a fair rate. I remembered quite a bit of this one from the 1980s TV series but it was still a great read.
11mo
OutsmartYourShelf Miss Marple came across rather well & it's clear that she is nobody's fool. Obviously there are one or two places where attitudes have changed such as the disapproval for an unmarried couple living together, a situation which wouldn't turn a hair nowadays. Overall though I really enjoyed reading this one. 5🌟

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I read an Agatha Christie novel every December, & it‘s something I always look forward to. This was my first Miss Marple mystery, and it did not disappoint! It definitely made me want to read more from her series - I feel like I know Poirot so well & would like to know Miss Marple the same. What feels like a straightforward whodunit is, of course, not that at all. I always like being taken on the ride Christie brings me on.Til next year!

A quality distraction. Just the right length. Engrossing enough to keep focus, but not too taxing for an already stressed brain. Of course, I could have done without the incredibly shallow, prejudiced descriptions/judgements and some other period (in)appropriate attitudes, but this worked much better for me than The Murder at the Vicarage - the right amount of Marple and way less high strung melodramatic dialogue. ⚠️Ableism, classism, misogyny

This is the second Miss Marple book! I finished it last week. I didn‘t think I was going to really enjoy the Miss Marple mysteries, but I really liked this one! The mystery was good and I‘m sure I missed clues as to who the killer was.

I‘m trying to read all the Agatha Christie books in order and like one a month!

I like to read a few Christie books a year. I enjoy them but I am never blown away by them. This one features Miss Marple but she is not as present as I expected she would be. She solves the mystery but it seems like it is done off scene. It was enjoyable 3 stars.

Jenken1998 I think the mystery/ thriller genre has us searching for the shock and awe that these older mysteries seem simple. I feel myself always looking for the “shocking twist“. It's there in these reads but it's not like we have come to expect from current stories. IMO 2y
Leniverse I think that's fairly common with Miss Marple stories, that she's not the main character. She's usually the NPC with vital information. Practically a deus ex machina at times. lol 2y
BookBelle84 @Jenken1998 I completely agree! When I'm reading Christie, I am always looking for the tropes of the genre and think about how she was one of the first to use them. It makes me appreciate her writing more. 2y
Jenken1998 @leniverse I guess I never really noticed in until this book. Not that it matters. They are still enjoyable. I wonder if it's the same with Poirot and I never noticed. Guess I will find one to read or reread. 2y
Leniverse No, Poirot is definitely the main character everywhere he goes 😆 2y

My monthly Christie is complete for April. I enjoyed this one. I like Christie's little opinionated asides about children, parenting, social conventions, generational and class differences. Miss Marple is always on the verge of not being taken seriously even though she's got the sharpest mind in the bunch.

DrSabrinaMoldenReads What‘s a Christie that you have not liked and What‘s been your favorite? 2y
ImperfectCJ @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I didn't like The Big 4 (apparently Christie didn't like it either). As far as favorites, I quite liked The ABC Murders and Murder on the Orient Express. Her stories usually don't stick with me well, but those I remember. The Sittaford Mystery has grown on me a bit, too, even though it didn't really strike me when I read it. 2y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @ImperfectCJ It‘s interesting that you mentioned “Orient Express” because that‘s the one I just read and I was letdown. When I was in about middle school many many years ago, I loved her books and decided to try again since I have not found many mysteries that baffled me like hers did back then. Is there another mystery writer you particularly like? 2y
ImperfectCJ @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I teach 6th graders, and I have one who loves Agatha Christie. He's got a much better memory for her books than I do. I read horror when I was in middle school, pretty new to mystery. Other mystery writers I like: I'm a Michael Connelly and Louise Penny completist, and I just started reading Elly Griffiths, Dorothy Sayers, and Phoebe Atwood Taylor, whose books I liked, but I haven't read much by them yet. 2y

“Downstairs in the lounge, by the third pillar from the left, there sits an old lady with a sweet, placid spinsterish face, and a mind that has plumbed the depths of human iniquity and taken it as all in the day‘s work. Her name‘s Miss Marple…and where crime is concerned she‘s the goods, Conway.” 😆

💙Miss Marple! Enjoyed this second installment enormously. Delightful (though the crime revealed is quite dark) and just a pleasure to read.

batsy This is a dark mystery, indeed. It's one of my faves but I remember being just a tad spooked when I read it as a kid. 2y

Oooh, this was just delicious! With Christie half the fun is seeing the solution neatly laid out at the end and piecing it together again backwards, and this one seemed especially well plotted so I got to relish that sense of surprise all over again as I ran back through how everything fit together.

IndoorDame And how much do I love Miss Marple for relishing the thought of the murderer hanging! Female heroes are too rarely allowed to be seen in any light that may make them look unfeeling. #Pantone2023 #VanillaCream #FabulousFebruary (edited) 2y

Thanks for the tag @Eggs
My favorite, female character is probably Miss Marple. My first Christie book was Body in the Library, and as a second daughter, who was labeled the smart one (my older sister was the pretty one), I took comfort in Miss Marple‘s genius and eccentricity. The older I get the more I love her. The beauty of Marple, she can fit in anywhere. If you have not played, consider yourself tagged.

