some poems were written in that long form style that annoys me but others were very good. all sad though, if the title didn‘t clue you in on the type of content.

I picked up this book of poetry after hearing Sabrina Benaim in an online poetry event. She said her German publisher translated the title as: Life & Other Magic Tricks… because there‘s no German word for depression. (?!) Since then, I‘ve also viewed some of her spoken word performances online. Anyway, I enjoy her wordplay & recommend this collection. #Canadian #poetry
i will remember the present as the place to start
today is a good day / to wake up / & be great
& have gratitude / for the relentless
pump of this heart / the way it does not know how
to hold back
i exhale / & i begin
Didn't love this one - but I also didn't hate it. A handful of standout poems kept it out of the "pan" category for me. Overall I found the works hard to focus on - I guess this poets experience with depression is different from mine.
Late to the game today but I‘ve got my book (again, not from my #TBR 🤫), snacks and ice tea so I‘m ready to do a little reading. 7h3m is what I left off with but I probably won‘t read for more than a half hour or so tonight #MrBook1inaMillion #LitsyPartyofOne #24B4Monday
Depression & Other Magic Tricks is the debut book by Sabrina Benaim, one of the most-viewed performance poets of all time, whose poem "Explaining My Depression to My Mother" has become a cultural phenomenon.
Depression & Other Magic Tricks explores themes of mental health, love, and family. It is a documentation of struggle and triumph, a celebration of daily life and of living.

#FallIsBooked Day 21: Fats‘ review: “Depression & Other Magic #Tricks is a debut collection by Sabrina Benaim, a 26-year-old poet from Toronto, Canada. In addition to the excerpt of a poem I chose to share today, I‘ve also included the last of a six-part interview with Benaim conducted by Button Poetry.” The fragment of the poem is shared here. First of all, the picture is NOT mine (I would never allow my fingernails to look like that one). Anyway, this book was so good I had to stand up and read it like Sabrina does on her live shows. It was filled with magic tricks.
✨I know I don‘t have to explain myself to you wonderful people, but I kind of need to acknowledge some things&this is the only safe place I have.
✨Things kind of got crazy. I lost my best friend/cousin a few months ago and my mind. I have no idea who I am without her. I don‘t have enough text to explain everything, but I was/am a hot mess.
✨I‘m slowly trying to pull myself back together. I‘ll start posting more. I really did miss Litsy. 💜💜
⭐️2.5/5
After watching Benaim‘s spoken poem “Explaining my Depression to my Mother” I was thrilled to find this collection at my local bookstore. However, the poems didn‘t meet up to expectations. I found myself trying to decipher what the poems were supposed to mean more than I did enjoy them. Highly curious how I would feel about them if she preformed them, since my biggest complaint is I couldn‘t feel her passion as I did with EMDTMM.
My mom loved this book and finished it between my 2 doctor‘s appointments on Wednesday. She said the poems really spoke to her and helped her realize she needs someone to talk to 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽!!! As for me personally, there is too much heartache and talk of unrequited love in these poems, which I am still not ready to deal with only 3 months after the horrible breakup. I am putting it to the side. Today‘s plans have changed-it‘s too rainy 👇🏽
I received this today. I can‘t wait to read it. I love Sabrina Benaim.
I am loving these short little reads from my library so far.
Benaim captured Internet attention for her poem and performance of "Explaining Depression to My Mother," which is included here. While that poem is definitely the strongest in the collection, her other poems addressing mental illness and struggle are strong and raw, well-observed and honest. Other poetry is not quite as strong, but as a first collection by a poet whose work is more intended to be performed than simply read, it is promising. .

Introduction to this collection of poetry 💜
This one really didn't work for me. I managed to finish it but I can't recommend it.
So some of you know I‘ve struggled with depression, and I‘m finally on antidepressants but unlearning all those bad thought patterns has been hard! I discovered this cute text message service that sends me a motivational, happy text every morning and I‘ve found it helps my depression more than I imagined. It‘s free! And I wanted to share with Littens. www.shinetext.com/?r=9yX8LD3 Hope y‘all benefit like I have!
I kept on feeling like she was speaking about something very heart felt to her, but that I had to be there to truly appreciate it. I felt left out reading most of the poetry. There was 1 poem however that REALLY touched me and felt like she was talking directly to me. All-in-all it was a good read. The author is very descriptive in an imaginative way. It reminds me a lot of a Tori Amos song. Enjoy!
Been having this problem lately. 🤯 Anyone else? Anybody have any cures for this affliction? 🤔
A pretty solid collection of poetry that mainly centers on depression and the heartbreak of unrequited love.
Did I buy this because of the cover? ...maybe.
The good poems are exceptionally good, a couple left me with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.
Others just passed me by. Certainly enough in the ones I liked to keep my eye out for future works.
Today‘s #bookhaul from my lunch and shopping trip 😁
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I would recommend this one to ppl that don‘t want to give up on new poetry but who have not been that impressed with recent works such as Milk and Honey, The Princess Saves Herself in This One, etc.
I definitely identified with many of these, however with most poetry collections there were several that simply didn‘t resonate.

This is such a lovely collection of poems about depression, I loved it and now I crave the paperback copy...
Caveat: dont even try this book if you dont like poetry.. that being said, anyone who enjoys poetry or books on depression or mental illness I think would like this book. Three stars.
Saw someone reading this on here that posted one of the poems, really liked it and bought the book.
I'm going to go ahead and call it: these are my #bestofoctober #octoberfavorites!
I read a total of 13 books this month, including my current read which I plan to finish tonight. Don't be too impressed though: two of those were poetry and six were graphic novels! It felt like a slow reading month because things are so busy at work. #teachersoflitsy
I've been a fan of Sabrina's since watching her slam poem, "Explaining My Depression to My Mother", a few years ago. That poem spoke to my own experience with mental illness so deeply, that I knew I had to read this book as soon as I could. Every poem was a painful, powerful punch to the heart.

4.5/5 stars. I read this in less than a day and was pleasantly surprised. She dapples in a lot of different forms of poetry, and I enjoyed most of them. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it. I found her through the one and only Neil Hilborn, so you know she's good.

Benaim was one of the first spoken word poets I listened to and I knew I had to read her poetry book. It's real, raw, relatable, and at times humorous. Perfect for a lazy Saturday spent reading.
