The Poet and the Echo | Leila Aboulela

Mehso-so

I read this collection of short stories because it was my book club‘s choice. Each of the 10 short stories is supposedly a response to (or echo of) a poem, though there‘s at least 1 where I could see no connection between the chosen poem and the story. Of the 10, 3 have stuck in my mind, 2 as being good and thought provoking, 1 for pushing a dangerous ideology.

Police officer Sergeant Chandler Jenkins is manning the rural station in Wilbrook, Western Australia on edge of 100s of miles of unexplored wilderness. It's the usual kind of day until a dishevelled & injured man stumbles into the station. His name is Gabriel & he was abducted whilst hitch-hiking by a man named Heath. Heath had driven Gabriel to a remote cabin before telling Gabriel that he was to be victim no. 55, but Gabriel managed to escape.

OutsmartYourShelf Chandler has never dealt with a potentially big case like this before & has to call in the higher-ups, including Mitch, the man who used to be his partner whilst training who has now made the rank of Inspector. Chandler is making sure he has all his bases covered when a second man appears. Also dishevelled & injured, he says his name is Heath & he was abducted by a serial killer named Gabriel..... 1w
OutsmartYourShelf The synopsis to this was immediately intriguing to me & the premise is really good. Unfortunately the execution of it was not so good - the story became bogged down around Chandler & Mitch's antagonistic working relationship. There seemed to be no real reason as to why Mitch was so nasty to Chandler & it just made him seem like an ass. Also police procedure seemed to go out the window & one of the suspects escapes police custody TWICE! 1w
OutsmartYourShelf The worst thing though was the ending - what the heck was that? 2⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Simon & Schuster UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC & apologies for the very late review.

I read this book for #FoodandLit. I found it hard to read because it felt like one long paragraph after another because of no quotes when the characters were speaking. It was hard for me to get used to. I found it hard to understand what was going on. And still the ending left me with so many questions. I wanted to yell at the main character a few times as well. Overall, I thought the book was ok. #Read2025 @Texreader @Catsandbooks @DieAReader

This book was lackluster for me. I didn't get the characters. In fact, there were times their actions didn't make sense. While I have read other books by this author, this one just fell short. 2.5 🌟

I was excited to read this book; yet, it was a disappointment. I never connected with the characters, and I felt it dragged. It would have been better with less. This is the first book in the series, and the series is supposed to get better as it goes along. I'm on the fence as to whether I will read the next month. 2.5🌟 ##SeriesLove2025 @Andrew65

BethM I found the female MC in book two annoying, and the pace of book 3 a little slow. I enjoyed the series so far but I‘d say book 1 is a good indicator of the feel of the series. 3w
TheSpineView @BethM Thanks for that tidbit. That confirms it for me, I will not be finishing this series. So many other books I need to read. 3w

Sorry, this just isn‘t my thing. There are a few funny moments, and some sad moments that are too quickly glosses over. But mostly, I just didn‘t get it. As it‘s been nominated for awards, I‘m sure it‘s me, not the book. I just didn‘t get it.

BarbaraBB It‘ll be my next read. Curious what I ‘ll think! 3w
TheEllieMo @BarbaraBB don‘t let my thoughts on it cloud your judgement! I suspect it‘s my inability to see deeper meanings that is the problem, not the books itself 3w

Finished last weekend for #SheSaid this one was just okay for me. I think the concept is great & it had some good nuggets of wisdom like: “You were not just born to center your entire existence on work and labor. You were born to heal, to grow, to be of service to yourself and community, to practice, to experiment, to create, to have space, to dream, and to connect.” But, for a fairly short book (224 pgs) it seemed to drag along. I ⬇️

DebinHawaii … didn‘t connect with the author & felt like some of the best points were lost in the book while others were too repetitive. I‘m still glad I read it but it wasn‘t quite what I was looking for. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo

Tove_Reads I listened to it on the train and it was okay. Not sure I would have liked to read it 🤷🏼 1mo
TheBookgeekFrau @Tove_Reads Since he's writing in Chandler Bingese I could see how an audio book would be easier. Like Shakespeare, Chandler wasn't meant to be read 1mo

The synopsis for this book intrigued me from the start, can houses or buildings where murders or other evils take place be 'infected' by the acts that takes place within? The author looks at several different types of buildings including tower blocks, shacks, dolls houses, & even miniature dioramas of crime scenes, using the medium of popular culture (tv, film, & books).

OutsmartYourShelf I really enjoyed the section on the crime scene 'Nutshell' dioramas created by Frances Glessner Lee who became known as the 'Mother of Forensics'. That sent me down a rabbit hole on the internet! I was not entirely convinced by the author using so many fictional places from films though, I find that real-life places are always more eerie to read about. 2mo
OutsmartYourShelf Analysis was also rather surface rather than detailed, & overall although it was an illuminating read, I didn't find it as interesting as I initially thought I would. 3.25⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Repeater Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