This book is part of the Miss Marple series and is considered an early cozy mystery. It wasn‘t my favorite Agatha Christie. Something about the class distinctions irritated me. Perhaps it was the trivialization of the dead girl from the ‘wrong‘ class by the snobbish well-to-do (possibly to make the story less sad)? That said, it is a clever whodunnit from the master and I‘m sure a good read if you‘re in the right mood.

rwmg I found it fascinating how the story started off sympathetic to the victim and shifted over its course to disdain for her as a gold digger 2y

I am an Agatha Christie fan. I am! As a fan I hate to select “So-so” as the final verdict for any of her books, but rereading Agatha Christie‘s books as an adult is not quite reawakening the lovely feelings that I had as a teen reader of her work. She was adored. Don‘t get me wrong, she still is, but even in the cozy realm this story lacks gumption. It is missing brouhaha - the frenzied excitement of a whodunnit mystery.👇🏽

Nute Okay, how and why is there a body in the library of Mr. and Mrs. Bantry? I‘ll bite. I want to know, but along the way that curiosity waned, probably because of lack of interest in who was affected by it, other than obviously the poor dead girl.🥴 And calling this a Miss Marple mystery?! That‘s a stretch by all definitions. It was more like a book featuring a guest appearance by Miss Marple.👇🏽 (edited) 3y
Nute Miss Marple‘s keen insights were not really needed, because by the time that she made a noteworthy appearance to solve the mystery, I was on the scene solving the mystery myself… helped along instead by the actual investigators, not the sleuth.
Now she did get me with a twisty revelation…Agatha still reigns as Queen there…she knows how to purposely misdirect and then shock a reader‘s perspective?👇🏽
(edited) 3y
Nute She does that brilliantly. Props for that! See, she is my girl! And though it seems that this particular book should have remained a far distant memory, I am still on a quest to read all of her work. 3y

LiteraryinPA Awesome review! I am also a huge Agatha fan, but yeah, not every single one is at the same standard. 🙃 3y
Crazeedi What a well worded and thoughtful review! I never really read many of her books for some reason. 3y
VioletBramble This one is on my 2022 reading list. I've had it a long time and I need to move it off the shelf. I'll go in with lowered expectations. Great review. Thanks for the warning. 3y
Nute @LiteraryinLawrence Thank you, Allison!💕 I agree with you. Your words ring true for Agatha Christie‘s canon and many other authors who have written many books. Not every book can be described as their best work or exemplify the author at the top of her/his game. Yet, they remain a talented and prolific author. She wrote so many books. A ‘miss‘ here and there is to be expected. Have you read all of her books? 3y
Nute @Crazeedi Thank you, Diane!💕 I have loved this author since my teen years when I had a magnetic pull towards quaint mystery books: Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes, Ellery Queen stories, Albert Campion, Henry Gamadge, etc., after enjoying Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys books and so many others in childhood. For most of these authors, I have read the entirety of their mystery collections and at times I reread a book here and there. 3y
Nute @VioletBramble Thank you, Kelly!💕 Are you reading through Agatha Christie‘s entire canon? I read many of her books in my teenaged years. I have decided to read all of her books as an adult which required a reread for several of them. Since I remember the event of reading them with such fondness, maybe I am not being fair to these books with this new scrutiny. This is usually the reason why I don‘t often reread well-loved stories. 3y
Nute @VioletBramble Can‘t wait to read your review after you read this. Tag me.🙂 3y
bthegood This is on my reading list - and yes, like most authors for me (if I enjoy the first read enough and continue with them) some of their work is hit and miss - I have yet to find an author that is a solid pick every time - 🙂 3y
VioletBramble No, I'm not reading all the Christie books. I read a lot of her books when I was in 7th-9th grades. A neighbor used to pass all her books on to me when she was done with them. Her Ellery Queen books as well. In the many decades since 9th grade I have only read 1 Christie - Halloween Party. Body in the Library sounded interesting and it was one of the first books I bought on Kindle. I hope you enjoy reading your way through all the Christie novels. 3y
truthinfiction Ahh, Kimberley, you have said it. I was excited to read this book simply because it had the word library in it. But, I was, somewhat, sorely disappointed. When it comes to Dame Christie, her Tommy and tuppence books are a miss with me. I only read the first two and afterwards abandoned the cause. Have you read her Colonel Race series? 3y
Nute @truthinfiction It remains a wonder at Agatha Christie‘s proliferation as an author. She generated an extraordinary amount of written works which is why, I guess, we can be forgiving of a “missed” effort. The Tommy and Tuppence series didn‘t appeal to me either, but it was many years ago. Maybe I‘ll try again. I have read two of the Colonel Race series, Death on the Nile and Man in the Brown Suit. We have many options for our Buddy Read!🤗 3y

Nute @Andrew65 I love that memory, Andrew! According to the PBS Documentary on Agatha Christie, her interest in crime and mysteries was spurred by listening to her Mother and her Friends discussing the crime section of the newspaper. They would temper their discussions because of her presence in the room which is probably what gives her stories that cozy mystery feeling. 3y

Overall a good plot with twists about not trusting stereotypes. Of mistaken stories. Although, again, I felt lost of it being a Miss Marple story with not a lot of Miss Marple. She did so more in this one, though, even as it was mainly her insight of being a woman. She was only helpful in that regard. That she noticed little points that the men couldn‘t. This was a good quick read through and through

The body of a young woman, dressed for a night party, is found early morning in a married couple‘s library. No one knows who she is. So the wife calls up Mrs Marple before the police arrived.
