I gave The Haunting of Paynes Hollow three stars, mostly out of kindness. I read it quickly, but more out of boredom than suspense. The story felt very unrealistic, and for me, a good horror novel needs at least a touch of realism to make the scares truly land. Maybe this genre just isn‘t for me. The author‘s writing itself wasn‘t bad, but the story didn‘t resonate, and I don‘t think I‘ll seek out similar books in the future.

Still catching up daily haikus. This one was inspired by my 4th Silent Book Club experience. We read at outside tables & Thursday night was blustery (although not cold because well, … Hawaii. We scooched in at tables under the eaves & some people went into the mall, but the reading & bookish talk went on.

Itchyfeetreader Love the idea of silent book club 3d
DebinHawaii @dabbe It is the same club & they do 3-4 events per month. This one is usually the second Thursday each month & held near my house so I haven‘t done the other activities at other venues yet. If you are interested try looking on Meet Up or just google Silent Book Club for your city & see if anything comes up. 📚💙 3d
DebinHawaii @Itchyfeetreader @JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal It‘s pretty fun & enjoyable & I say that as a introvert/ambivert. 😉💙 (edited) 3d

A young man who has improbably escaped death twice reveals his secret.

This was a decent short story. Odd Thomas vibes.

It was late December in the south of England, and though it was only three in the afternoon, the sky outside Charlotte Holmes‘s bedroom window was as black and full as it would‘ve been in the Arctic Circle.

This was really good! Part murder mystery, part haunting and all family drama. It was really well written and kept me guessing until the end on what was really happening!

I read this one book and was completely turned off by her style of writing. I won't read another Hoover ever again. 🤷‍♀️

Aims42 Samesies lol I have so many friends who love her and her books. I‘m glad she‘s getting adults back into reading, but she‘s not for me, thanks 🙅‍♀️ 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures I haven't even read one and have negative desire to. 1w
TEArificbooks Unpopular opinion - Emily Henry. I have read four of her books for various book clubs. She keeps getting picked and I can‘t do it anymore. Didn‘t like any of them. If she gets picked again I won‘t read the book. 1w

dabbe @Aims42 You are absolutely right. Any writer who gets people reading is a-okay in my ... wait for i ... book! 🤣 1w
dabbe @ChaoticMissAdventures They are page turners for sure. I just found the writing to be immature and the plots to be too out there. 1w
dabbe @TEArificbooks I have never read her and thanks to your review, never will! 😍 1w
dabbe @GingerAntics Same! I tried it and just didn't want to take the energy to get to know all of these people and weird places. 🤷‍♀️ 1w
Aims42 @dabbe LOL! Well done 👏👏👏😆 1w

3.8 ⭐️ I may be a little biased as I work as a therapist in a prison, which led me to wanting to smack the crap out of the FMC 90% of the time. Otherwise, it was a good thriller. Had to second guess myself a lot of times, but I wasn‘t overly surprised by the end. OK, that‘s not completely true. There was one scene that when I found out about and I was like “well damn”. Overall, a fun read, and I will try this author again in the future.
