Crooked House | Agatha Christie

I enjoyed this mystery, typical of Christie's English country-house stories but not featuring any of her famous detectives.

A short but poignant novel set partly during the Christmas season. I love the #VMC covers and was happy to have found this edition at a used book store.

I hope everyone had a Merry Xmas ♥️💚As you can tell, I‘m back from my SM break & while I‘m still not 100% I am doing better. Plus I missed you all! I‘ll be launching my #JumpStart2025 challenge so all of us can start the year right coz I just did a home library organisation where my daughter & I found I had 3,000 books on my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom😱 I am now banned from buying books till that‘s smaller🫣Any suggestions on other 2025 challenges?

LeeRHarry Lovely to see you here Liz! 💕 3d
TrishB Good to see you ❤️ 3d
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Welcome back! ❤️ As for reading challenges, I‘m participating in #BookSpinBingo and #Roll100 again. A new one I‘m trying out is the DnD themed #FrozenSick. I‘m really looking forward to it. The @LitsyEvents account has a bunch of challenges and buddy reads reposted too if you‘re looking for a bigger list. 😅❤️ 3d

Lizpixie @LeeRHarry @TrishB @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Librarybelle @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Chelsea.Poole thank you all for your welcome back, I‘m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things & to a new reading year!♥️📚 2d
Ruthiella Glad you are feeling better! Wonderful to see you back posting. ❤️ I recommend trying the #Roll100 challenge, since it is only three books a month that you choose from your TBR. That gives you space to also read other books and not feel too constricted. (edited) 2d

My 2025 list for #Roll100! I‘m looking forward to focusing more on reading what I already own this year so instead of doing a half and half list like last year (fifty of the spaces were just supposed to be the next book in a series I was reading), I filled my list completely with actual titles that I chose from my shelves.

I‘m hoping many of these fit the prompts for #FrozenSick but I haven‘t looked ahead because I want to be surprised. 😅

Ruthiella Oh! That reminds me I need to prep my list! 😃 5d
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Ruthiella Mine took much longer than I‘d care to admit. 🤣 5d

Molly is your average 15-year-old, wanting to join a band, live under the radar at school, & being totally embarrassed by her parents being 'The Rocking Stockings' a Christmas band. Back when Molly was just a small child & her parents were known as the 'Brussel Shouts', they made a Christmas record called 'Love Your Elf' & Molly starred as 'Little Elf Girl'. A fact Molly has been trying to hide ever since. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Now she hears that unbelievably the song has been chosen for the soundtrack to the latest Christmas romcom out this year & her cover could be blown. If her schoolmates & neighbours find out she was the 'Little Elf Girl', her life won't be worth living.

This is definitely not my usual reading fare but I quite enjoyed it. There were some parts that made me laugh out loud, there's lots of references to British pop culture, & there was so much going

OutsmartYourShelf on - not just the main plot, although I thought that the twist was a bit obvious. There's a smidgeon of romance but it's age-appropriate if a bit corny. I'm not the target audience but it was a pretty good read & definitely great for my Christmas readathons for the seasonal setting. 4🌟

A very good installment in the Inspector Rebus series, in which Rebus investigates a school shooting that involves a family connection.

kwmg40 @Andrew65 @bookaholic1 I agree. I've been reading this series mostly in order so far, though I've had to skip a couple that weren't easily accessible to me, and I appreciate the development of Rebus's character and his relationships with those around him. 7d
kwmg40 @Zuhkeeyah Thanks! I really enjoyed the Pokemon challenge this year and look forward to the 2025 challenge. @PuddleJumper 7d

This looked a promising thriller in the synopsis & I really enjoyed books set in/on isolated areas. I found this one a little underwhelming though. Although the idea is good, the POVs for Dee & Tori were not differentiated enough by their characters, & I had to keep checking who was narrating a particular chapter as it could have been either. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I also found it a bit all over the place in terms of pacing & plot progression & it felt very haphazard at times. The 'team challenges' also seemed to take a back seat to general griping & sniping between characters. Disappointing. 2⭐

TWs: death, injury detail, drug use (minor references), strong language.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Serpent's Tail/Viper/Profile Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This penultimate (for now) book in the series examines the dark side of....Morris dancing. Yes the traditionally twee pastime involving dressing in a costume, with bells, & banging wooden sticks together! I might have been more incredulous had I not read a book earlier this year (or last year) about the old practice of wassailing & its more sinister side.

OutsmartYourShelf Merrily is still dealing with the coterie of modernisers within the Church who want to root out anything 'medieval', including Deliverance aka exorcism. Elsewhere her daughter Jane continues to not return her boyfriend's calls or texts & then worries (not irrationally) that he may have moved on. 3.5🌟

In this Inspector Alleyn mystery, Alleyn investigates a grisly murder that happens during the performance of a ritual English folk dance and mummer's play to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

I'm using this for my final prompt of #52bookclub24, “Set during a holiday you don't celebrate,“ and with this, I've completed my 2024 challenge!
