Fingers crossed that poetry can pull me out of this funk
Fingers crossed that poetry can pull me out of this funk
Not quite as good as fangirl, but I still cried, so there's that...
What a wild ride! Totally worth the second wave (the 20th anniversary edition came out a few weeks ago) buzz!
This book has everything. Dogs. Mad scientists. Revolutions. General unease...
Seriously worth a trip back to the 90s...or the 90s picture of 2011, really.
Can you say perfection?!
If We Were Villans is basically The Secret History meets Shakespear. It's perfect. It's not very long.
I seriously so not have the words to praise this book!
I have popcorn, a rum and coke, and Harry Potter on audio. Let's do this weekend right!
I think this is the first time I have hated every single story in a collection.
I'm starting to love graphic memoirs. Radtke's journey was so moving through her pictures, and brought that millennial unease that I'm so familiar with right to the page.
Plus there are ghost towns and fire and adventure.
What more could you want?
I'm so in love with Lazlo and Weep! Give me book two now!
Do you love short stories that actually fit their job description? This collection was short and sweet. No hidden novellas. Lots of millennial dating unease. A few laughs. Overall a good read, and perfect for a readathon

I dogear poetry collections. It makes it easier to find the words that struck me. Sometimes my books know they're loved before I know I love them.

On to book two.
Poetry for a heavy heart.

I'm giving graphic novels a go this time round. I'm glad I started with this one because I'm already a little spooked!

WHO WANTS CUTE HAMILTON YOUNG ADULT HISTORICAL FICTION? IS IT YOU?
Okay but for real this was super cute and Eliza is perfect in every version of this love story I have ever come across.
Is everyone else as in love with Strange the Dreamer as I am?!
You know how sometimes a mediocre book is worse than a bad book? That's what happened here. Eleanor is not likeable, and her story is at best slightly unique. There's a twist at the end that really isn't enough payoff for this short novel.
Hello. I was up until 5am reading this gem. Give me a minute, I'm still swooning.
I've read a lot of this year and to me this collection is a mixed bag. There were poems that took my breath away and poems I skimmed. Luckily for me those catch my breath poems were enough to make up for some of the flops.
If you've ever had a long distance relationship, this is worth picking up.
I've been in quite the reading funk. Everything I usually read is full of beautiful paragraphs, deep musings, and usually a little despair. My roomie came to the rescue with a few books I wouldn't have pickedm
So last night I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning finishing this fun, wonky gem. It was the perfect escape from all of my real world problems.
I really need to remember that reading is supposed to be fun, not a struggle.
My weekend was full of poetry, unfortunately for Drake all Beautiful Chaos gave me was a few yawns and the desire to pull down several more memorable collections.
I only pick up graphic novels when I hear weird/interesting/different buzz about them. This gem can be described as the perfect combination of all three. My only regret is not knowing the sequel is set to be published later this year.
Sometimes it is just nice to see yourself reflected back on the pages in front of you. That's what these poems feel like. Heartbreak can be an isolating experience, but Leav finds a way to capture the hurt, the questions, and the nostalgia and wrap them all up in a lyrical bow.
Taking a break from sad orphans for possibly more sadness...
I've been perpetually heartbroken since November. I already know that this book and me will be a perfect fit.
It took a few tries but I can now fully say I am obsessed with this book! Can I cancel all my superbowl plans just to read? No? Damn.
I don't read a ton of sci fi but this collection is so thought provoking and well written that I can't get it out of my mind!
FYI the work Arrival was based on is the title story. It's a rare case of the movie being better than the book, even though the story is easily the highlight of the collection.
I want to thank Netflix for reminding me how much I loved this little treasure .
I can't think of a more perfect time for this book. It gave me a greater appreciation of the women that are always in the background of American history and was a quick and enlightening read.
Gotta say I have some new favorite white house figures, and a lot of new trivia facts!
Currently reading about some incredibly strong women 😍
Second letdown from University of Iowa press in a row. Nothing original. More stories worth skipping than reading.
Not worth wasting any of 2017 on.
I'm really struggling to see what all the praise was about. Last year was full of brilliant short story collections but this was not one of them.
Last year I was a reactor. I dropped the ball on some things (like reading) and excelled at others. I had my heart broken and minor organs removed. I lost myself some where along the way.
This year I am living for me, with books and stories and laughter.
I'm starting today.
I haven't been able to settle on a book lately. here's hoping Murakami will get me out of my funk.
There are many more eloquent than me on days like today when it feels like nothing will ever be right again.
I was awoken at 3am by either my phone or a newly discovered gallstone to the news of our new president and then spent some 7 hours at the hospital.
I have never needed the comfort of JK and Hogwarts more.
My #readathon prize came yesterday! I'm all heart eyes and TBR piles. 😍📚😍📚😍
"And the gods did not kill for hubris-for hubris, they let you live long enough to learn."
Giving audio books another try while I tackle some stacks maintenence issues.
This is what happens when a new librarian carves pumpkins.
"Sometimes writing is running downhill, your fingers jerking behind you on the keyboard the way your legs do when they can't quite keep up with gravity. "
When I can't sleep I tend to gravitate towards things of comfort. lately that has meant Harry Potter audio books. Over the last week I've made my way through Sorcerers Stone and a few chapters into Chamber of Secrets while willing myself to catch some extra sleep. I guess if I am going to be tired I might as well be tired and at Hogwarts !
Perfect flow.
Evoking emotions.
Hitting home.
I love this new wave of Tumblr ready, Kaur similar verse. I'm not a poetry expert by any means but can still appreciate the beauty and gut twisting words that appear in this collection.
Lauren Groff is a powerhouse. I still think about last Fates and Furies about once a week, despite finishing it a year ago. This collection of short stories is a perfect taste of the proses I loved mixed with stories of life and regret which seem to be the most constant themes among the nine works here. favorites included L. Debard & Aliette and Blythe
I got through about a third of my intended reads from yesterday's #readathon. I'm so happy to find my way back to reading, reviewing, and loving books. 😄❤📚
Do you guys remember Foer? The guy who was writing those heartbreaking (or heartwarming? ) stories about Jewish identity and melancholy and world tragedy? I named my dog after one of his characters...Anyway he's back!
And he wants you to remember that the American dream is miserable.
And that the world is still tragic.
Also, he is still Jewish and prolific and wonderful.
Oh, but now he is also long winded...
