The Bed Moved
The Bed Moved: Stories | Rebecca Schiff
The audacious, savagely funny debut of a writer of razor-sharp wit and surprising tenderness: a collection of stories that gives us a fresh take on adolescence, death, sex; on being Jewish-ish; and on finding ones way as a young woman in the world. A New Yorker, trying not to be jaded, accompanies a cash-strapped pot grower to a clothing optional resort in California. A nerdy high-schooler has her first sexual experience at Geology Camp. A college student, on the night of her fathers funeral, watches a video of her bat mitzvah, hypnotized by the image of the girl she used to be . . . Frank and irreverent, Rebecca Schiffs stories offer a singular view of growing up (or not) and finding love (or not) in todays ever-uncertain landscape. In its bone-dry humor, its pithy observations, and its thrilling ability to unmask the most revealing moments of human interactionno matter how fleetingThe Bed Moved announces a new talent to be reckoned with. From the Hardcover edition.

#COVIDrereads

Wow! Apparently I read three of the same books together a year ago. How predictable am I? And there wasn‘t even a pandemic then!

I did like this collection more this time. Maybe I just appreciate the transparency of women talking about their lady parts as metaphors right now. Idk. Not great. Not terrible. Barbara the Slut is definitely the best of the three! 2.5⭐️

Wow. I had hoped this would get better with time, but instead I actively dislike it now. The stories are mediocre at best, but some are truly pointless. 1.5⭐️ #MonthofRereads

⭐️⭐️⭐️This one is a brilliant debut by Rebecca Schiff. The Bed Moved is a collection of short stories which lays truth that we dare-not-accept, in front of us, bare and uncovered. It was definitely not a page turner, but I would call it a good read filled with fun and sharp ends. Complete review in https://ovicandid.wordpress.com/2017/10/06/the-bed-moved-book-review/

Ultimately I think the writing style wasn't for me--very short and vague, though I suppose that fits with the young woman protagonists. The sex stories aren't exploitative but also not too interesting, with the exception of "World Trade Date" with the 9/11 hook. Schiff makes you think about the modern world, like how the Internet changes charity interactions in "The Lucky Lady." Also the academic demands of growing up in my fave, "Sports Night."

Do you love short stories that actually fit their job description? This collection was short and sweet. No hidden novellas. Lots of millennial dating unease. A few laughs. Overall a good read, and perfect for a readathon

These stories are weird and cutting and wonderfully funny and sad. I adored this collection.

Like most short story collections there were a few stories that fell a little flat, but overall it was a pleasurable, balanced reading experience. Very honest, timely, cut to the chase stories of various lengths. One of my favorites, "Keep an Eye On It" was one short, powerful paragraph.

Some stories were excellent, filled with pathos and humor. However, there was a current of hostility towards bisexuals throughout several stories. I also thought that there was some immaturity in her writing style. I think Schiff has a lot of promise and I would try future work with an open mind.

Is it odd that I feel guilty for criticizing books because writing is difficult? I'm troubled by the first story in this collection. I want stories about women with complicated sex lives. Yet I feel that The Bed Moved was just filled with tropes and offered no real insight.

How fun this #24in48 #readathon was! 2 books started and completed, and a 3rd (already started - this awesome, funny, wacky book of short stories) was finished, and a 4th started. Four hours of my audio book listened to. Overall a very successful weekend. Thank you @Litsy ! and thank you @AlgonquinYR for my prize!

This @24in48 Readathon is going spotty, at best. I am trying to cram it in while on vacation where we have had to be in cars most of the time this weekend. I got some reading in when I could. This was a good read. A few of the stories were REALLY good. A few were interesting and a couple just ok. But on the whole- I think this was a good collection. @Litsy

I feel like all the short story collections I've been reading lately are knocking it out of the park.
This one was great--blunt without being direct, and very relatable.

Solid collection of short stories about young womanhood. Schiff's writing is raw. She writes with precision & clarity, & the stories are well-paced. Her narrators are blunt, observant, & often snide as they explore dating culture, sex, & relationships. Yet Schiff also broaches deeper topics like body image, feminism, cancer, human character, & modern culture, esp. consumerism. It's in the same vein as Barbara the Slut, but snappier. 👯 #ReadWomen

Sfox414 I'm glad you liked it--my library request for this one came in yesterday and I'm excited to read it! 8y

#SelfCareSunday with books and tacos! Really enjoying Rebecca Schiff's smart satire. The stories are all very short, which makes for a great, fun weekend read. Her words bite, just like the hot sauce I put all over my tacos. 😳🌮 #ReadWomen

Megabooks I enjoyed this one too. No review on the blog, though. I still can't figure out how to talk about sex in a way that doesn't offend my parents' 85 yo neighbor! 😳 8y

BookishFeminist @HardcoverHearts This is perfect for the Readathon! The stories would be excellent for short breaks when you want to put down a novel for a bit. 8y
BookishFeminist @sherrynuts I can vouch that this is an awesome idea. 👍🏼🌮 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks LOL. I hear ya. There's definitely a lot of it in here, but not too descriptive anyway from what I've read so far. Have you read Barbara the Slut? This book reminds me of that but better. 8y
Megabooks Yes, I've read Barbara the Slut. I feel like the best stories in Barbara were better than the best in The Bed Moved, but the worst stories in Barbara were worse than the ones in Bed. Neither book was earthshaking for me. Good, but not great. 8y

As I frequently find with short story collections, this one was hit and miss for me, but unfortunately mostly miss. The stories that did hit were great, and I laughed out loud, and some of the sentences were fantastic on their own.

Really enjoyed this! Reminded me of "Barbara the Slut" (which I loved soo much), so if that's your cup of tea, then you'll definitely like this. Schiff's writing style is almost poetic at times and each story is a tad uncomfortable, yet thoroughly entertaining.

She's a good writer and funny but all, well, almost all of the stories are about sex. I'm not prude so the subject matter was fine but the repetitive nature of the topic became boring to read. Not my favorite short story collection.

3🌟I wanted to love this book, and I did love the first half. But from Another Cake onwards, the book fell flat for me. It got repetitive and uninteresting. The wit wasn't there anymore. The picture marks the point where the book went from amazing to blah.
