This was interesting and helpful: I think the fact that I‘m a Christian and what I‘ve learned about Womanism helped me understand that thread better, and I know a Black friend who works incredibly hard in church leadership who really values it. So many women need to push back against “grind culture!”
it did seem repetitive as others have said, but in a way that was helpful, as I was often listening to it at times when I was resting!
#SheSaid

A low pick because I like the idea of rest as a form of resistance but the book was a bit repetitive. We live in the world of hustle culture which makes us believe that we are never doing enough & we‘ll never be good enough unless we‘re doing more. “We are going up against such violent systems in our attempt to disrupt & pushback: white supremacy, capitalism, ableism, patriarchy, classism, anti blackness, homophobia, etc.”
Our focus is to lay down because it is our divine right to do so, not because it will prepare our bodies to be more productive. Our rest movement is not focused on productivity. It is instead a political and social justice movement rooted in our collective rest. We must liberate together. We must liberate together. We must rest together. We are going up against such violent systems in our attempt to disrupt and push back.

Finished last weekend for #SheSaid this one was just okay for me. I think the concept is great & it had some good nuggets of wisdom like: “You were not just born to center your entire existence on work and labor. You were born to heal, to grow, to be of service to yourself and community, to practice, to experiment, to create, to have space, to dream, and to connect.” But, for a fairly short book (224 pgs) it seemed to drag along. I ⬇️

We don‘t need more of the same boxed-in, and limited thinking. It‘s time to tap into our imaginations. It‘s time to go deep into the crux of who we are to be able to make sense of our world. Capitalism is new, and our bodies are ancient. Grind culture has created exhausted, disconnected, and traumatized people moving through life unable to tap into their true power. We need rest to connect back to ourselves and dream. We will rest. #SheSaid
To rest in a dream space is a red brick through the glass window of capitalism. I want our intentional rest to scream at depression on a bullhorn, then emerge soft and full, slowly whispering in a pace that feels unnecessarily slow and awkward until it becomes your heartbeat. Let the space that dreaming asks for channel you back to your true self, the tender human bound up by a violent duty to overwork to justify your worth.

Hello #SheSaid!
How did everyone make out with this book? I know a few were excited for it and a few disappointed? Please let us know how it was for you in the comments!

This author rubbed me the wrong way. For someone preaching rest, she can't seem to let anything go. We would not be friends IRL.

I‘m on the fence with this one. I‘m all for a good f*ck the patriarchy, capitalism, racism, white supremacy, and ableism are bad, kind of book. But there‘s so much repetition here and a ton of anger (justified, but unfocused) that the book itself is exhausting and draining, which seems to defeat the purpose. A low pick. I like the idea of the book better than the execution. #shesaid

Hello #SheSaid!
How is everyone doing this week?

I‘m listening to this on audio for #shesaid, so I don‘t have the exact quote, but can someone tell me - do they truly no longer have nap time or recess in elementary school? I remember nap time in Kindergarten and we had recess throughout elementary school. (Also, the audio is fine, but I think I‘m going to need my own print copy!)

I have been grinding at jobs and my own business since I was 14 years old. Whether I am healthy or ill. After heartbreak and celebration. And the idea that I can both care for myself and my body, while also being liberated, is deeply tempting. By I‘m skeptical, for sure.

Rest as a healing portal! Yes, I do believe this. Seeing it as away to resist capitalism and white supremacy is new to me, but makes sense.

Anyone get any rest this week, not me 😂

Hello #SheSaid!
I have to say when this was the first pick, I thought…maybe we needed something stronger for this time in history. BUT! I was wrong…. In an age when actions are meant to exhaust us and then numb us and make us just check out and tune out…this is exactly the right book for right now. Rest and Resist, and Rest as resistance. See you in the comments ;~)

“Release the shame you feel when resting. It does not belong to you.”

Rereading this book to remind myself to do less in the new year.

A good spot on the porch with a pot of tea, a blanket & Tricia Hersey here to whisper-shout: “Your body is a site of liberation./It doesn‘t belong to capitalism.”

My spouse asked me to read this since he is too, and I couldn‘t say no to that (and pass up the opportunity to acquire a new book). I love how it starts (and think it‘s cool how the title is ghosting through the page).

Random audio listen. Trying to be productive but failing miserably😖🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

5/5 ⭐ An important read.
I'm bothered by the low rating on Litsy for this book. If you're upset by the author's call to end white supremacy, end capitalism, and end patriarchy, what are you even doing here?
Merriam-Webster's definition of white supremacy: the belief that the white race is inherently superior to other races and that white people should have control over people of other races.
This ideology must end.

“Rest as if your life depended on it.” Doesn‘t it though?

“I want us to understand that nuance is freeing and freedom. There is no such thing as cookie-cutter healing. Everyone brings them an origin story, a history, and identities that are interconnected. There is room to rest in the freedom of managing your own deprogramming journey.. you don‘t have to grind, hustle, accept burnout as normal, and be in a constant state of exhaustion and sleep deprivation”
READ THIS 😍

This book was profound in it's message of rest and relaxation and how this simple act of closing our eyes, or day dreaming can be acts of resistance against a white supremacist system that expects us to grind for capitalism. Excellent narration. I'll have to reread this book on a regular basis once a year so I can really comprehend the messages within this book.

One of my best reads of the year in the very last days of it! This book is exceptionally good. Will be using with my sociology students for sure (relevant to so many topics - rest, yes, but also socialization, capitalism, systemic injustice, white supremacy, social movements…the list goes on). My only regret is that I listened to this without having my own copy to highlight - should‘ve known better! Endless perfectly-stated and profound passages.

Halfway through reading this it occurred to me to check if the audio was read by the author, and so I went and got the audio, so I could listen with my eyes closed. It's a wonderful look at the ways that white supremacy and capitalism combine and create a culture that makes us thing resting is a reward, instead of a necessary part of living.
