This is not really a straightforward memoir about being a dancer, but a series of average length chapters which deal with the pressures & pitfalls of both ballet & modern life for women & girls. I think many young girls are enthralled with the world of ballet as children - I certainly was, but any dreams were dampened by being markedly above average height.

OutsmartYourShelf Reading this, I think my height saved me from something which wouldn't have been a good experience for me in the long run.

There seems to be some basic misunderstanding of feminism today - just because a woman makes a decision that doesn't automatically make it a feminist decision. Since the dawn of time to now, women make decisions which negatively impact on other women & shouldn't be lauded for them.
6d
OutsmartYourShelf Maybe I'm not the right audience for this book but choosing to continue to revere someone who was abusive is just unfathomable to me, whilst giving up your dreams to nurse a man who has cheated on you repeatedly & even whilst ill is still attempting to is just....ridiculous to contemplate. 2⭐

TWs: (major) eating disorders, body issues, pain. (minor) infidelity.

I found this novel quirky and charming, but plodding as well. It's billed as sci-fi, but it mostly shows the insightful perspective of a woman who is different from everyone else.

Rome 58 AD, & young Gnaeus Julius Agricola's widowed mother arranges for a banquet where she can call on all outstanding favours to obtain her son a commission in the Roman army. Things look bleak but he is finally offered the posting of senior tribune in far-off Britannia, serving under Suetonius Paulinus. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Agricola needs information about Britannia & buys a slave-guide, a native Briton named Luci, who is taciturn & stubborn, & Agricola is not sure who is more dangerous - the enemy he faces on the battlefield or the one in his household.

Loosely based on the life of the real Agricola - Roman soldier, & later consul & governor. I read this one as I have an ARC of the second book & wanted to get the background of the character.

OutsmartYourShelf He's fairly likeable in most respects but a bit of an unlikely prodigy who, without much experience compared to those around him, has sharp instincts & insights on how to proceed. I'm more interested in the machinations back in Rome than the cut-&-thrust of battle, but it was an interesting read. Book 2 looks more promising in that respect. 3.5🌟

TWs: (graphic) violence, torture, death (moderate) death of a child (minor) animal death.

My first #FrozenSick prompt completed! I‘m already starting on the book for the next space. 😅🤣 I love this challenge!

Book set in winter: Secret Santa ✅

@PuddleJumper created the awesome challenge, if you want to play along!

*I made a character in BG3 to play as and to use as a model for my posts. You don‘t have to do anything like that to participate in the challenge. 😅❤️

PuddleJumper I love it! I've avoided buying BG3 because I don't trust myself right now 1w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @PuddleJumper Thanks! ❤️ Lol, understandable. It definitely takes up a rather large chunk of what little free time I have nowadays. 😅🤣 1w

2025 Re-Read:

18-year-old Chloe Emery unexpectedly returns home from her father's house. Inside the house is covered in blood & the cat has been confined to one room for several days but is otherwise OK. Chloe's mother meanwhile is nowhere to be seen but no-one can survive losing that much blood. Newly promoted DS Maeve Kerrigan is one of those investigating the case, & soon learns that the missing woman, Kate Emery, had made a lot of enemies.

OutsmartYourShelf My previous review pretty much stands but there were some moments between Derwent & Maeve that stood out this time around, some definite flirting going on there. Derwent seems unhappy in his new relationship already. Again upping my rating to 4🌟this time around as the case was intriguing & Kerwent is on the bubble.

Ever since Theo Mackey's mother died in a house fire, Theo has been living with the guilt of a secret only he knows - he lit the match that accidentally caused the fire although he can't remember it clearly. Now his father is also dead, & his grandfather is drinking himself into a stupor most nights. Still, Theo is keeping it together: good grades & captain of the school's diving team, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but when he starts remembering bits & pieces from the night of the fire, his life starts to spiral & his future is at risk from the past.

Wasn't expecting much from this as it was a random pick from my TBR pile, but it turned out to be quite good. If you're unfamiliar with diving (like me), there's explanations of the different terms etc (including the title phrase) at the start of each chapter which was interesting. Name check for Tom Daley too!

OutsmartYourShelf The plot was kept simple & uncomplicated, but I thought it was a little too obvious who the 'bad guy' was though right from the start, even for a YA book. I probably wouldn't read it again but it was worth a read. 4🌟

TWs: drug use (moderate), sexual content (moderate).

The offbeat friend group from the first book consisting of reluctant medium Claire, the ghost of her forever-17-year-old murdered friend Sophie, nonbinary Alex, & gay ex-police detective Sebastian (aka Bash) go on a cheap minibreak to Spike Island, off the Irish coast. There they encounter a second group of friends on a yoga retreat who aren't particularly happy that the accommodation has been double-booked. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf It doesn't take long for Claire to be sought out by the local ghosts, mainly two groups who are locked in a long-running pirate feud over the island & some missing treasure. Unfortunately Claire comes under suspicion when she finds the dead body of one of the other group of friends, & just when she needs her friends it seems they've deserted her - Bash is conveniently never around, Alex is making friends with the other group, 2w
OutsmartYourShelf & Sophie is falling for one of the pirate ghosts.

This was quite good but could have been better. The plot seemed to take forever to get anywhere. Although there were some genuinely funny bits (nice reference to The Princess Bride at one point), it seemed like Claire spent most of her time saying “Err“ & running away from everyone else. I really wanted her to finally stand up to people & advocate for herself.
2w
OutsmartYourShelf I'd probably read another one but really need some character development for Claire. 3⭐

Love this quick, easy read. Loving this series, book 5.

This one has midsummer night dreams vibes. A love potion goes awry and someone ends up murdered. So of course, she has to solve the murder. The romance was getting started and then the love potion ruined it. 😒

Short review: This is the third in the series but the first one I've read & for me it worked just as well as a standalone. I think because each one is set in the court of a different wife of Henry VIII, it didn't feel as if I'd missed huge amounts. If you have a rudimentary knowledge of Tudor history, you should be fine. I also adored the character of Somers' dog, Nosewise.

DC Becky Greene receives some odd post at work - an advent calendar but behind every door is a photo from a crime scene. Is it a prank or is it real? An investigation into the photos reveals that they are real scenes & crimes & it seems someone has been killing for 20 years - one death a year in the month of December. Greene is paired with DS Eddie Carmine who has a link to one of the crimes. Can they catch the killer?

OutsmartYourShelf Good: the plot was quite interesting with the link to Christmas & the macabre 'advent calendar' of crime scenes. Bonus points also for the mentioning of 'American Gothic', the 1990s TV show starring Gary Cole. (Loved that show.) As soon as the name 'Lucas Buck' was mentioned, I knew. The not-so-good: I feel like the author was trying hard to force chemistry between the two police officers (Greene & Carmine) & it was just not happening. 3⭐ 1mo
