Romeo and Juliet (Updated) | William Shakespeare

A glooming peace this morning with it brings.
The sun for sorrow will not show his head.
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon‘d and some punished;
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

Exeunt omnes.

“The quick anger of these men was not useful.” I do love a retelling and this one - or rather, an “untelling” - is a good one. For what happens before Romeo meets Juliet? What passes between Romeo and fair Rosaline? Here we find out in all its gory, unpleasant detail. I‘m coming at this as a lover of historical fiction, not a Shakespeare scholar. In that context, great as a retelling, equally good as standalone historical fiction.

I was intrigued by the premise - if Romeo & Juliet had lived… and what if Verona‘s most famous couple-in-love‘s firstborn avoided getting married like it‘s her job… what would happen? Ultimately, it was slow to start and felt a little off with some language used…. I was slightly more engaged towards the end, but I won‘t continue with the series.

⭐️⭐️

An interesting premise... but to me, not the best storyline development/plot execution despite a clever protagonist.

Rosie, her nurse, and siblings were likable, sure... but there were additional elements that felt not fully fleshed out... maybe rushed or thrown in as an afterthought.

(Cont'd ⬇️)

Librariana (1 of 2) The inclusion of some modern dialogue was unexpected and produced a chuckle here or there, but it also felt... unnecessary and almost wrong for a book trying to present as historical, which, in addition, also felt a LOT more like YA fiction rather than something geared towards adult readers. 4mo
Librariana (2 of 2) Not everything blended in as seamlessly as perhaps I would've liked, especially for something promising "Knives Out meets Bridgerton." The 'mystery' and the attempts at a Lady Whistledown-like main character were both weak and disappointing. 4mo
