Gruesome Getaway | R. N. Cogley

Pickpick

23-year-old student Tadhg Kelly & his twin brother, Declan, are about to head off for a weekend getaway. Declan will be joined by his girlfriend Katie but Tadhg recently split with his boyfriend when he caught him cheating so he will be third-wheeling & not looking forward to it. As they get near to their destination they stop at a rundown petrol station for supplies & the man there is friendly until they tell him where they are headed.

OutsmartYourShelf The man tells them to turn around & go home, & they leave feeling a bit shook up but decide he was just a bit weird & they carry on. They reach the village & everything is old - cars, houses, the way the people there dress - & the people seem very odd. The cabin itself is lovely, but weird things start to happen & Tadhg starts to notice a unique Celtic symbol wherever they go. They finally decide to leave but is it already too late?

OutsmartYourShelf I liked the basic premise, it had the vibe of 'The Wicker Man' crossed with an episode of Supernatural. It also had good pace & an intriguing storyline, although the ending was a little disappointing after all the build-up. It was a quick fun read, especially if you like creepy horror books. 4🌟

TWs: blood, injury detail, infidelity.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

It's been a while since I read this the first time, probably about 20 years. Since the film I find it really difficult not to picture Denzel Washington as Rhyme so I just went with it. I found it a really good read back then, but since I've read a lot more crime fiction now, this time it wasn't quite as good as I remember. The case & the clues were fine but I found Amelia intensely irritating for the first half of the book. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf The second half was much better. 3⭐

TWs: (major) violence, torture, death, injury detail (moderate) suicidal thoughts, body shaming (minor) animal death.

Poirot receives a telephone call from Sir Claude Amory, a rich inventor who feels certain that someone in his household has stolen his new scientific formula & asks Poirot to investigate. Shortly before Poirot arrives Amory gives the thief one chance to return the formula anonymously whilst the lights are out, but when they are switched back on, Amory is dead. Everyone was in the same room & no-one heard anything so how was he killed & by whom?

OutsmartYourShelf I don't know what the original play by Christie was like but here the dialogue seemed very 'clunky' & it didn't flow naturally. The characters were also quite thinly drawn & just seemed like generic chess pieces moved about to get the desired end. Poirot also seemed a little different, although the author nailed Hastings as a character - that dolt forgets he has a wife as soon as someone else bats her eyelashes at him. 2⭐ 4d

This is not really a straightforward memoir about being a dancer, but a series of average length chapters which deal with the pressures & pitfalls of both ballet & modern life for women & girls. I think many young girls are enthralled with the world of ballet as children - I certainly was, but any dreams were dampened by being markedly above average height.

OutsmartYourShelf Reading this, I think my height saved me from something which wouldn't have been a good experience for me in the long run.

There seems to be some basic misunderstanding of feminism today - just because a woman makes a decision that doesn't automatically make it a feminist decision. Since the dawn of time to now, women make decisions which negatively impact on other women & shouldn't be lauded for them.

OutsmartYourShelf Maybe I'm not the right audience for this book but choosing to continue to revere someone who was abusive is just unfathomable to me, whilst giving up your dreams to nurse a man who has cheated on you repeatedly & even whilst ill is still attempting to is just....ridiculous to contemplate. 2⭐

TWs: (major) eating disorders, body issues, pain. (minor) infidelity.

Rome 58 AD, & young Gnaeus Julius Agricola's widowed mother arranges for a banquet where she can call on all outstanding favours to obtain her son a commission in the Roman army. Things look bleak but he is finally offered the posting of senior tribune in far-off Britannia, serving under Suetonius Paulinus. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Agricola needs information about Britannia & buys a slave-guide, a native Briton named Luci, who is taciturn & stubborn, & Agricola is not sure who is more dangerous - the enemy he faces on the battlefield or the one in his household.

Loosely based on the life of the real Agricola - Roman soldier, & later consul & governor. I read this one as I have an ARC of the second book & wanted to get the background of the character.

OutsmartYourShelf He's fairly likeable in most respects but a bit of an unlikely prodigy who, without much experience compared to those around him, has sharp instincts & insights on how to proceed. I'm more interested in the machinations back in Rome than the cut-&-thrust of battle, but it was an interesting read. Book 2 looks more promising in that respect. 3.5🌟

TWs: (graphic) violence, torture, death (moderate) death of a child (minor) animal death.

2025 Re-Read:

18-year-old Chloe Emery unexpectedly returns home from her father's house. Inside the house is covered in blood & the cat has been confined to one room for several days but is otherwise OK. Chloe's mother meanwhile is nowhere to be seen but no-one can survive losing that much blood. Newly promoted DS Maeve Kerrigan is one of those investigating the case, & soon learns that the missing woman, Kate Emery, had made a lot of enemies.

OutsmartYourShelf My previous review pretty much stands but there were some moments between Derwent & Maeve that stood out this time around, some definite flirting going on there. Derwent seems unhappy in his new relationship already. Again upping my rating to 4🌟this time around as the case was intriguing & Kerwent is on the bubble.
